Losing Juniniho is a punch in the gut. Losing Omar would suck too, but I love Omar and want to see him succeed so if he can go to the EPL or another big European league. I don't want to see him go to Mexico though.

I LOLed at the Rogers report. The source for that is probably Robbie's mom.

Ronaldinho to MLS... but not to LA?

http://mls-news.fr/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=2013:transferts-la-mls-negocie-avec-ronaldinho-exclu&catid=36:breves&Itemid=130

Google Translate says:

As we had announced a few days ago (read here), Ronaldinho, the playmaker Flamengo (Brazil D1) is in the viewfinder of the MLS (Major League Soccer). Meary Jerome, who handle the case jointly with the MLS, told us: "Yes, we try to bring" Ronnie "with the League, but there may be a surprise for the club for which he could play . We are preparing a big offer, but it is currently not in Los Angeles, which still has the right of refusal over the put option on the player, which is a problem for now .. . "To be continued.

I agree on Eto'o, though he has to be moving somewhere (back to Inter?)... just can't see MLS ponying up $25mil on a single player though, especially one without big name appeal in the United States.

Becks and Lampard should go somewhere like San Jose just to prove how awesome they are :lol

Becks on San Jose = Wando scores 30 goals.

Also that Wando gets a nats call up and wastes his opportunities from 3 yards.

Voodoo Economics: A Look at how the LA Galaxy Manage the Salary Capby Abbott Smith
I woke up this morning to Josh Mayers of the Seattle Times reporting that the LA Galaxy had managed to secure Leonardo on a free transfer and they got Juninho back on a free loan.Suffice it to say that my initial response was not fit to print.

The top of the LA Galaxy roster boggles the mind. They have 3 DPs; Landon Donovan, David Beckham and Robbie Keane. Edson Buddle returns to the squad after a year in Europe. Leonardo and Juninho are now both back. They also still have the player they brought in when they thought that Juninho would not return, Marcelo Sarvas.

Which brings us to the issue of the salary cap. How did LA manage to secure this level of talent and stay within the MLS salary cap? The answer is Allocation Money.

It's easy to overlook all of the little things that LA has done this off-season that brought in Allocation Money. They earned Allocation Money by advancing to the Group Stage of the 2012 CONCACAF Champions league and the Knock Stage of the 2011 CONCACAF Champions league. (The Sounders also earned the same Allocation Money.) LA earned Allocation Money when they traded Donovan Ricketts to Montreal. Expansion clubs are given large amounts of Allocation Money and I imagine that Montreal dropped a chunk of theirs to obtain the services of a veteran Goal Keeper with Rickett's pedigree. The Galaxy also likely earned Allocation Money when they loaned Donovan, Omar Gonzales and Keane to teams in Europe. Yes, the loan of Gonzales came with a high price tag when he was injured, but his loan fee likely still applies.

To protect the interests of the league in the global market place, specific Allocation Money amounts are not disclosed. But we do know a few things. For every transfer or loan fee equaling 1 million dollars or more, a team can apply ~$650K of their share of the fee toward their roster as Allocation Money. In the world of an MLS team, a 1 million dollar transfer fee makes a player a DP. In the world of the English Premiere League, a 1 million dollar loan fee almost equates to petty cash. It doesn't take much of a leap to imagine that LA may be sitting on a couple million in Allocation Money for their 2012 roster. When the salary cap for an MLS team is $2.8 million, adding another $2 million to a team's individual cap through the process of Allocation Money changes the landscape. If these numbers are correct, the Galaxy could have more than $3.8 million that they can distribute among the remaining 15-17 players on their Senior roster where the average MLS team only gets $2.8 million before Allocation Money. This raises their average Senior roster salary to ~$250K per player. Compare this to the average MLS Senior roster salary of $120K and LA's roster begins to make more sense.

But how the Galaxy are affording their roster is only half of the picture. The other half of the picture relates to how the Galaxy manage their team relative to the salary cap rules. Edson Buddle returns to the team because when he went to Europe, he went on a free transfer. LA retained his rights. Juninho and Leonardo return because Sao Paulo doesn't have room on their squad. LA was able to negotiate a free transfer and a free loan helping Sao Paolo address a couple of problems with the Sao Paolo roster. One man's junk is another's treasure. The Galaxy have shrewdly analyzed the MLS role in the global market and leveraged it to find bargain quality. (Seattle can't complain too vehemently. Mauro Rosales was the MLS deal of the year in 2011.)

In the case of the 3 LA DPs, they cashed in on the glamour and allure of living in LA. Beckham could have made more money playing for PSG, but his family loves living in Southern California. Robbie Keane came to LA in no small part because Beckham and his family sold Keane's significant other on living in LA. Donovan wants to live in LA and so he stayed in America rather than jumping to England on a permanent basis. Los Angeles and New York have international cache that no other American city possess. This is not the Galaxy's fault and they would be stupid not to capitalize. Seattle is capitalizing on its own brand of geographic cache. As Mauro Rosales said, "In the Summer, it is Paradise." Michael Gspurning and Adam Johansson raved about the Sounders' facilities, landscape and fans. Christian Sivebaek talked in his recent interview about how much his girlfriend and he love being in America.Yet LA's DP signings also allow The Galaxy to acquire Allocation Money through offseason loans. This is a mechanism that the Sounders have not used and the one example of how an aging Euro-Star looking for a payday can actually make sense in the modern MLS game beyond helping with the gate.

Los Angeles also manages their roster by looking for bargains in their role players. In the recent Re-Entry draft, LA drafted four players, all veterans. These players play for close to the league minimum while providing leadership. This further shifts the structure of the LA payroll. If the average LA Senior player is making $250K, but 4 of them are making $50K, then that's another $800K that can be redistributed. Now 8 non-DP players can be making DP player salaries of $350K. Theoretically the Galaxy could field a Starting 11 where every player makes $350K or more. This is the true definition of how a team can manage its budget within MLS rules and still adhere to the axiom that good players cost more. When the entire starting roster is making more, then the large DP salaries don't have the same negative impact in the locker room that they have in a situation where everyone is only making $120K.

The Galaxy also leverage youth development in their long range roster management. The LA area is a hotbed of youth soccer. This gives LA an advantage in the Home Grown player market. Players like Jose Villareal allow the Galaxy to reload. The team is also shrewd in how it drafts and trades. Kyle Nakazawa was a nice pick up.

The Sounders are positioning themselves as a force in MLS roster management. Ultimately, Seattle is not LA and the Sounders will use the MLS roster rules in different ways. But some of the MLS roster construction advantages only come with time. LA offers a glimpse of how that time compounds interest.

If we can stay pretty healthy I really like RSL's shot at making it back to at least the conference finals. We're not playing as many games this year as last (5 less) so that could benefit towards the end of the season. The problem now is getting our best players healthy before March 10th. Sabo, Javy, Will Johnson, Beck, and Nat are all recovering from off season injuries. I think we'll see a slow start from RSL but we should be there at the end.

One thing that could really hurt LA this year that I haven't seen many people write about is the possibility of losing Keane and Becks to international play for significant stretches during the heart of the season.

I don't expect Ireland to make it out of their group in Euro... but you lolitaly in the group you never know. Becks is on the Olympic squad right? Maybe a new manager would give him a look for the Euro too.

Eddie Johnson: Gamble Towards Specific Style Of Play
by Dave Clark on Feb 18, 2012 1:00 PM PST in Sounders: Analysis

Eddie Johnson's career displays some significant red flags. He was last an effective goal scorer with his club in 2007, albeit in Kansas City. It was a dominant season. His 15 goals and 6 assists in 24 MLS matches (all starts) resulted in a 1.50 PP90. That season became his ticket to Europe. But in Europe he struggled to find a place where he fit. Fulham held his contract the whole time, but he didn't fit as a regular starter there and was loaned down to Cardiff City of the Championship (scoring twice in 30 matches) and then to Aris in Greece (5 goals in 16 appearances) and then to Preston North End on their way to being relegated out of the Championship (0 Goals in 16 matches). There was then a near signing with Major League Soccer, an exploration of a deal with Puebla which went sour through some combination of a lack of agent, front office politics and possibly fitness. His four-year-plus detour to Europe went far from well.

Yet, he stayed in the United States national team picture, but ultimately was not on the 23 man roster for South Africa 2010. Even his scoring in an American kit has an MLS flavor, with 7 of his 12 goals coming in MLS grounds and another 2 within national borders. His 2007 season, his national team experience and even his 2004 season (12 & 3) are the signs of how good EJ can be.

Sigi Schmid, in yesterday's conference call, noted that Johnson is a type of forward missing from the roster:

He’s got pace, which is something that we wanted with a forward up front who can stretch the opponent’s defense. He’s shown his ability to finish in our league, as well. He’s good in the air. He’s a guy who can get on the end of crosses. As you know, we’re a team who does well with our wide play—we get to the end line and we create opportunities in the box—and I think Eddie’s going to be able to take advantage of those opportunities and make us a more dangerous team. We’re very excited, and I’m very excited as a coach to be able to add a player of his ability to the group that we have. It’s just another step forward for us as we try and win more things.
Schmid was also hopeful that this would mean a more regular pairing with Fredy Montero at the top of the Seattle Sounders formation. Rather than rotations for tactical needs, the ideal is now a First XI pair of forwards that are different enough and good enough to become partners. It is a potentially potent offense.

When you now look in the face of Seattle and you’re thinking about—Hey, I’m going up against Eddie Johnson, I’m going up against Fredy Montero, later down the line a Steve Zakuani, a Mauro Rosales. The defense has to spread itself out a little bit.
The Seattle Sounders needed to give up depth to get to that point though. Lamar Neagle was in a battle to be the third healthy wide mid as he clearly would be backing up Alvaro Fernandez and Mauro Rosales. With Christian Sivebaek's preseason so dominant, it would be a difficult road to minutes for the Federal Way native.

At forward, the emergence of a new speed/strength option in David Estrada meant there is a bit of buffer in the loss of Mike Fucito. Still while Fucito showed flashes of scoring ability and notoriously frustrated Jamison Olave, George John and Nemanja Vidic, Estrada was still trying to get a role on the field. The UCLA player slotted in at right mid, center mid, right back (training only) and now as the high forward.

For a team with strong successes in the regular season and Lamar Hunt US Open Cup, the loss of depth could be significant. It could indicate that, instead, the Sounders are now looking at an emphasis on the CONCACAF Champions League and the MLS Cup Playoffs. Those two knockout tournaments value high end talent more than the challenge of a long season or a clearly secondary national cup.

Adrian Hanauer feels that inferring a shift in focus may be jumping to conclusions and points out the other talents added, reminding all that this one deal did not happen in a vacuum.

We want to get better in multiple ways. We want to be better come big games with our starting eleven. We also, obviously, want to be a deep team, as well, for Cups and Champions league. We’ve added pieces to the puzzle pre-season—guys like Christian Sivebaek who have come in and done real well. Guys are returning—we’ve got [Steve] Zakuani on his way to getting healthy. Although, it’s always difficult to part ways with quality young players and quality young men who have been a big part of our organization. We are very excited about brining Eddie to the team…a unique skill set and a type of forward that we don’t currently have on our team. It’s not an indication that we’re going to not try and win everything like we have in the past. It’s just a different roster configuration, I suppose.
That first trophy hunt starts in just a few weeks. The Sounders staff, particularly Dave Tenney, will be pressing Eddie Johnson to prove two things -- that he maintained fitness while at the IMG Academy for the past two months and that Seattle's style is one he can learn quickly.

Johnson himself seemed ready to accept the pressure that will be on him. He was aware of his replacing fan favorites and he knows the goals in Seattle are to collect a couple or more trophies in the 2012 season. He also stated that the pressure will come as much internally as from the outside.

Hanauer and the rest of the Sounders brain trust gambled Friday evening. They took their asset of depth and hoped to get a player who at his best can match Montero's goal scoring prowess. If the brain trust is right, then this is a team that stacks up quite well against the LA Galaxy or Mexican sides. If they are wrong, then the trophy they were most likely to win may now be out of reach.

They're starting to get into form. Injuries AGAIN have given 7 different starting line-ups. Now Gspurning hurt his hip again & may be out for the Union game. Meredith is a good goalie, but still young & inexperienced.

I expect to see the Galaxy "1st team" when they come back in August, when the Sounders open up the CLink to 64,000 fans. Had 39,002 for this one.

I'm telling ya...Montreal is going to have a respectable year. They really impressed the hell out of me in person. They're just a grind it out type team that plays a physical game. Most teams in the league shy away from that style and it starts to bother them. Couldn't be happier for Justin Braun. Saw him play a couple times in high school and knew back then he'd be a pro.

Houston just opened up their new stadium, BBVA Compass stadium. Looks like a great turn out....but I don't know if Texas teams have the longevity...it's fucking HOT here. At least they made the right decision and built the stadium Downtown.

I go to a handful of FC Dallas games every year, and its still not catching on. One main problem is its in Frisco, TX, about 35 miles outside of downtown. They also try to go for the "family friendly" angle, does that ever work? It usually pulls a crowd of 8-14K, capacity is 22k.

It's simply awesome of Seattle and Portland are doing. Cheering, supporting, making noise, and packing their respective stadiums. It's a shame there aren't more nationally televised games for these teams.

I'm not sure how I feel about the MLS becoming a retirement league, but hey, whatever increases a fan base will be great for the league.

Nothing about 7 of the 14 MLS teams losing to USL/NASL teams last night - including the Scorpions over Houston? Sucks for the Scorpions that FC Dallas got knocked out as well so they don't get to host another MLS team (on a non Spurs night) but at least they get an "easier" opponent to potentially advance.

Watched the last 20 minutes of the match on their website. The match kind of felt like Brazil v USA, Valencia had sharp passing and better positioning, but failed to capitalize on 2 additional scoring opportunities.

Houston should have scored a goal in stoppage time and seemed to get a little help from the refs. Stoppage time was 1 minute, and seemed to go on for 2:30.

Jun 22, 2012 - Hanyer Mosquera will miss Sunday's game against the Seattle Sounders after the MLS Disciplinary Committee handed down a three-game suspension to the Portland Timbers centerback on Friday. Mosquera was ruled to have hit LA Galaxy forward Jack McBean and the action was deemed "violent conduct, outside the scope of play and endangered McBean’s safety."

In the 4th minute of stoppage time last Sunday, Mosquera was fighting for a ball with McBean as the Galaxy were clinging to a 1-0 lead. A foul was called at the time, but no card was given. Replays show Mosquera clearly hitting McBean in the jaw with what very much looked like a purposeful swing.

Losing Mosquera is surely a blow to the Timbers, who are facing their arch-rivals this weekend in a game that is made doubly important by the fact that they've won just one of their past six games. Mosquera has started 10 games for the Timbers, who have allowed just 10 goals in his starts, while allowing six goals in their three other games.

Star Fire is their headquarters & training facility. It's not as bad as you make it sound Tlong. Yes it's small, but good complex.

Sounders will play the final at the CLink (if they win against Chivas)

Eddie Johnson been involved in all kinds of crap this year. SJ announcers saying he punched Zayner but the quakes video feed of the match & stuff after was just craptabulous. It's like they took an old webcam & streamed the game. So, hard to say what exactly happened. I do know there's a lot of bad blood between SJ & SEA.
SJ got what they deserved. Especially after they say their going to put out they're best 11 available. Sounders tried to move the game a day & SJ said no. So SJ has 2 days rest & the sounders 1 day. The Sounders fielded a very different group for this one. All of them are workhorses & then subbed in a few towards the end.

Italian defender Alessandro Nesta has signed a two-year deal with the Montreal Impact, according to tvasports.ca.
The deal requires approval from the MLS but due to the July 4 American holiday, the league is unable to officially announce the acquisition.
Nesta spent the past 10 seasons with AC Milan of Italy's Serie A, one of the top soccer leagues in the world.
The move teams him up with a former teammate, recent Impact acquisition Marco Di Vaio. The two broke into professional football together with Italian club Lazio in 1993.
Nesta has appeared in 417 Serie A games with Lazio and Milan between 1993 and 2012. He has also made 78 appearances with Italy's national team. He was part of Italy's 2006 World Cup-winning squad, however an injury earlier in the tournament kept him out of the final game.

Even beating the Seattle Sounders wasn’t enough to save John Spencer.

The Portland Timbers parted ways with the only coach they’ve ever had as an MLS franchise on Monday, with the team stuck with just five wins in 17 games this season and a dismal record away from the Rose City.

Timbers owner Merritt Paulson made the announcement during a press conference at JELD-WEN Field.

General manager Gavin Wilkinson, who helped lure Spencer away from Houston after a successful stint as an assistant with the Dynamo and hired him in August of 2010, will take over as interim head coach. The team will not seek a new head coach before the end of this season, but will instead focus on signing one on a list of 10 potential candiates by the end of the calendar year, according to Paulson.

http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/2012/07/09/breaking-timbers-part-ways-spencer-amid-rough-stretch

Never was a Spencer fan. He's done nothing for the Timbers. Had he loast to the Sounders he'd have been fired then. It was only a matter of time.

Welcome home Braun! Love this move...

http://www.realsaltlake.com/news/2012/07/rsl-acquires-slc-native-justin-braun

SANDY, Utah (July 11, 2012) – Real Salt Lake announced Wednesday that the club has acquired Salt Lake City-native Justin Braun from the Montreal Impact in exchange for a conditional 2014 SuperDraft pick.

A 6-foot-3, 195 pound forward, the 25-year-old Braun will provide depth at striker during the club’s impending CONCACAF Champions League run and MLS Cup Playoff push. Braun will provide depth up top for RSL during the club’s impending CONCACAF Champions League run and MLS Cup Playoff push. RSL has 14 regular-season games remaining in its MLS campaign, along with four group stage matches against CS Herediano (Costa Rica) and Tauro FC (Panama) in CCL play, which kicks off July 31.

Currently in his fifth MLS season, Braun spent his first four years in the league with Chivas USA, signing with the Southern California side after being spotted while playing for the Utah Select Team in an amateur tournament at the Home Depot Center in January 2008.

Braun had a big impact at Chivas USA, scoring 24 goals in 96 regular season games with the Goats. His best year came in 2010, when he led Chivas USA with nine goals in 28 appearances, including 24 starts. Braun also had a solid 2011, tying for the Chivas USA lead with eight goals while adding five assists.

Braun was acquired by Montreal on Nov. 23, 2011, heading north of the border in a trade that sent him and midfielder Gerson Mayen from Chivas USA to the expansion side in exchange for defender James Riley. He didn’t see much time under Impact head coach Jesse Marsch, playing in just 12 of Montreal’s 20 games and registering a lone assist before joining RSL on Wednesday.

For his career, Braun has 24 goals and 13 assists in 108 regular season MLS games. He also has experience with the U.S. national team, receiving call-ups to camps in both January 2010 and January 2011.

Braun, whose family continues to live in the Salt Lake City area, was a prep star at Salt Lake City’s Skyline High School, earning first-team All-State honors and leading the state in scoring in both his junior and senior years. After high school, Braun went on to play at Salt Lake Community College, but was not drafted out of school, playing for amateur teams in the Salt Lake area before being noticed – and signed – by then-Chivas USA coach Preki in 2008.

Braun will wear No. 13 for RSL.

It's great that Di Matteo understands that these games are also here to build the brand. AND he starts and subs in his star players.

I saw the Chelsea v America match in 2009 at Cowboys stadium, Carlo Ancelotti acted like the game was a waste of time. Drogba, Lampard, Cech, and Terry all sat on the bench. Sure we got to see the likes of Eissen, Malouda, Kalou, Pizzarro, Alex, and Carvalho...but come on, put in your star power. This was the first sporting event at Cowboys Stadium, and they brought in 100K of real grass just to appease the Euro team.

Why is the Open Cup of such importance? In every country, are three major cups to win: the league cup, domestic cup, and continental competition. When a team wins all three of these cups, it is called a treble and is considered the most difficult achievement a club can attain. In the US, the top league cup is the MLS Cup, the domestic cup is the US Open Cup, and the continental cup is the CONCACAF Champions League. For those that follow the English Premier League, the Open Cup is equivalent to the FA Cup, CONCACAF Champions League is to the UEFA Champions League, and the MLS Cup is to the English Premier League title. The Cup in our attention is the domestic cup, the US Open Cup. The Open Cup includes qualifying teams from every league in the country, which includes the MLS, NASL, USL Pro, and other amateur teams. A notable amateur team and the only one to advance as far as the 4th round is Cal FC. Managed by former US national team forward Eric Wynalda, Cal FC upset Portland after 120 minutes in the third round and was later knocked out by Seattle in the next round.

That was a pathetic showing for RSL being a man up for over an hour.

Ricardo Salazar is a joke of a ref. Dude made horrible calls on both sides all night. Maybe it's just a coincidence, but the last 3 red cards issued to the Sounders in all competitons have come from Salazar. Anyways, Salazar is very inconsistent in his calls.

But it was a great game.

By Associated Press

MONTREAL -- Jesse Marsch is out as coach of the Montreal Impact after one season in Major League Soccer.
The announcement Saturday came days after the club ended its expansion season with a better-then-expected 12-16-6 record.
"This is not a dismissal or a resignation, rather an amicable parting of ways," said team president Joey Saputo, adding that Marsch and team management had differences of opinion on how the team would be run. "Although the decision was a tough one to make, it was made mutually for the benefit of the club."
Goalkeepers coach Preston Burpo and conditioning coach Adam Rotchstein also left the team, while assistant coaches Mike Sorber, Mauro Biello and Denis Hamlett will remain.
The 38-year-old Marsch thanked the team and the fans and called the move "the right decision." He was signed away from an assistant coaches' job with the U.S. national team in August 2011 to lead Montreal into its first year in the MLS.
Marsch was a fiery presence on the sidelines and was fined twice and suspended one game for disputing officials' calls.
There were also questions during the season about his game management. Montreal conceded a league-worst 17 goals in the final 15 minutes of games.
But he was popular with fans and the media. He hired a French tutor before the season and by the end, granted an interview in French on a local TV station.
