It's not all about money and markets. Look at NYK, they've sucked for decades despite having monstrous payrolls.

ur in favor of a superteam, while ur team gets the short end of the stick in a lopsided trade....?

with or without those players going to ur team, NOH is still lottery bound, its just a matter of whether you think payin 40m for trash to tank a season...when u can save that 40m and spend it on FAs

Gotta love Lakerfan's dedication to trying to convince a Spurs message board how superior their team is.

son the Hornets have been in the playoffs 3 of the last 4 years so what the hell are you talking about? Chris Paul has missed an average of 20 games each of the last two seasons due to his knee. how did the Hornets get the short end of the stick on this? lopsided trade? are you fucking stupid?

if anything the Lakers and Rockets gave up a bit too much. The Hornets got 4 quality players in Odom, Martin, Scola, and Dragic as well as 2 draft picks. put the damn bong down son.

sup scrah?

This forum was good for a long time but now is completely overrun with trolls. There simply isn't much quality basketball related discussion anymore and the lack of any moderation has killed what used to be a fun place to talk hoops.

Take care guys.

well then according to your logic if Paul is so great then why haven't the Hornets won a championship yet or even came close? they have had numerous good players built around him over the last few years.

Lamar Odom, Martin, Scola, Dragic, and 2 draft picks for CP3 and his bum knee was a great trade. how can you argue otherwise?

Scola is a nice 2nd post man
Odom didn't show up in a third of all Laker games..in NO....wow
Martin doesn't play defense
Dragic isn't a starter in this league

By next year it would be Scola, Martin and some shit contracts left

Paul/NBA/Stern just killed Paul's value. I don't think they will be many teams offering Hornets better value than 3 starters + 1 backup + 2 picks knowing that he won't resign (and will escape to the Lakers during FA)

If LA is unable to trade for Paul now, I don't think they are in any position to sign a top quality free agent next year (for more than the MLE). You have to remember there is still a salary cap. S and T's are LA's vehicle to acquire potential 2012 free agents.

If I recall, the key Laker trade pieces are all on contracts beyond 2012. I'm pretty sure Kobe, Gasol and Bynum have multiple years left. In addition, LAL are waaaay over the cap. One expiring deal is not getting them under the salary cap unless it's Bryant's deal. I'm less sure about LO's contract.

To get any high quality player, LA must shed contracts. With Chrissy Paul not being available to them now, an older declining Laker team becomes less attractive for the time being. I guess Dwight Howard is still blinded by the LA lights, so we'll see. We do know he can't get it done as the Alpha on a team.

It's also very possible that Kobe's days of carrying a team to the finish line may be over as well.

The unfortunate thing for the Lakers is that the trade information leak demonstrates to the Gasol and LO is that management does not believe in them anymore. Can Mike Brown get that locker room in order? I would wonder about that. Times may be a changin out on the left coast.

The Lakers have a 1st class front office. They understand the demographics in their market very well. Their fan base is largely comprised of legriding bandwaggoners, and the Lakers know these types are the ones who buy merchandise.

The large market doesn't hurt.

However, to be quite honest, a team from a small market like, oh.. San Antonio, that can muster 4 rings during the Lakers' prime years truly has a great front office, because they don't go out and suck their way to the best players other teams have to offer.

Jerry Buss is a crafty businessman.

Pretty much the beneficiary of being in LA first and willing to spend some money. They continuously take advantage of small market teams to make themselves better.

Shaq.

Kobe.

Pau.

Paul.

Well, maybe not Paul.

Basically the Hornets roster would have looked like this:

C Okafor (very good defensive center, solid offensively, pretty good overall)
PF Odom, Scola (Versatile PF who can defend and score. Scola is a good scorer)
SF Ariza, Pondexter (Excellent defender, but shitty offensively. Backup is a project)
SG Martin (Excellent scorer, poor defender, but Ariza would bail him out defensively)
PG Jack, Dragic (Solid at best. Would need an upgrade)

Basically, 3 of the starter would be excellent defenders. Martin can score. Odom's versatile. Plus, the Hornets wouldn't be done. They may have traded Odom elsewhere.

^ Scola would start. Dragic might also.

I would hope not. His defense blows. Scola would be better used off the bench for his scoring.

Dragic may start, but Monty would trust Jack more. Also, wonder if the Hornets would place a bid for Billups.

Why would an ownerless team sign a long term lease?

That makes no sense whatsoever. It could be a disaster of epic proportion.

Because, it means long-term security for the team. The previous lease wasn't great for the Hornets. So the new owner was waiting for the new CBA, 10,000 season tickets, and a brand new lease which is more favorable. Once the new lease is signed, then the ownership will be announced. If there is no long-term lease, then no owner. That's common knowledge in New Orleans.

What if no one buys the team?

They have an owner in place. They had multiple goals when the team was sold to the league.

1) Get rid of the massive debt from the previous owner. Done

2) Establish more corporate sponsorships. Done

3) Have a new CBA. Done

4) Sell 10,000 season tickets. Done. Artificial or not. Someone bought them.

5) Sign a long-term lease.

6) New owner announced.

Yes, it's called the NBA.

http://neworleanscitybusiness.com/blog/2011/12/08/hornets-hit-10000-season-ticket-mark/

As of yesterday, there's no prospective ownership group, just a goal of finding one early in the new year.

As Chump said, I'd be interested in seeing what the Chris Paul trade does to the value of the team.

Trade doesn't make business sense if you are the owner of the Hornets. None of the people mentioned outside of Paul can sell a single ticket.

It's not about being a mid level team. The Hornets are already that.

It's about causing fans to want to watch the Hornets, to get excited about the prospects the Hornets have of competing on the big stage. It's not about fielding a decent team.

Fans that know they aren't going to win it all still have the comfort of "we have the best PG in the league".

Who's going to wear the Odom jersey, or the Scola jersey in New Orleans?

No one.
