Rockets C Yao undergoes ankle surgery

June 17, 2005
HOUSTON (Ticker) - Yao Ming's left ankle should feel better for next season.

Yao, the Houston Rockets' All-Star center, underwent a successful arthroscopic procedure to remove a bone spur in his left ankle on Thursday night, the team announced Friday.

The 7-6 Yao, who posted career highs in points per game (18.3), field-goal percentage (55.3) and blocks (160) last season, is expected to begin rehabilitating his ankle in the coming weeks, the team said.

The first overall pick of the 2002 NBA draft, Yao has averaged 16.4 points and 8.5 rebounds in his career. He has been an All-Star in each of his three seasons with the Rockets, who lost in the first round of the playoffs to the Dallas Mavericks.
