If he's got skills, I don't care what color he is. Would have loved a young Warren Moon on the Cowboys. I'd take RGIII too, to be honest, once he's seasoned.

After watching Colt McCoy and his noodle arm the last two years, absolutely. I'd trade #4, #22 and any 2013 pick after the first round for the darkie.

Black, white, yellow- as long as it isn't spunky little Colt, I don't care.

Warren Moon was a BOSS. Black QBs should try to emulate him and not Cunningham.

Keep in mind Warren Moon didn't make his NFL debut until he was 28 and had played a bunch of years in Canada. IIRC he was a running QB early in his career in Edmonton or wherever he was playing up there.

Cunningham turned into a pocket passer later in his career too. I don't remember him scrambling very much when he was with the Vikings.

I get what you guys are saying about black quarterbacks but Christ, do you really have to split the fucking atom to play the position? Everyone talks about how smart Colt McCoy is and he sucks balls.

Just give me ability, instincts and a willingness to learn and adjust and I'll roll with it.

Well, you need mental smarts AND mental toughness. Colt McCoy has the smarts, but like every other UT players, Mack Brown's coddling made him mentally soft. This shoulda been evident when he was in the locker room playing catch with his daddeh during what SHOULD have been the biggest game of his career.

1/46, JT. 1/46. No starting black qbs in the playoffs this year. One in 2010 (lost in WC game), one in 2009 (lost in WC game). They fucking suck, and the fact that this guy is a Big 12 QB only exacerbates the problem.

Thanks, Mark May. Don't act like you have any special insight into this player or can offer up any opinion that hasn't been regurgitated by the mothership already.

Here's all you need to know:

-He's taken maybe 5 snaps under center his entire career
-gimmicky, shotgun formation QB
-Played in the Big 12, where QBS have hyper-inflated stats and become garbage pro QBS.

Here's a stat you'll love: No Big 12 QB has ever won a playoff game as a starter. Kordell Stewart beat the Ravens back in 2001 back when it was still the Big 8 (props to Blake for that find), and that's the last one.

So let's recap: He's black, plays in a gimmicky offense, and his conference has done nothing but drop turds at the QB position.

But I'm sure he'll be different...

When it comes to black QBs, it's an easy assumption to make. History supports my argument. Nothing supports your argument.

Btw, way to skirt the Big 12 point when it got thrown back in your face.

Learn to read, you god-fearing mongoloid. His blackness is but one factor in his doomed career. He's a Big 12 QB, only played out of the shotgun, and went against horrible defensive teams week after week. I have to keep repeating this cause that point is simply not getting through to you.

When an entire conference's QB's suck in the pros for damn near 20 years, you should probably take a hint. Now add his unfortunate racial predicament to the picture and the odds are even further stacked against him.

The other thing is that while Baylor's receivers aren't world beaters, they were WAAAAAAAAY better than the trash Luck had to throw to at Stanford. Luck also demonstrates the ability to involve multiple tight ends in the passing game, while throwing to the tight end is something the black QB has historically struggled with (like Mike Vick ignoring Brent Celek his entire career in Philly).

Baylor's receivers were pretty damn good; that's worth mentioning. I don't know anything about Stanford's receiving core, but Baylor's was well above average. Hell, they may end up being better than the receivers Griffin sees in Cleveland. Griffin's ability to hit his receivers in the hands at all points on the field was remarkable, though. I think people will be surprised at how accurate Griffin is when he's in the pros.

All that said, Luck has all the traditional quarterback skills in spades (snicker) and is an outstanding athlete to boot. I'm a huge Baylor homer, but it's completely logical that Luck is the runaway first pick and is likely to be a better pro. I'm not going to say that Griffin can't be a good NFL quarterback, but if you're picking this high in the draft, you're hoping for a guy with hall of fame potential, and that looks more like Luck at the moment.

I have a hard time seeing any young QB successful in Cleveland when their receivers are THAT bad. I agree Colt McCoy sucks and should be cut but I wouldn't expect Griffin or Luck for that matter to do anything to turn Cleveland around when Greg Little is their #1 receiver.

FYI, RG3 came in at 6'2 3/8 and 223lbs.

He also confirmed he is an athletic freak...4.4 in the 40 and a 39in vert.

There were also reports that he interviewed very well...no surprise there.

So he's undersized, can run fast and jump high.

Three extremely important qualities an NFL QB should possess tbh

Gotta agree with this too, JT. Although I think Greg Little has a lot of promise, he's no #1 WR option by a longshot at this point, and Massaquoi and Cribbs aren't either. They're also hurting at RB. Hillis is their best option and he's an injury-prone diva. Hardesty and Ogbonononononononayaya just plain suck.

He looks like a little kid, too.

I hear you guys, but at some point you've got to address the QB position regardless of the other holes.

Keep waiting and best case you end up as the '90s Steelers- talent all over the field but they can't win the big one because they're trotting out dogmeat like Neil O'Donnell, Kordell Stewart and Tommy Maddox.

Our receivers do blow, no question about that.

Obstructed_View
02-27-2012, 11:43 AM
But the QB problem to be addressed isn't the QB position. The best left tackle in the game can't protect a QB who has to stand there for 15 seconds waiting for one of his scrubs to get open. Griffin won't solve that problem. Luck won't solve that problem. Yeah, Griffin will run, and yeah he's fast and he's courageous, and yeah, he'll get pummeled half to to death before the bye week. Historically, it's not that black QBs don't succeed, it's that run-first QBs don't succeed. Cleveland's receivers will make him a run-for-your-fucking-life QB.

Then they can get the damned receivers later. It's a lot tougher to find a good quarterback than it is to find good receivers. What's the highest round any of Aaron Rodgers's receivers was picked in? Third, in the case of Greg Jennings?

Just get the quarterback. Worry about the rest later.

When you have a top 5 pick every year (not trying to be a dick just stating reality for Cleveland) then they can have an RG3 type QB every year. It's not like RG3 is some can't miss QB prospect. There are QBs with his potential in the draft every year.

Greg Jennings was a 2nd rounder iirc

If you're Cleveland you have just as good a chance as RGIII panning out as some middle of the round QB like Jake Locker/Christian Ponder next season.

Are NFL per. and draft experts over-hyping RGIII? I was looking at one of Mel Kiper's mock drafts, and based on Kiper's take, RGIII seems like a can't miss prospect. This mock draft from Kiper was dated Jan. 18, 2012:

"Griffin made big strides this past season, particularly with his deep accuracy. He is a big-time athlete at the quarterback position but has developed a very good pocket presence and the ability to read the game, and his big arm comes with a nice touch on intermediate throws. He is a leader and has intangibles that should really impress evaluators during the draft process".

With the amount of gaps this team has I think they should use it on a skill player who's more likely to succeed

a.) They've tried to make it work with one dogshit, noodle-armed, middle-round QB after another over the last decade (Luke McCown, Charlie Frye, Colt McCoy) and it hasn't worked. QB is a premium position and you have to pay a premium price for one. Rummaging through the bargain bin has gotten them nowhere.

On a personal level, if I have to watch one more low-upside scrub with :cryheart:cry and :crygrit:cry who :cryloves Cleveland:cry I'm going to stick my head in the oven. Enough is enough. Get someone in here who can play. I'm tired of watching Rudy Rutteger play QB for this team.

b.) The biggest gap is at QB. In today's NFL if you don't have one you don't have anything. DoK, the Cardinals went from Kurt Warner to Derek Anderson with roughly the same level of supporting-cast talent. Was there a difference in results or not?

c.) Holmgren can't afford to waste another season with the likes of McCoy. He's 9-23 in two years, 1-11 in the division, and he has the most knee-jerk owner in the league at his back. I honestly don't know if he'll survive another 4-12 season with no solution at QB.

d.) There is no non-QB skill player worth taking in the top five. Not Justin Blackmon. Draft him to play here and keep the QB and he'll average about eight yards per catch and all the fans will be screaming that :cryColt still needs more weapons:cry

I'm not saying RGIII is the alpha and omega of QB prospects but at some point the position needs to be addressed in a serious way. This is as good a year as any.

Edward

IMO they can suck for 1 more year and then draft a white QB who actually has a chance at winning a superbowl (like Barkley).

I hear ya, man...and I generally agree with most of your posts in this thread. In the NFL the haves and have-nots are separated by good QB's--but I think you're just desperate to get anything as good as mediocre at QB--like Bills, Dolphins, and Redskins fans feel. But mortgaging all those picks for a guy who's so not-ready for the NFL and comes from a conference and offensive system (and race) chock fulla failure, you have to have a logical perspective when assessing it.

Not to mention he'd be going up against the Steelers and Ravens defenses, as well as an up-and-coming Bengals D. He's going to get destroyed in that division.

As for your other point, USC QB's--although unspectacular--have accomplished more than Big 12 QB's. Cassel isn't great by any stretch, but he did have 27/7 in 2010, and would've won the division this year if not for injuries to 2 of his 3 biggest weapons, as well as his own injuries. That division sucked ass. Sanchez is not much else either, but he's 4-2 in the playoffs in 3 seasons, including wins over Palmer, Rivers, Manning, and Brady (all on the road). In 2010 he played great in the postseason.

Big 12 QB's have a bust rate of 100%.

IAs for your other point, USC QB's--although unspectacular--have accomplished more than Big 12 QB's.

I'm playing Devil's advocate a little bit here, tbh. I like Matt Barkley a lot, actually.

My problem is that there's this notion- at least among Browns fans- that Barkley will be there for the taking next year. I hear it all the time: "Let's give Colt another year and go out and get Barkley next year."

Thing is, if there's one team in front of you in the 2013 Draft, and they're dead-set on a QB, you're not getting Matt Barkley. Good chance you won't have the means or the opportunity to "go get him."

Ryan Fitzpatrick
02-28-2012, 03:01 PM
That's a fair point, but I'm still not sold on the theory of trading up now to get "anybody but Colt."

Also, going into next year how many teams can you say are clearly worse than the Browns? In the AFC I can only think of the Jags, but they just drafted a QB (although he sucks) and will probably wait till he gets receivers around him before giving up. The Bills are the only other team in the AFC with a chance to suck as bad as those two.

In the NFC you have Washington, Minnesota, TB, STL, and Seattle to contend with. Minnesota just drafted a QB, Freeman crashed back down to earth but he's still young, and the Rams are either going to draft RG3, or keep Bradford and accumulate picks (that would be the better move). Assuming the teams who just drafted QB's stick with their guys, I think Washington, Buffalo, and Seattle are your main competition for him. Are the Browns better than any of those teams? Maybe Washington...

Goran Dragic
02-28-2012, 03:04 PM
I'd say Washington, Tampa and Seattle will all be better than Cleveland. I can't honestly think of a team that looks worse than Cleveland right now.

Ryan Fitzpatrick
02-28-2012, 03:19 PM
Seattle will probably be better. They have an underrated and solid young D, and they have an above average WR corps, TE, and RBs:

Sidney Rice
Mike Williams
Doug Baldwin (up and comer)
Golden Tate (decent as a #4)
Zach Miller at TE
Marshawn Lynch at RB.

They would be a good team with even a solid QB, over Jigaboo Jackson

Washington and Tampa both play in tough divsions too though. TB had a bunch of injuries last year, but they're ceiling is probably 7-8 wins from here on out. Still, better than Cleveland.

As far as Washington, I think this is the team that will trade the house to get RG3, unless they can land Peyton. Washington just flat out sucks. Every year they start off 3-1 or 4-2, then lose 7 of their next 8.

Goran Dragic
02-28-2012, 03:53 PM
Yeah, starting off 3-1 or 4-2 is a good enough start to end up with a better record than Cleveland.

Being a Big 12 QB is the coup de grace though, as they have a 100% NFL bust rate.

Well I see what you are saying but I hope you are wrong cuz I think our owner has his weee little heart set on him and has given the green light to trade whatever is necessary to get him in burgandy and gold next season.

I wouldn't mind Peyton, but that nerve that may or may not regenerate giving him back his arm strength is a major concern.

And yes, we think Hankerson can be a player if he can stay healthy and Davis got busted for toking along with our stud LT trent williams. they both got suspended the last four games of the year. They might franchise davis to give him a one year deal to make him prove his worth and his ability to stay clean. The one that may be on hgh is laron landry. he's pushing 254 and his arm is bigger than his head and he has a massive upper body. he's a fa, but his problem is he has a bad achilles and bone spurs too and refuses to get surgery so it's a problem thats not going to go away. he'll likely walk. i wish him luck. oh what could have been with him and sean taylor.....what could have been...

Irsay: Luck is not a lock for Colts:

"It's up in the air. We have to look at this thing completely open-minded. You have two outstanding athletes, two great pure passers, two guys from families that are incredible ... If we get to the point where we're going to negotiate early, get something done before the draft, you never rule that out. We've talked to both agents. We haven't negotiated yet.''

Listen Sambo, I'm not one for grammatical correction, but you keep fucking up the tense of this word..."that HAVE failed miserably." Don't type it like you speak it, type it correctly.

On to your point...Being athletic at the LB position is more important in today's NFL--combine it with smarts and you have a beast (Lewis, Willis, etc)...unless of course you're legally retarded like Lavar Arrington.

You can't develop the mental capacity of a player---either thay have it or they don't. Either you can grasp 500+ plays, audibles, and can read a defense, or you can't.

Maybe there's a reason we've only seen "13 Black Franchise QBs," ever think of that? There's been a shit-ton of them in college over the last 15 years, but the VAST majority can't hack it in the pros.

Is that racist, or just a fact?

Cam Newton shows promise, but let's see what he does now that teams have a year of game-film on him. Josh Freeman completely shit the bed after his one good year.

Michael Vick is an unreliable starting QB--he barely gets through 10 games a year b/c instead of staying in the pocket, the african in him takes over and starts running, resulting in injury.

Until Black QBs can win on a consistent basis--and win championships--then give me the white guy.

He had a better passer rating and less interceptions as well. He was all around better than Luck last season. There's a reason why he's rookie of the year over Luck. This season is still early so we'll see. Also Colts tanked that year with talent like Reggie Wayne but RG3 made a mediocre Redskins team relevent.

Option offense. One-read then take off and run. Easy to minimize interceptions. Luck didnt have the luxury of a 1400 yard rusher, so more picks are expected. Is Russell Wilson a better qb than luck too? Lol

Luck is a good one, but I like Wilson better. Wilson is clutch, he never gets rattled, and he seems to have a 6th sense for when he's about to get hit. The Seahawks would be no better than .500 without him. Luck will have a chance to show what he's made of now that Reggie Wayne went down.

to add, to to this, Wilson took over a 7-9 team that had made the playoffs and had even won a playoff game, and they improved by 4 wins. Luck got the Colts to a 9 game turnaround and into the playoffs. RG3 was there for a 5 game turnaround and got his team into the playoffs. Wilson took over the easiest situation of the 3. I have Luck>Wilson>Griffin out of those 3 rookies. Tannehill started off hot this year but they have one of the 3-5 worst offensive line situations in the league, so its been really hard to gauge him lately. The year before Wilson took over, they did not make the playoffs. That was two years before Russell. And, that playoff team of two years prior had one of the best quarterbacks in Seahawk history, a quarterback that took a team to the Super Bowl and that team still went 7-9 with a lot of the same players. So, to imply that they would've been two wins better is a stretch, especially with Matt Flynn projected to be the starter.

And in the same two year span for the Colts (10-11), they had a 10-6 season. That Colt team without Peyton still rushed for 1,400 yards and 7 TDs with their three headed system. I'm not saying Indi had a monster running game, or a great defense, but it's unfair to say a team that was below .500 since 2008 would all of a sudden be a .500 or above team.

Would he have started if he went to that other team instead of the Jets? They were begging for him.

Just because he didn't start for the Jets doesn't mean he didn't have the opportunity.

The Jaguars had a better offer than the Jets to acquire Tebow from the Broncos.

and yet they didnt even sign him as a free agent for the minimum. did they think his skills deteriorated that much in one year with no injuries?

Dunno the reason. Khan fought against his employees for Tebow last time, maybe he didn't want to do it again. Talk about a squandered opportunity I guess.

The question was who you start your franchise with...the implication being who is the better long-term prospect. This is obviously my opinion, but I think RG3 has higher upside and would risk taking him over Luck if he were to be the centerpiece of my franchise. I realize I'm in the minority...pun intended.

1/46, JT.

Sooo....with your ultimate knowledge and unmeasurable football intelligence, you can accurately pick who will and won't be good in the NFL before they even play a down...and insult people who don't have your incredible talents..God..we're so lucky to have the ability to be on the same forum with you...

When it comes to black QBs, it's an easy assumption to make. History supports my argument. Nothing supports your argument.

Btw, way to skirt the Big 12 point when it got thrown back in your face.

lol thinking the weak defensive conference you play in and gimmicky offense you run doesn't have an effect on your pro prospects.

Never said it hasn't in the past...just saying I think RG3 may be different. Say what you will...and I'll say what I will. I may be wrong..you may be. Truth is, neither of us have any idea. And you say nothing supports my argument, I could say the same about yours. Your basing one person because of his race on others...it's hilarious. One of the most racist things I've ever heard. But you keep fighting the good fight, sir...

Umm....I guess you don't pay attention. Where in my post did I talk about only race? I said you're basing one player off of others. That means race, conference, style..everything. Say what you want about RG3, but the facts are you have no fucking clue what's going to happen in his NFL career, just like I don't. I'm just saying I think he's got a shot.

Black or not, I just don't see what makes Griffin so much more special than other run first QB's in draft history other than the fact that he put up huge numbers in a gimmicky system

Except that he's not a run-first QB. He's a (very accurate) passer that can run.
