There are two different things going on.

1. Stern/owners (Stern represents owners, not players) want a competitive business environment, not just a 4 team league with placebo opponents.

2. Hornets have to either have shit for salaries and short contracts or they have to have young talent and be ready to go. Either makes them marketable.

Old talent doesn't make the Hornets marketable anywhere, especially when that talent is new acquisitions.

The Celtics deal has a few hiccups, and let's face it, the Chris Paul and Dwight Howard sagas will probably hold the rest of the league hostage indefinitely. West sounds like he wants to play for the Celtics, but if the Hornets can't handle to aforementioned hiccups or he opts for more money he'll land in Indiana. For now.

Marc Stein of ESPN reports that the Pacers are "making progress" with free agent David West on a two-year, $20 million contract.

Celtics beat writer A. Sherrod Blakely tweeted that a deal bringing West to the team was looking "slim," and Stein almost immediately followed it up with a report that the Pacers were closing in on a potential deal with West. If he does land in Indiana, West would be penciled in as the starting power forward and hold solid fantasy value as long as he can remain healthy following reconstructive knee surgery.
