I caught a Toros game on cable the other night and thought it might be interesting if we had some regular news on our D league affiliate posted every week. Chuck Dumper keeps up with them in Austin and there is also a blog.
http://www.torosnation.com/
Regarding the game on the D league showcase, the announcers were pretty high on the Toros since they are leading the D league. Kept mentioning the association with the Spurs and how their team was given the same good management.
Interesting players:
Jusin Dentmon PG might be worth a look since we are down a PG. Although only 6' he's looked very quick and is a scorer (34 pts) as well as a pretty good assist man (8)
Cory Joseph couldn't hit the side of a barn on his jumper. He shot two balls that were so far off-line they hit the corner formed by the backboard and the hoop. He will need a lot of work with Chip to get into a Spurs rotation, but he's young.
Lance Thomas came back from a short stint with the Hornes and looked pretty smooth. One of those skinny forwards that moves well and seems to wind up in the right spot at the right time.
Eric Dawson is a 6'9" PF who looks like a bruiser that works inside and rebounds. Average shooter.
DaSean Butler: I had lost track of him and didn't realize he was with the Toros. He got really good elevation on one jumper so maybe his rehab on that knee is working out.
These are the type of guys who may or may not develop into bench NBA players. I suppose they aren't ready or the Spurs might have pulled them up to the home club.

Eric Dawson is a 6'9" PF who looks like a bruiser that works inside and rebounds. Average shooter.I'd characterize him as a 6'9" center. Very strong but I think his conditioning leaves a lot to be desired. Calling him an average shooter is an improvement though. He's hitting regularly from the key this season.
I like Lance Thomas. Would think about calling him up if Malcom Thomas hadn't been.
I'll give Butler some more time to truly get into shape, but he also has a knack for making plays.
As LJ said elsewhere, Dentmon is probably this season's Anthony Grundy, who won't do anything when he's called up -- but it's not going to hurt to find this out quickly.
They'll play Thursday at noon on NBAtv. The Toros are having a watch party at Big Daddy's Burgers at Research and Burnet.

I was rooting for DeSean Butler and like you said, he was making some nice plays--but once I saw him running back on defense and it seemed like he was sorta dragging that injured leg. He has it wrapped above and below the knee so maybe the bandage support is hampering him a little.
He would be a great comeback story if he can make it back to where he was or even close. That scene in the NCAA playoffs where he's lying on the floor with the WV coach cradling his head to comfort him is indelibly stamped into my memory.
I know they have a high draft pick investment in Joseph, but I'd still bring up Dentmon at this point instead of Joseph.

Too late. They've already called up Joseph. To call up Dentmon, they'd have to add his salary. Joseph is a sunk cost, salary wise.

Does Kabongo have a future with the Spurs?
That question is pretty much why he was brought to camp and then put on the Toros.
So I'd say that's a resounding "maybe".

The Toros couldn't even get his name right. They have Kickingstallionisms instead of Kickingstallionsims.
Regardless, if the point of drafting him was to drum up interest in the Toros, I think it's working.

The D-League, for the first time, is banning a defensive team from calling timeout during an inbounds play if the offense previously called a timeout to set up that play. In other words: no consecutive timeouts. The rule applies for the entire game, not just crunch time, Reed says.
Some other rule changes for NBDL

Josh Howard looking forward to starting over with Toros -
See more at: http://www.torosnation.com/2013/11/josh-howard-looking-forward-to-starting-over-with-toros/#sthash.QJmqQMNe.dpuf
Forced to rehab on his own, Howard is more determined than ever to prove he isn’t done yet. At 33 years old, he’s excited for the opportunity.
“I’m proving to myself that I can come back from another injury and getting the opportunity to play in the NBA to further my career is the thing I’m really enjoying. It’s going to be my eleventh year, and I’m right back in it like it’s my first,” said Howard.
The Spurs waived Howard a day after signing him, then invited him to the Austin Toros training camp. Howard knows San Antonio believes in him and is grateful that he gets to stay in a Texas.
“It speaks a lot, what they think about me and what I think about them for them to continue to give me the opportunity; the last two years they actually wanted me to come down and play for them and unfortunately I didn’t take that chance but for them to still consider me one of the top players out there, and I still know they’re one of the top organizations, and to get this opportunity, it’s been a great experience for me,” Howard said.

Looking at Toros stats, it seems that there isn't a player really standing out. I guess Dawson could still be a solid deep end of the bench player but nothing more.
If Spurs start to have some injuries which would open active roster spots, they should give a try at some D-League forwards. Devin Ebanks put good stats in the first couple of games and Malcolm Thomas started with a 36/18 game.

Not a complete shock. Almost any time the Spurs reach into the dleague, it's to a team other than Austin.

That's why they're in the dleague.
Sometimes we can find a decent player over there. Someone that could log some minutes in the NBA.
It won't be on the Toros though.

They'll be some lineup shuffles soon enough, but yeah -- nothing notable outside of Dawson.

I would still like to give Malcom Thomas another shot if he is hitting threes.

31/13 for Thomas today with a 6/9 from behind the arc:

If Malcolm Thomas can do that he's worth a shot.
Is there MLE left for a multi year min deal? The standard team option, give a shot and lock up control.

Not enough ... yet. They have $615k left, and signing Thomas now would take up about $726k. They'd have to wait another 11 games for the proration to be low enough. They could still give him a two-year deal without digging into the MLE. I think they're keeping it for Bertans, whose salary is small enough to fit in there on a three-year deal.
If Thomas can hit the 3, he'd be intriguing indeed, start Boris and have him play with Splitter, better spacing all around...
