Year 2 of Wade's defense. Let's keep the boys healthy and make another run.
Go Texans!

Lot's to be excited about. Young, dominate defense and all the guys back healthy. Time to come out of the shadow and take it to the next level.

It'll be interesting what they do with Mario Williams given how much production they got out of the other OLBs.
benefactor
01-15-2012, 04:15 PM
Foster being re-signed is the priority. If it means letting Williams walk then so be it. They have proven they can get the job done with Reed and Barwin manning the OLB spots.
Dr. Gonzo
01-15-2012, 04:15 PM
They can't franchise him, it would cost too much. They could lose Foster if they give Mario too much. I say let him walk if he doesn't go for a modest extension. They can't risk the future by handcuffing themselves with his salary.

Tbh if they lose him and use the freed up cap space to get a real #2 corner or #2 receiver since Kareem Jackson and Jacoby Jones suck they'd be stacked next year.

Yeah...lot's of flexibility right now. Signs point to them probably just letting Mario go next season. He's a force but they need to address other areas much more than they need to re-sign him.

The Texans have signed former Cowboys ILB Bradie James, according to reports.

04-12-2012, 02:18 PM
IRVING, Texas – Bradie James will be reuniting with former Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips on Houston.
James agreed to a one-year deal with the Texans, according to a source, and put him in position to replace Demeco Ryans, who was traded earlier this offseason to Philadelphia, at inside linebacker in Phillips’ 3-4 scheme.
James started 13 games for the Cowboys in 2011 but had his playing time cut back dramatically. He finished with 53 tackles, one tackle for loss, two quarterback pressures, two pass deflections a forced fumble and fumble recovery.
James, 31, started every game during Phillips’ tenure as Dallas’ head coach and recorded at least 130 tackles in each season, including a career-high eight sacks in 2008. He led the Cowboys in tackles from 2005-10, the longest streak in team history.
The Cowboys did not make an effort to keep James, signing Dan Connor to a two-year deal in the first few days of free agency to compete with Bruce Carter, last year’s second-round pick.

Made a hell of a splash last year. We'll see what's on their mind for this year. If there is anything I trust Smith and Kubiak with, it's the draft.
Probably go OLB with the first then possibly O-line with the second. Should still be good WR value in the third and that extra fourth is just gravy.

Best defensive player: Houston defensive end J.J. Watt. Not easy for a 3-4 defensive end, particularly one in the first month of his second year as a pro, and particularly one playing with a nagging elbow injury that requires the elbow to be braced, to lead the NFL with 7.5 sacks and five passes batted down at the line. He makes it clear, correctly, that being on a defense with a great young cast has been a huge assist for him. But the way he can speed about the edge and bull-rush inside with equal skill has made it impossible to block him one-on-one consistently.
He's had at least one sack in every game this year, and dating to last year's two playoff games, Watt has 11 sacks in his last six games -- insane for a 3-4 defensive end. Notified of this incredibly prestigious honor, being named the best defensive player of the first month of the season, Watt said after his two-sack game against Tennessee Sunday: "I appreciate that, but it's only one quarter of the season. We've got lots to do.''

Not to overshadow Schaub's big day, but the one thing I wanted to see out of him he still couldn't produce. He could have ended the game in overtime by hitting an open receiver but wound up underthrowing the ball and getting it picked off. The defense/Andre Johnson bailed him out and the Texans won the game.
Him not making that throw worries me. It tells me he's still not clutch enough to do what is necessary to win when it's all on the line. At some point, he's going to have to prove he can win a game for the Texans with his arm when everything goes to shit like it did Sunday. There has to come a time when he plays like a champion and not a game manager for this team to be serious about a title.
I don't understand why Foster is being taken out of the passing game. Teams are scheming to stop the run...loosen up the defense with some short passes, Ray Rice style.

Yeah, Schaub still has to prove himself. The obvious thing about the defense was that two seasons ago they couldn't bail out anything or anyone. So I took yesterday's game as a welcome chance for the Texans to mount a come back after being down in a game. Even against the lowly Jags. The Texans have to learn how to win anywhich way they can.

I don't understand why Foster is being taken out of the passing game. Teams are scheming to stop the run...loosen up the defense with some short passes, Ray Rice style.
Kubiak is one of the biggest offensive enigmas on the planet. Sometimes he looks flat brilliant then others you are like wtf?
Foster is on pace for 400 carries. You gotta limit his touches somehow and Tate is still hurt.

Its not just on Schaub. The whole team came out lethargic and Shayne Graham can't hit anything outside the 30. Schaub drove them down the field in position to get a TD but got a field goal instead. Shayne Graham hits the FG in regulation and its game over. Down 14 and Schaub led them back.

Btw, remember this line isnt as strong as last year with Winston and Briesel leaving. The times they tried running screens this year they got blown up.

I think that false start with 5 seconds left in regulation ticked me off more than Schaub's pick off in OT. Graham would have made the 42-yard FG. It was a stupid penalty.

Schaub with yet another pick in OT. Better get that whole defense healthy because this game manager isn't carrying them in the clutch.

Them boyz on Kirby pulled out another one. Positives I took from the game...
- No Ben Tate and running game still works
- Gym Shorts is a dumbass
- Kareem Jackson held his own against Megatron
- AJ confirms he is back
- Just came off an exhausting OT win 4 days ago and pull out this win

DETROIT -- Andre Johnson (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/4461/andre-johnson) outdid his favorite receiver, Calvin Johnson (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/10447/calvin-johnson), Sunday in the Texans’ 34-31 overtime win over the Lions Thursday.
Andre Johnson also followed up his career best 14-catch, 273-yard game against Jacksonville with another big day: Nine catches for 188 yards.
His two-game total is the best two-game receiving total in the history of the NFL, according to Elias.

Kareem Jackson put himself on Megatron. Not the coaches.
At the half, Kareem Jackson went to coach Vance Joseph to talk about changing assignments.
Kareem said "Let me chase him"
Vance said "Start chasing him"

The AFC is coming down to the only 2 real teams with a possibility of coming out of the AFC - Broncons and Pats
That secondary is brutal w/o JJ. Brady going Ham? Ok, it happens. Stafford? Thanksgiving game, desperate road team...ok. Henne? Defcon 5.

Yep...it's straight garbage beyond him...at least at the corners(I'd argue they are one of the better teams in the league at safety with Quin and Manning). For all the good Rick Smith has done in the draft he's missed pretty bad on corners.
Going straight man most of the game against Brady was a pretty poor decision too having this knowledge.

I like this loss in hindsight. How the Texans react to this might even be a bigger test than getting shit on by the Pats last night. Even the Pats have won 18 straight only to lose the SB. If the Texans lose two or three out of the next three then they're fools gold.

Good write up on Watt.
In case you weren’t watching this season, Watt set about redefining what is possible at the 3-4 end position. People talk about how Lawrence Taylor burst into the league and changed the way people thought about 3-4 outside linebackers. You are witnessing the same thing happening now with Watt. He gave the all-time single-season sack record a close run, finishing with 20.5 sacks and actually getting to the quarterback 25 times this season. That ties him for sixth on the all-time list with L.T. himself. Watt recorded the same number of sacks in a season as one of the better performances from one of the greatest rush threats to ever play the game, and he did it from an interior line position. Make no mistake, that’s exactly where Watt played. Though the Texans moved him around, they kept him inside most of the time, with just 6.9% of his snaps coming on the edge in a four-man line.
However, Watt wasn’t just about the sacks. He batted down 15 passes on the season. The next best mark over the past five years of play is the 10 Johnny Jolly recorded in 2009. What about his play against the run? His tackles in the run game this season totaled 11 yards of gain for the offense. When Watt made a tackle in the run game the back averaged 0.16 yards, and it’s not like he was missing many tackles either, allowing just two to get away from him. He made a ridiculous 72 defensive stops, 18 better than the next best player at his position, who in turn was 13 clear of the chasing pack.
Watt became the first player to ever top 100 grading points in a single season at any position, ending the year with a farcical looking +101.7 grade on 958 snaps. This time last season we anointed Justin Smith the second-best player in football, and one of the most dominant defenders in the league, with a grade of +46.5 on the season. Watt more than doubled that, and this time last year we would have told you that there wasn’t much room for a player to be better than Smith. J.J. Watt is completely re-writing what we thought was possible from his position. We are witnessing something very special, and, if nothing else, we have witnessed the first winner of this award in action.

Texans won't rule out drafting a QB
Our sources wouldn’t rule out the possibility [of drafting a QB], pointing to the situations of the 49ers and Seahawks, neither of whom felt they needed a starter when they selected Colin Kaepernick and Russell Wilson in the second and third rounds, respectively, the past two years.
We hear the Texans would love to have a mobile QB like one of the two aforementioned rising stars.
“Steve Young won a Super Bowl in this offense,” noted a daily team observer. “John Elway was a really good runner. Jake Plummer was a really good runner. When you’re running a bootleg, there is only one guy there to stop the QB. A mobile QB is great for the system.”
