Astros owner Crane mulling new team name, different uniforms (Read more: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2012/baseball/mlb/01/23/astros.changes.ap/index.html#ixzz1kWrWQiSm)

New Houston Astros owner Jim Crane is considering changing the name of the franchise as well as its uniforms.

Crane said Monday the team will conduct a study to decide whether or not to switch the name.

"We're going to study the information both from the fans and from all sorts of marketing people," Crane said. "I'm not saying we're going to change. We haven't made the decision yet whether we're going to change."

Astros makes sense in a city housing NASA; they must be really desperate to sell merchandise like the Bullets were when they changed their name.

It probably is about the merchandise. But the way I look at it, once the Astros go to the AL, what I appreciated about that team is effectively dead. A fresh start may not be the worst idea. Not to mention NASA's being dismantled and Houston's inability to even get a shuttle.

Colt .45's!
:lol You just know the new name is going to be awful, unfortunately.

If they do make that change they absolutely have to get Billy Dee Williams to throw out the first pitch.

They'll have to work overtime to think up something more lame than Texans, but I'm sure they've got it in them. The Houston Houstonians!

I hate them going to the AL, but I hate this idea even more. It's not like a name change is going to suddenly turn Houston into a baseball town. You'll get a nice one year surge in merchandising revenue and then it's back to apathy. Meanwhile, you kill part of the tradition that has kept the loyal fans with you for years.

What tradition will a name change kill?

If they do happen to change the name, I hope they go back the the Colt .45's. However, I'd prefer that they do not change names.

Would the name Houston Hurricanes be too soon for the katrina transplants

Jim Crane: “We will not change the name Astros.”

The idea of changing the Astros name was brought up last week, and that same idea put to rest on Monday.

A name change, owner Jim Crane said in a taped video message to season ticket holders, is not happening.

“You asked for change and we added several fan friendly initiatives last week and we hope you like them,” Crane said. “We will continue to listen, and to look for additional ways to improve on and off the field.

“One thing that we are not going to change is the name. We received strong feedback and consensus among season ticket holders and many fans, and we will not change the name Astros. The Houston Astros are here to stay.”

I wasn't too thrilled about a potential name change.
