Jets coach Rex Ryan stuck up for embattled wide receiver Santonio Holmes on Monday, saying he expects the receiver to be back next year despite his bickering with teammates.
"There's a lot of positive things about Santonio," Ryan said. "Are there some things we need to get corrected? Absolutely. And it's not just with him, but others as well, myself."
The fallout from the Jets’ 8-8 season got uglier Monday, a day after the season-ending 19-17 loss to the Dolphins.
As players cleaned out their lockers at the training center in Florham Park, linebacker Bart Scott flipped the middle finger at a Post photographer and then said about his future with the team, "all I know is I got a guaranteed contract for $4 million" as he walked out of the
locker room.
As Scott flipped off the photographer he said, "Take a picture of this. Get out of my [bleeping] face."
Holmes, who was benched at the end of Sunday's game, entered the locker room, grabbed some things from his locker, and was escorted out by a PR staffer without speaking to reporters.
"He's been a tremendous player for us," Ryan said. "He's won a ton of games for this franchise and he's been a good teammate."
More came to light about Holmes' rift with teammates, too. According to sources, the problem escalated last Wednesday when Holmes and quarterback Mark Sanchez had words during a players' only meeting organized by Sanchez. Sanchez held the same meeting a day later and Holmes was a no-show. This led to the blow up Sunday on the field when Holmes and Wayne Hunter argued in the huddle, leading to Holmes getting benched.
Holmes was one of six captains Ryan chose this season. It was the first season Ryan ever selected captains – and it will be the last.
"To be honest with you, this is something I think I made a huge mistake in," Ryan said. "Not just by naming Santonio a captain, but all the captain things. It's not something I truly believe in, but I put that thing on there. That’s not a reflection of anybody in particular, but we are not going to have those anymore. … I think that pulls away from the team a little bit. That may work for other franchises, but it doesn’t work for me."
Several of Holmes' teammates declined to speak about him. Guard Matt Slauson said no one is expecting an apology from Holmes.
“We’ve been through this a couple times now, and I don’t know – it hasn’t happened yet," Slauson said. "Nobody’s expecting it. All we’re trying to focus on now is building a team, building a group of guys that we can win with. As far as all the stuff with him and that situation, I think as far as everybody’s concerned, it’s done. It’s over with. Our season’s done. We should just bury it and move on. Because we’ve got to focus on coming back and winning."
Ryan addressed the team Monday morning and gave an emotional speech in which he cried. Slauson said Ryan pleaded with the team to regain their team unity.
Several players talked about the chemistry problems that existed on the 2011 team. Other players refused to speak. In addition to Holmes and Scott, cornerback Darrelle Revis, normally a media-friendly player, declined to speak to reporters.
