I agree that the bills shouldn't be passed, but it is kinda funny that the guy who plasters his face on huge ads begging people to give him money is the guy demanding that the internet be free.

Yeah, the website says its still fully available, just on PCs there is a "blackout" message that comes up, but they also notify you that there is a way around it.

I do not understand why in the world you think what they did was idiotic. Please explain? I think that it was the perfect way to show people who are unaware of the issues of these bills and the effect they might have on the internet. I may be wrong, but I assume that you use wikis a lot and would value them as a source of info. The people who create these wikis feel that they face may face unjust prosecution/persecution if these bills were passed. Maybe you don’t believe so, but at least it gets the issue out for discussion for the general public.

I will grant you that Wikipedia did not totally take their page down. But I don't think that was necessary. If you went to the English language page and didn't circumvent the "blackout" message, it fits the definition of a blackout in many ways. In the military sense of hiding lights from the enemy, as in the lights are still on (web page still up), but they can’t be seen. Also, definition #6 is pretty dead on. Other than that I feel it’s just semantics.

blackout [ˈblækaʊt]
n
1. (Military) the extinguishing or hiding of all artificial light, esp in a city visible to an enemy attack from the air
6. (Communication Arts / Broadcasting) the suspension of radio or television broadcasting, as by a strike or for political reasons
vb black out (adverb)
1. (tr) to obliterate or extinguish (lights)
2. (Military) (tr) to create a blackout in (a city etc.)
4. (Communication Arts / Broadcasting) (tr, adverb) to stop (news, a television programme) from being released or broadcast

As of what will happen now, I think this article touches on that:

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/01/19/sopa_is_gone_are_you_happy_now/

Open ... and Shut In response to internet technology companies leading a rousing protest against SOPA and PIPA, these bills appear to be doomed to ignominious defeat. Even the co-sponsors of these anti-piracy bills are deserting their legislation, leaving the tech world to cheer its success.

But what kind of success did we achieve?

As written, the SOPA and PIPA were bad bills. They deserved criticism and lots of second thoughts. Through protests led by Wikipedia, Google, and others, the anti-SOPA/PIPA crowd managed to get the ear of Congress and, to a lesser degree, the general public, and shout down bad legislation.

And that's the problem, actually. The shouting.

Former Mozilla CEO John Lilly captured this best, arguing, "What’s extremely discouraging to me right now is that I don’t really see how we [the tech world and the US Congress] can have a nuanced, technically-informed, respectful discussion/debate/conversation/working relationship."
