Since billups is so going to scarred off NBA teams from claiming him, How about the spurs claiming him for $1.00 or for the minimum required bid.. Same goes for Gilbert Arenas :) Guys, what do you think? Can anyone find out if this is even possible?

Veteran minimum applies as well, doesn't it?

Can't do that. Have to offer at least the applicable veterans minimum.

Arenas would be interesting, but some team out there is going to bid more than the minimum.

Spurs can't claim amnestied players. Teams need to be under the cap to do so and Spurs aren't.

Also, even if we could bid, a bid of $1 is illogical. Bid should be made to maximise:

(Expected Value of Play - Cost of Contract)*Probability of winning the Auction.

A $1 bid maximises the first half of that equation, but we'd have no hope of getting him. So the proposition is illogical from a classical auction POV, doesn't meet the Minimum contract requirements, and isn't legal under the Bidding process, given our cap situation.

I was under the impression that they are under after they waive RJ

Nope; still $5.8 million over the cap even if they amnesty Dick.

I think the Spurs are under the luxury tax level if they use the amnesty on RJ, but still not under the salary cap.
