http://espn.go.com/new-york/nba/story/_/id/7572690/floyd-mayweather-says-new-york-knicks-jeremy-lin-spotlight-race-not-play
Boxer Floyd Mayweather believes that New York Knicks point guard Jeremy Lin is getting national attention because of his race, rather than his exceptional play.
"Jeremy Lin is a good player but all the hype is because he's Asian. Black players do what he does every night and don't get the same praise," Mayweather wrote on his Twitter account on Monday afternoon.
Lin's agent, Roger Montgomery, didn't immediately respond to a text message sent by ESPNNewYork.com. Leonard Ellerbe, Mayweather's top adviser, didn't return a phone call from The Associated Press.
Mayweather, however, responded to the story later Monday via a series of tweets.
"Its OK for ESPN to give their opinion but I say something and everyone questions Floyd Mayweather," the boxer tweeted. "I'm speaking my mind on behalf of other NBA players. They are programmed to be politically correct and will be penalized if they speak up.
"Other countries get to support/cheer their athletes and everything is fine. As soon as I support Black American athletes, I get criticized."
Lin has become the talk of the NBA -- and the sports world at large -- for his unprecedented play over the last five games.
Lin is the first player in league history to have at least 20 points and seven assists in each of his four career starts. The Harvard grad has scored 109 points in his first four career starts, which is the most by any player since the NBA and ABA merged in 1976. In his last five games -- all Knicks wins -- the 23-year-old is averaging 26.8 points and 8 assists.
Lin, an Asian American, is the first American-born player of Taiwanese or Chinese descent to play in the NBA. Lin's parents emigrated from Taiwan in the 1970s. A grandmother remained in mainland China.
Lin was an end-of-the-bench player for New York (13-15) for most of the season. The Knicks sent Lin to the D-League for one game in January and he played just 22 minutes in his first month with the team. In his first opportunity to play extended minutes, Lin scored 25 points and had seven assists in a win over the New Jersey Nets.
Lin has led the Knicks to a season-high five straight wins. He went undrafted out of Harvard and was released by the Golden State Warriors and Houston Rockets in the preseason before being claimed off of waivers by the Knicks.
Mayweather has drawn attention for racially insensitive remarks in the past. Mayweather went on a profanity-filled racist and homophobic rant against Manny Pacquiao in September 2010. In a video posted on UStream, Mayweather told Pacquiao, a Filipino, to "make some sushi rolls and cook some rice." He also said "we're going to cook him with some cats and dogs."

And the flip side is that if Jeremy Lin was black he might have gotten an opportunity way earlier.

True, to an extent. But also somewhat ignorant, because this isn't exactly new, for someone of a different nationality (than is the norm among that sport) to walk in and perform at a high level, such as Tiger in golf, and the Williams sisters in tennis. If a black guy came in and started dominating hockey, I'm sure there would he would get plenty of attention as well.

:lol Mayweather will get flamed for this, especially on this forum, of all places..
I disagree with the Black "victim" complex, but many people have acknowledged that the fact that Lin is an Asian guard plays into the hype factor..Mayweather is acting like this point hasn't been acknowledged, already..
Just like Tebow's success, as a QB that has trouble throwing and has an unconventional style, played heavily into his hype..Lin's Asian heritage plays a huge part in his hype, because it's something that we have never seem before..

Having a Black president and more opportunities than ever should eliminate the Black victim complex, tbh, but it won't..

Lin was the HS player of the year in California over guys such as Russell Westbrook, Quincy Pondexter, Chase Budinger, Taj Gibson and the Lopez brothers, yet wasn't recruited by any major D-I schools (UCLA and Stanford recruited him but didn't offer a scholarship). I have a hard time believing that woulda been the case if he was black.

Hold on a second,,,Hussein Obama wasn't black until after he won. Before that he was half white/half black.

There are plenty of situations where the black victim complex is warranted, but those situations rarely involve basketball.
White people do on plenty of occasion get tons of unwarranted praise, in particular when there's an athletic white draft prospect. Joe Alexander for example was hyped for having black athleticism but :crya white player's work ethic and intelligence:cry, then when he got to the NBA it became clear he was an unskilled monkey who happened to be white.
Birdman in 2009 when his hype was at an all time high got tons of praise for overcoming :crya fatherless, difficult childhood:cry that tons of black players are able to overcome without developing a crack addiction.

Meh, race is definitely a factor, but it's the last ingredient in the recipe. It's happening in a major market in a season that's short of compelling storylines. Throw in the fact that he's Asian and you elevate what would have been an overhyped story for a black or white player and you get a full blown circus. If the guy does this last year playing in Indiana it's a hiccup on the radar no matter what his background is.

Definitely some truth to it. But it's not the only reason for the hype. It's the combination of a bunch of things, like him going undrafted, being cut by two other NBA teams, going to an Ivy League school, and playing for the Knicks. It's not that black NBA players can't do what he's doing. But considering he went from borderline NBA player at the end of the bench to what he did in his first 5 games, 4 starts, put a black player in his shoes with all the same factors except for race, they'd be getting a lot of hype as well. But his race certainly adds to the hype.
Last I checked, Kobe gets praise every night. Even when he chucks up 30 shots.
Maybe Floyd should quit boxing and become NBA's spokeperson if he's so worried about the "other" players.

What a terribly racist thing to say. Are you trying to insinuate that white people are smarter and work harder than African-Americans?

Sounds like someone is jealous. Lin is Asian American. Barry Obama is bi-racial. Lin is getting hype because he went from a bench warmer to a starter and is putting up decent numbers. It has nothing do with color.

Jacob1983

Nothing, some uninformed poster mentioned that Obama is black when he is clearly half black and half white aka bi-racial.
Lin is the Tim Tebow of the NBA. However, you could say that maybe Lin is more talented than Tebow since some of his success was luck.

People would care, Lin would get a ton of publicity but nothing like he is getting now. The NYC factor only explain why this has turned into a circus like drama. If he played anywhere else in America he would still get hype.
