We bought my grandmother a Kindle is it possible to root it and put books that i download onto it? (not amazon ebooks)

i googled and couldnt find anything

most of the books on mine I downloaded from various sites other than amazon

What type of files are the ebooks you already have? Some transition very well, some don't. Worst case scenario, you could always try to transfer them to a word file and email them to the kindle...

and can you still put incompatible formats on your kindle, and then send them to amazon for a free conversion to kindle format? then amazon sends them back to your kindle.

Never done that, but thought they used to do that for people

I think that Kindle has its own operating system and no one has worked on it. That is one reason that the Nook is so popular, it "plays" just about any file right out of the box and it is android based (yes even the eink versions) so there is a community dedicated to rooting it.

thanks i figured it out. i found thousands of .mobi ebooks that the kindle reads without any issues and a program that converts other formats to kindle friendly formats.
