Quoting Wikipedia like a BOSS:

Full recovery from appendectomies takes about 4 to 6 weeks but it can prolong to up to 8 weeks if the appendix had ruptured.

Great timing. As if this mini-offseason wasn't going bad enough, now one of our main cogs could be out for a quarter of the season.

A quick Google search tells me that Grant Hill and Al Jefferson missed about two weeks after an appendectomy. Andrea Bargnani missed about a month, then again that is Bustnani we're talking about.

Spurs season starts in two weeks and with Paranoid Pop, I'm assuming Neal won't be ready for the first game.

Gary Neal's appendix didn't burst. But it was inflamed and causing pain and discomfort. Docs appear to have caught it just in time.

Neal is expected to miss a week of training camp, maybe more. Will be re-examined next week.

According to my Wikipedia degree, it should.

Return to basketball activities will be expedited by healthy reserves of corporate knowledge.

If it had burst, he'd probably still be an inpatient at the hospital after getting emergency abdominal surgery. He'd have a much larger scar from surgery, which comes with greater risks for adhesions and other complications from peritonitis.

Good news: be happy they caught it before it ruptured, but still, kind of a bummer way to start the season. Not exactly a positive omen for the season.

With Pop, Gary may be out for months, due to missing the corporate knowledge of training camp.

The thought of rushing back from that operation to play basketball just gives me the creeps. Can't you imagine stretching up and back to grab a rebound and having it rip open? I can. I guess I'd be like Bargnani.

It's bad timing for Neal, and for the team, but let it heal all the way up.

this.

I was already expecting to see more of Anderson thanks to the condensed schedule. Now with Neal out to start the season in all likelihood, its time to really see what Anderson can do for us after a year of absolutely nothing concrete being shown.

True.

This would be good for James Anderson to fight his way back into the rotation.

wtf? The one thing this team doesn't lack is depth, especially at the 2. We are a legit 10-deep team.

I know this is a Gary Neal thread but with all this talk about James Anderson stepping up and taking his minutes makes me for some weird reason think that James Anderson won't come through because he is injury prone.

Fireball

I hope Pop never planned to use Anderson behind Neal this season, despite of Neals accomplishments last season. Hopefully James stays healthy for the full season.

And Gary ... get well ... I heard your doctor looked at the appendix and said "that was clutch" ...

Not a big deal. Without the appendix rupturing and with it being done laparoscopically it shouldn't be too significant. Probably 48 hours in the hospital and then he could be up and walking around. 2 weeks is a very realistic scenario.

Just consulted a General Surgeon (really, I have one sitting five feet from me).

Pop says Neal out up to four regular season games.

Neal is going to miss the pre-season, meaning that he's actually out for all the reg season, as playing him wouldn't be fair to the other players on the roster.

Wonder if that will shorten the recovery time.

That will shorten the recovery time, definitely. Also, it was a laparoscopic procedure, so, only a small abdominal incision was made. That will further hasten his recovery.
