Colts and Jags claim they are playing to win.
To the point of #1 overall, is Jim Irsay correct? What has history shown?

"We're not going after anything but a win n Jacksonville, look at the last half century of SupBowl winners n c how many had 1st pick," Jim Irsay wrote on Twitter late Tuesday night.

To me it sounds like he is saying how many teams who get the first pick actually win the super bowl the next year.

But either way, I think you try to win no matter who you are and what position winning/losing will get you. That's just me. Tanking is a disgrace.

^ Well of course not if it was just for the following years shot at a Bowl and no no more.

But this list shows many #1s became part of long running Bowl Winning/Bowl Contending teams. Certainly not all by themselves but they sure could be called catalysts.

Bubba Smith (Colts) and Ron Yary (Vikings) were both big parts of teams that went to multiple Super Bowls. George Rogers started for the Redskins when they went to the SB in 1987 (although he didn't play in the game; Timmy Smith played and set a SB rushing record.)

And then there are good players on that list that didn't make it to the SB, not necessarily through any fault of their own (Steve Bartkowski, Earl Campbell, Billy Sims, O.J.).

I'm actually not sure what point Irsay is making. Obviously a team that drafts #1 is generally going to have a tough time reaching a Super Bowl, because it's a bad team- it has to be bad to draft #1. That's the correlation, I think.

Russell Maryland was part of the Cowboys dynasty.

and Irsay is saying this because he's trying to spin a really shitty situation. That franchise is completely lost and rudderless at the moment. Nobody there has any idea what the fuck to do and nobody is steering the ship.

Not to say that they are all stupid for being that way. It's a tough decision to make. On the one hand, Peyton is approaching tired old shit bag status, his neck is in bad shape, and he may never play well again. On the other hand, he's Peyton Fucking Manning, the 2nd best QB of his era and a top 5 QB all time. If he recovers, he might have 5+ more years of great football left.

But those guys were hired to make the tough decisions. Either you're committed to Manning or you're committed to rebuilding for the future. Being so wishy washy all year has fucked them over, and will continue to do so.

They'd probably get fined for saying they want to lose, so they pay lip service to it. Luck is by-far the biggest value pick in the draft, whether you need a QB or not. Nobody ever won a super bowl by intentionally passing up talent or value when they had the opportunity.
