I wrote Mad Game about Kobe as a young guy. He had a balls-to-the-wall madness back then. He still rocks that. Tex+Phil had him sublimate it

At 19, Kobe told me he just wanted to "be the man." He scored 50 in a couple of high school games+longed to do it again+again.

Quote:
lazenby Roland Lazenby
Kobe was frustrated, tangled in Del Harris' web back then. Told me he knew he was going to be great, just had to figure out how to do it.

Quote:
lazenby Roland Lazenby
When Kobe was 19, I asked MJ about him. He just needs to figure out the math, MJ told me. I told Kobe. I can do that, he said. And he has.

Quote:
lazenby Roland Lazenby
Kobe's ultimate competition is MJ. That's why MJ watches him. MJ made people think what he was doing wasn't human. Ditto the Kobester.

I never said Kobe was better than MJ. MJ just told me Kobe's the only one to have done the work, to deserve comparison.

"Kobe has patterned himself after Michael, and there are a lot of identical things there,” Jackson told the Los Angeles Times, “but it's one thing to hope to be like him, it's another thing to be like him."

"I'm with (ESPN's) Bill Simmons on this," he added. "We have to take Michael Jordan out of the equation. Stop comparing anyone to Michael Jordan. It's just not fair. He was remarkable. ...

"(Kobe) doesn't shoot the same percentage (.455) as Michael (.497). He has the same characteristics as Michael, but he's not the same player. It takes nothing away from him — he's a great player in his own right." - Phil Jackson

Kobe is as close as we will get to MJ until another SG steps up. That's the bottom line, the distance between MJ and Kobe is arguable, but the bottom line is that nobody is closer.

Wade played like MJ in the '06 finals. Not the same position, but when Magic retired in '92 he was considered better than MJ.

Also not the same position, but LeBron is on pace of getting closer to MJ's level than Kobe. Already was ROY right from hs! And 2 MVP's. His defense could land him an DPOY award too. And the Heat will win various championships.

Kobe on a skills level is as close as we have/have had to Michael Jordan. Don't think anyone will disagree with this statement, and if they do then they're just hating.

With that said, he's not close to the defender Michael was, isn't as good a team player, and isn't as good of a passer. He's not on MJ's level, but he's the closest. Wade is also up there, imo. Lebron plays a totally different game from Wade/Kobe/Jordan so the comparison isn't fair.

Frankly, MJ was spot on... Kobe should've done the math, and if he was anywhere near as good, should've taken over when Shaq walked. The reality is Shaq will always be considered the best player in that 3-peat, and loom any comparisons...

Instead, Kobester tanked, quit, raped, snitched, then started to actually realize what Mike meant by math, but it was too late.

It's true. There has never been another player that you could compare to MJ since MJ retired other than Kobe.

I have to disagree here. Players don't eat cap space, owners do. Players just agree to the terms of the contract, and the owners have to fork over the money. It's totally up to the owners.

lol thinking I hate Kobe...read up son...don't talk shit when you don't know it. I've said many times on this forum that Kobe is the best player in the game today..and I still believe it. He just ain't Mike..and shouldn't be compared to him.

Fair enough Spur fan. Fair enough.

When is that?

This year. The defense is there despite the fatigue of playing the most games in the association. The offense will take a minute. In about 10 more games the real potential of this Laker squad will begin to manifest itself.

Big 3? Check
Shooters to provide spacing? Check
Hustlers/Rebounders? Check

This team will shock a lot of people. Just need a PG. $9M TPE we got from Dallas should do the trick.

It's true. There has never been another player that you could compare to MJ since MJ retired other than Kobe.

No one here ever said otherwise.

That doesn't mean Kobe = MJ

If you nut huggers really believed in your boy, you wouldn't raise the ghost of MJ so often to calibrate him.

I agree with this first reasonable post in days ... I think most logical NBa fans even Laker ones realized Kobe does NOT = MJ. But you guys tend to exaggerate the gap between the two like it's a gulf. Clearly Mj is better but the morons that put he is >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> better than Kobe are just as foolish as the ones that feel he is = or > than Jordan.

Jordan was so much better in terms of accomplishments and his impact on the game during his time that there is quite a gulf between him and Kobe.

Remember, Kobe is maybe top 12 all time, Jordan is 1st. That's a sizable gap.

I remember for a while Jordan was being compared to Dr J, but he far surpassed Dr J. During that time, it was quite comparison to overcome.

Kobe has not overcome his comparison. I think he's embraced it and chased it to the point of lessening his teams ability to win games, though I am not saying they are better without him, just that they could be so much better with him than they are now, were he to play to win instead of chasing the carrot on a stick.

How can Kobe be their Robin when

1) Pau was 0-12 without him and...
2) Shaq won once without him, meanwhile Kobe repeated with Gasol

Can you dig it?

Shaq will always be viewed as the superior player

3 different franchises to the Finals
Rules were made to stop Shaq

Rose > Kobe and he still has plenty of time to go

You maybe right. Kobe gave Rose the highest compliment saying only Paul's and rose's competitive spirit matched his own. Who are we missing from that statement? :lol
