View Full Version : What was Houstons motivation in the scam?

With all this talk of L.A. / New Sternleans attempting to pull their scam, what was Houston enticed with?

Rockets would have given up:
Kevin Martin 23 ppg
Lewie Scola very solid if not spectacular
Dragic (very impressive vs Spurs in playoffs and superb per minute numbers)
1st round pic via the perennial sucky Knicks so prolly gonna be a high pick.

All for declining Gasol? :nope
Did pervy Wrinkley Buss offer the Houston owner some serious cash?

Houston probably pawns Gasol off for picks/youngins later in the year. They had a steady 9-seed type team the past couple of seasons...better to tear down the squad and build ground-up in the meantime

Its simple. They acquire a very good player and clear salary to go after Nene.

Lowry and Buddinger are more valuable than Scola and Martin because they're younger and have better contracts. Gasol gives them a marquee player and more cap room.

We get Gasol and can afford Nene. We get serious height and one of the best front courts in the league (if Nene signed).

Actually come to think of it, we have no idea what Morey was planning to do after this. He might have had a string of potential deals that were set to go down after this. Apparently Rockets officials are outraged and claim this move sets the franchise back 3 years.

I was thinking the exact same thing last night. Giving up 3 pretty good players for 1 good aging player? Hmm....

Probably just tearing down the roster and rebuilding, Rockets aren't winning shit with their current roster.

Giving up a couple first round picks seems to debunk that notion. Morey had to have a plan for after this deal. He's threatening to resign today. I'm guessing that if the deal didn't go down last night (or sometime very soon), the window for any other deals would close. There's no way just missing out on Gasol "sets the franchise back 3 years."

Well shit, might be looking at some under the table cash being passed around.

Lowry is our best player. Especially with his contract and age, he is worth more than 2x Martin to us.

Budinger is not that valuable; he can be had for a 14-20ish pick.

Kevin Martin blows and the Rockets already have a great young PG prospect in Lowry, so it boils down to ugrading from Scola to Gasol while slashing $6 million in salary. And yeah, it would give them a slot to get Nene even if they had to really overpay. It would be a huge upgrade for Houston and would put them easily in the top 4 seeds of the West.

Houston was dumping its worst contracts on a team without an owner while getting a franchise-level player.

Kevin Martin blows on defense but he is an efficient 20+ ppg scorer that can't deliver in the clutch. He is what he is, but overall a valuable asset to a team that has a star.

Nah Martin is crap. He's a volume scorer who does nothing else and shoots a bad percentage while being paid like a star.

Kevin Martin is can get you 30 points on 11 shots. It's not like he's Monta Ellis. He would be great in a situation like Chicago.

When? His shooting percentage the last few years has been awful. The Rockets would be lucky to dump his overpaid ass; especially to get a frontline of Gasol+Nene.

if the rockets successfully assembled a gasol/nene frontline, that would propel them back into the playoffs.

His FG% is a lie. His point per shot is off the charts.

Sadly, Martin probably gives up more points than he can score. That is why I don't feel bad if we dump him to Nawlins.

Martin excels at getting to the free throw line. He is also a good three-point shooter.

He does suck at everything that isn't scoring, though.

They were going to use the money to go after Nene. Nene, Gasol and Lowry is a nice foundation.

Kmart is good but not the end all. Up and coming point guards and shooting guards are a dime a dozen in the NBA. Now good Big's that's a different story.

Blunder? They made a ton of cash off that shitty import.

Houston is a fickle creature. They seem to always field a good team but never a great one. Even the team around Hakeem wasn't that great.

No doubt. The Spurs should pick Yao up for the league minimum and just bench his ass. Think of the income from China.
