My recreational reading has really taken a nose drive the past few months; I've read a couple of good books on bereavement. I've been trying to help my dad deal with the sudden death of my mom in October----he's had a real hard time. But I was having this same conversation with a friend who is a heavy reader last week, and he said, "Oh man, you need to read something light and trashy next!" So on Saturday I opened up a box of history books he sent, and right on top, with a note that said "Read This First" was:

MannyIsGod
02-06-2012, 05:26 PM
I hate the physics book more, tbh. It pretty much skips 539843048 steps when deriving shit because it assumes you're just going to do it all in your head or just KNOW. The Calc book is fine, but mainly because I access it as an ebook and it has a bunch of supplemental video walkthroughs. Also, youtube is fairly amazing when you need help with any derivation as someone has put up a video walking you through the steps.

The good thing about the Calc book is that one book has gotten me through everything until DiffEQ.

The Reckoning
02-06-2012, 05:29 PM
yeah it's a pretty thick book and lasts a few semesters. i did it the hard way and tried to figure it all out from the book alone. didn't work so hot, especially since my prof was from russia and my TA from china...and i didnt take cal in high school (big mistake).

i do remember my girlfriend knew anything and everything about cal but when it came to physics, she was having nightmares. apparently, one day it just clicked for her though and she started making As instead of bombing every test. that's what i hear from most people taking physics.

MannyIsGod
02-06-2012, 05:35 PM
I would fail hard as hell if I tried to teach myself calc from the book. Physics and Calc account for a third of my class load but over 75% of the work load including time spent going to prof office hours/group study etc etc. I can pretty much never show up to a GIS, Env Sci, or Climate class and still make an A but if I miss one Physics/Calc lecture I feel I'm WAY behind. I do have good prof/instructors for each one (although my calc TA is from India he's actually pretty good at explaining things clearly) and I've made sure to stick with them each semester.

I admire people for whom this comes easily because its a lot of work for me to get it sometimes.

The Reckoning
02-06-2012, 05:40 PM
biggest problem for me in cal is that everything was explained through regular variables and then it assumes you automatically know how to apply it to trig.

one session my TA said "i know how to do the problem but i dont know how to explain it in english. ill get back to you in a week." only problem was that the homework was due the next day...that was the last time i went to a TA session :lol and i nearly gave up on cal all together.

i was taking other classes i enjoyed more like astronomy, economics and partying, so it was really hard to get pumped up about having to open the cal book and put so much time into it. i figured it out eventually though.

I'm on the last semester with that Calc book this summer. Its all vector shit so far that I could have used two semesters ago when I started Mechanics. Since I know this shit already, its been easy so far. I suppose that will change at some point.

All in all it got much easier after learning intergration methods (by parts, partial fractions etc etc).

Just got done reading that. Pretty good for a quick, light read.

It was interesting. The follow up short stories were kind of fun too. Drake and Weber are good at that kind of thing.

Baenebooks.com has another fascinating book, "1632", about what would happen if a small town in the US got plopped down in Germany during the Protestant Reformation. The ideas and ideals, both scientific and social/economic (i.e. democracy, and corporations) were interesting things to play with. He has a couple of sequels as well.

If you like military sci-fi, Drake is a good author, whose Hammers Slammers series from the 1980's were some of my introduction in to military science/tactics. Hammers Slammers was a high-tech mercenary unit of heavy futuristic armor.

Weber, for his part did a long-running successful series based on a young space navy officer, Honor Harrington, and her rise through the ranks. The first in that series is "On Basilisk Station", also free at http://www.baenebooks.com/c-1-free-library.aspx

Wonderful library of older sci-fi. Gives you the first in a lot of series for free, so you can see if you like it enough to spend money buying the follow ups to see what happens next.

I think you would get a kick out of the overall story arc of the Harrington series. Take that for what it is worth. It is one of the few sci-fi series where I will plunk down cash for new hardbacks. He does blather on a bit about technical stuff occasionally, but the overall storytelling more than compensates for this minor short-coming, IMO.

The expected publication date for book 3 is actually 2015. Not too bad. Though i wouldn't be surprised if it gets pushed back.

I just finished Daemon and it's sequel, Freedom by Daniel Suarez.
These are the first two books I've read from him. Kind of like Michale Crichton.
Starting on Influx which looks pretty good.

no...have not. thanks for the recommendation. I've been looking for something new to me. think I'll check him out. I saw Mystic River but it's been so long ago, I don't think it'll mess up my reading it.

I think you'd like this one. Good crime noir with a pretty unique storyline

Read Revival by King, enjoyed it but not sure how I felt about the ending. I guess I wanted it to relate to the Dark Tower too much. Also read Bruno's The Iceman, also good.

I watched the film "The Road"....then I read the novel. Now, I have hit the jackpot as I am listening to the unabridged audio book. I'm closing in on the end, and I will hate to see it come to a close. It's been a rare treat and advise anyone to partake of this title in this venue.

Currently listening to 'Escape from Camp 14', and it makes me wonder how many Koreans have to perish before the global community takes action. Off topic, when I was University student over a decade ago, a friend of mine came across a couple of exchange students from South Korea who asked him if he could 'tour' them around the campus. He asked them where they're from, and they told him they're from Korea. Not knowing any better, my friend asked them 'Which Korea? North or South? The other Korean guy fell silent and looked at my friend in utter disbelief. :lol

Check out Blood Meridian, I read the print but it would lend itself well to audio. Probably unfilmable though

No. It's garbage and a cobbling together of different parts of the book. It would have to be a mini-series in order to do it any manner of justice.

Just finished American Kingpin. I despise the cliche title of the book, but I find the entire Silk Road/Dread Pirate Roberts story fascinating. It was interesting seeing way more of the law enforcement side of things, and just how messy and disorganized it is.
