View Full Version : Is Jon Jones Number 1 Pound For Pound in MMA?

I am going to say yes after that performance. I know everyone wants to say Anderson but lets look at this..

Jones is the champ in the toughest division in MMA at 205. He took the belt violently from Shogun a former Pride legend, then thrashed Page another Pride legend who was motivated and in awesome shape. Machida a former champ with a killer resume. That is 3 finishes in a row againt the best of the best and is the top of the heap in the very best division in all of MMA..

Who, at any weight class, could stop Jones? I'm serious, who? I don't think anyone, with the exception of Frank Mir (because he's a fucking God), could beat Jones right now.

I hate him, but damn...

dos santos could comp him but that might be it

p4p, unfortunately yes

but I'd still take the top of the HW over him if they fought: JDS, Cain, and yes even Lesnar and Carwin (don't know enough about Overeem tbh)

Now when GSP is out of fighting for more then a year, there is nobody else that you can say is better then Jones.

And btw. the toughest division is 155 !

no. espn has GSP, Edgar, and silva all ahead of jones. silva has been undefeated and the champ for 5 years and is 14-0 in the UFC. Jones' time will come, but until silva loses he will remain p4p and the GOAT

I think you have to look at Strength of competition. He has beatdown Shogun, Rampage and Machida. His next fight is likely Rashad. Nobody in MMA is fighting that level of foes, fight after fight. Not Silva, not anybody. If Jones beats Shad and finishes him, i can't see how anyone can say he is not number 1 pound for pound. Silva in that time-frame may fight Sonnen again and even if he wins, Sonnen is not Shad or Rampage or Machida..

I see what you are saying but i just believe the right to claim p4p is for silva to lose. you cant really penalize him for beating everyone the UFC has put in front of him. Jones is on the greatest one year tear in the sports history, but silva is 14-0 in the world's premier organization and has held his belt for 5 years. I just think until he loses that he has earned the right to that claim.

ESPN article on a silva-jones fight...

This is why a superfight between Jones and Silva should at least be discussed. You have the definitive No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter in the world in Silva, who has never lost in the UFC, against a 24-year-old phenom who lay waste to the 205-pound division in 2011.

If Jones beats Shad and Silva makes his next defense the UFC should push to make that fight happen. Silva is 37 and if this does not happen in the next year or so, it may be too late.. That's the superfight of superfights..

dbreiden83080
12-14-2011, 07:39 PM
And i know that Henderson wants Jones but he brings nothing more to the table than Rampage did.. After Shad the UFC should have only one thing on their mind

Jones VS Anderson..

Whats strange is how people dont mention JDS in any pound for pound conversation... or any heavyweight for that matter. Not just here.. but writers aswell.

Has JDS ever not looked dominant? or lost a round? At least Machida and Bonnar won rounds against Jones.. i dont think anyone has done that so against JDS. I would say he is probably in the top 3 with Bones and Anderson after beating Cain the way he did.

He did not defend his title yet. That's the main reason IMO. If Cain KO'ed JDS he would be in top 3 conversation

I don't think Silva wants any part of Bones. He would get destroyed and he probably knows it. Hendo has at least a puncher's chance. That's the only way Jones would ever lose, somebody gets lucky and lands a big shot to his chin.

My thoughts exactly. But then I thought about it, and the same could be said for me and Frank Mir -- except, I hope that there's no question about if I'd go down on him, because I'd blow that meat flute like Kenny G on his sax.

In the 2nd part of the vid at this link:

http://www.mmafighting.com/2012/01/30/the-mma-hour-with-jon-jones-cesar-gracie-mike-pierce-dustin-p/

Bones mentions that he wanted 3 fights this year: 2 at LHW then 1 at HW against a Top 10 guy, but UFC (Dana) said that the time isn't right. Starts about the 9:55 mark of the 2nd vid. Interesting that he is already thinking about fighting at HW.

I do not think Jon Jones is the P4P best yet. He had in my opinion the greatest year in MMA history last year, but I still have GSP as the top P4P fighter by a slim margin. Right now I think GSP is more well rounded, though Jones is quickly catching up in all areas and is far more brutal than the welterweight champion. Anderson has had the most dominant run in UFC history, but as the Chael fight shows he has a glaring weakness in his game.

I'm thinking it MIGHT last 2 minutes before Jones has him on the ground and is feeding him elbows for a TKO.

Doubt it...as soon as he got close enough, Cigano would decapitate him with an overhand right. Similar to what he did to Cain Velasquez tbh...

Prisoners of the MOMENT

http://a3.twimg.com/profile_images/1526130408/skip-bayless-gun-show.jpg

Kid has defended his title 4 times.
So if he dies in a car wreck tomorrow is he the "James dean" of MMA?

Silva has been kicking ass for so long and is undefeated in the UFC.

That counts for more than 4 title defenses no matter what.

Who has Silva beat compared to Jones?

MW is a weak division and has been for years....

dbreiden83080
04-22-2012, 12:55 AM
He is showing staying power against better fighters and he'd rape Silva in a fight. Sonnen will take that belt in June anyway..

dbreiden83080
04-22-2012, 01:04 AM
Not gonna change my mind the kid has to show staying power. Also the thought of him moving up to heavy weight was one of Joe Rogan's best "moments' why is this guy even on the show?

Came back to clarify my position.

If Silva were to loose his next fight and retire the debate on whether he was the best pound for pound never is still valid.

If Jones looses his next fight and ever get the title back and is out of MMA for ever, retires then comparing him to Silva would be a :lmao.

Jones is 24 he can lose come back and dominate for a long time.. Silva has losses Jones has never come close to losing... GSP lost at 25 and dominated the next 5 years..

Who is next to fight Jones in the lhw?

I see nobody. Hendo will get the chance now and I predict 2nd round finish for Jones.

Then maybe Gustafsson if he beats somebody that's top5.
And Phil Davis that lost to Shad.

It's not that stupid now to think Bones can move up the division.
JDS, Cain are top fighters and they are close as heavy as Jones

dbreiden83080

Cleary you missed the point of me saying " never get the title back and is out of MMA for ever, retires then comparing him to Silva would be a :lmao"

I'm done with this debate dude. Not gonna change my mind. Jones has gotta put in the time and the fights for me to consider him better than Silva.

Cheers.

I didn't miss anything because your point is moronic. Jones is not retiring if he loses what kind of stupid ass logic is that? That is a what if that would never happen..

dbreiden83080
04-22-2012, 01:32 AM
If careers ended today. Do you get it now? of course you don't

Non issue.

You think that by me not agreeing with you I am saying that Jones sux.

Non issue.

You think by you not being able to change my mind I am "a dumbass"

Non issue.

Later

Careers don't end today that is why your argument does not work.. Silva lost fights older than Jones is right now..

Hughes would be the GOAT WW had GSP quit after Serra... And Jones has done enough right now to earn this title... Silva fights in the inferior weight class and trust me wants no part of Jones.. He will never take that fight..

dbreiden83080
04-22-2012, 01:39 AM
So you're conjecture over whether Silva has "wants any part" of Jones is superior to my conjecture "if careers ended today"

Non issue

Careers ending today for a near 40 year old Silva versus a 24 year old Jones...

Jones has already done more in MMA when you look at strength of opponent.....
