As polls opened on Tuesday’s Republican primary in Joe Scarborough’s home state of Florida, the former congressman expressed his disgust with both candidates’ failure to address any issues of substance. The outcome of this pivotal primary will likely set the tone of the race for weeks to come, but Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney chose to spend their time -- as their super PACs spent millions of dollars on smear campaigns -- with negative ads and avoiding real voter concerns.
Floridians cited the economy, jobs, and housing foreclosures as their main concerns, issues that resonate across the country. Yet, instead of exploring solutions, Gingrich drilled Romney for vetoing funding for kosher meals while he was governor of Massachusetts, a transparent ploy to woo Florida’s substantial Jewish community.
Meanwhile across town, Romney stopped by a retirement community to engage in some good ol’ fashioned “MediScare,” implying that President Obama is a threat to Medicare and Social Security programs. Scarborough called the tactic “unspeakable.”
“The country is going bankrupt and Romney is trying to scare seniors,” he said. “That is the most shameful demagoguery I’ve seen on the campaign trail this year.”
Romney followed up his stump speech with a little surprise: singing "America the Beautiful."
rops for trying, Mitt, but you didn't perform like Barack Obama. The president recently sang a honey-sweet line of Al Green’s "Let’s Stay Together" at Harlem’s Apollo Theater. Now "American Idol" is calling and Al Green sales have spiked nearly 500 percent! Unfortunately, Romney's uninspired rendition won’t be having the same effect and likely won’t put a dent in his reputation as a rich, robotic white guy.
"Why does Mitt Romney close his campaign in Fla. by singing 'America the Beautiful' instead of telling us what he's going to do for America the beautiful?” Scarborough asked. “You can look through that entire speech and not find anything of substance.”
Republicans are already concerned the petty talking points and negative campaigning will have a lasting impact on whoever gets the nomination, by creating general distrust against politicians and potentially impeding their ability to get things done in office. Scarborough warned the candidates, “Americans aren’t stupid, they want substance,” he said. “Just tell us something you believe!”
