View Full Version : Rumor: Peyton Manning interested in playing for the Texans

FWIW. Not saying he is definitely interested, but it intrigues the mind.

As the calendar continues to move toward March 8, the date by which the Colts must either pay Peyton Manning (http://www.rotoworld.com/player/nfl/1493/peyton-manning) $28 million or cut him loose, reports and theories continue to emerge.

Here’s the latest, from Bob Allen of KTRK-TV in Houston: “Someone I know who is close friends with the Manning family says Peyton is definitely interested in possibly coming to the Texans (http://abclocal.go.com/ktrk/story?section=news/sports/pro/football&id=8542447). Peyton will be released by the Colts early next month and will be a free agent. The person who knows the Mannings says Peyton wants to play on a team that has a chance of going to a Super Bowl, and the Texans fit that description.”

Though the Texans have a quarterback, a healthy Peyton Manning would be a clear upgrade over Matt Schaub (http://www.rotoworld.com/player/nfl/16/matt-schaub). With that defense and that running game and those receivers, the Texans would be a championship-caliber team with Manning under center.

Before that would happen, Manning would have to be willing to put his Indianapolis legacy at risk, given that he’d be playing the Colts twice in 2012. And the Texans would have to be willing to sit Schaub down and/or send Schaub packing.

But the Texans are one of the few teams with which Manning could legitimately chase a Super Bowl in 2012. And if Peyton hopes to match Eli’s pair of Super Bowl titles, the Texans could give Peyton the best chance of getting it done in 2012.

Would be interesting to see how he does with Andre, Foster, and that defense. Although I think if the Texans had Schaub for the entire season, things might have turned out much differently. If I were the Texans, I would just roll with Schaub.

Manning should really target places like San Fransico, Baltimore, or NYJ. I think he could be the missing piece that could put all three right into the Super Bowl.

Problem is those teams are only a player here or there from a title so investing money into a guy who will probably start the season on the bench...is tough to envision

Niners have enough money to sign both Smith & Peyton but I rather have to lock up the best defense in football

Unless you have the 2001 ravens d or 2003 tampa d (niners dont), the 49ers arent winning a superbowl with a game managing qb.

I think the Jets make sense too for a couple reasons. Not only are they a good team who would have a chance to win a Superbowl with the addition of Manning, but he'd also be in the New York market with his brother, which would probably be an marketing dream. And he the only way he meets his brother in the playoffs is in the Superbowl. And beyond that, 2 games a year against Brady and the Patriots.

But Houston is probably a good situation for him too. Great defense (arguably top 3 defense in the league), a great run game, and Andre Johnson. And he goes back to the south closer to home. I think Houston makes sense on some levels too.

Agreed. No one is even sure if Manning will even be able to fully regain his pre-injury form. He would also have to change the offense to accommodate Manning as Kubiak's roll out WCO doesn't really fit Manning's style. There is also the fact that they would have to decide to sign him before even knowing if he can make it all the way back. Pretty big crapshoot for a team that had so much success last season with a third string QB.

No thanks.

The problem is no one knows where Schaub is with his injury now, or if he'll be ready by the start of the season. Imo, I think the injury will cause him to be even less mobile than he is already, with the playaction stuff and whatnot. Not sayin Peyton is mobile at all, but if the play's not there, just audible and hand it off to Foster. Schaub NEVER audibles.

Definitely, even Peyton at 60% is better than most QB's in the league. Sign Peyton to an incentive laden deal. Schaub is a good QB, but I just don't trust him with the game on the line. Trade Schaub for some picks, will fetch some good ones, and possibly draft Justin Blackmon.

Schaub is not guaranteed to be his old self either. At least with Peyton you have a higher upside, and a motivated Peyton with everything to prove. The roll out, Peyton won't have a problem with.

John Mcclain is easily the WORST sports writer, or allegedly beat writer with inside info in Houston. This is the same guy who said the Texans' wouldn't sign any significant free agents last summer and wouldn't have the money to do so. The team restructured alot of contracts and signed Manning and Joseph.

Neck injury/nerves in the throwing arm...ankle injury. One of these things is something different. There is also the fact that one is already on the roster and the other you are going to have to pay. What kind of money are they looking at? What will the Texans have to give up on the currently constructed roster in order to get him? You willing to let Mario and Chris Myers walk? No deal for Arian Foster? No extension for Duane Brown?

It's an awful lot of potential losses to take a flyer on a great player who might only be average after he fully heals...whenever that is.

I don't think acquiring Manning is the move Houston is going to make this offseason. They already have a solid starter in Matt Schaub and a up-n-comer in TJ Yates. I think if Schaub was healthy, they could have beaten the Ravens in their divisonal match-up. When Schaub is healthy he is actually a good quarterback. I'm not sure if gambling on Manning, who might not even be able to play, is worth the risk. Manning, at most, will prob have about 3 seasons left of play if he were able to.

Romo or Peyton Manning? Tough choice...

JMarkJohns
02-15-2012, 01:31 PM
Manning should look into the Cardinals. They finished 8-8 with a concussed and inexperienced Kolb and Skelton combination, losing 5/8 of their games by one score or fewer to some really good teams (Giants, Ravens, Bengals).

Cardinals will have Fitz, Well for a balanced offense, they have a young and aggressive defense and have proven their foundation is in place to be a QB away from legitimate contention.

Houston makes sense for Manning as well, as do the Jets. Teams like the Redskins, Dolphins, etc. don't for lack of talent and teams like the Niners have a solid option already in place.

I would take Peyton Manning, left-handed, over Tony Romo.

When you single-handedly bring your team back from a 24-point lead (in your 6th year as a starter, no less), sooner or later people are going to have to realize that it's never going to work out for you

DeadlyDynasty
02-15-2012, 03:11 PM
btw I think Romo is a good guy and has improved his game, but if you have a chance to team Peyton with weapons like Witten, Bryant, Austin, Robinson, Jones, and Murray--you don't pass on it. That offense would be disgusting and would mask bad defense like Brady was able to do this year.

um peyton manning would die playing behind the offensive line of the cowboys...brady would as well. Aaron Rodgers is probably the only person capable playing behind this shit line because he is mobile.

but what's the point of spending money on peyton manning when our defense continues to choke at the end of the year. QB is the least of the cowboys concerns.

Like dirk4 just said, have you not seen Indy's line over the years? Peyton's got a quick release and either him or Brady would win no less than 12 games every year with those Cowboys weapons.

It really is amazing to see the lengths some Cowboys fans go to defend Romo:lol It must be all those teary-eyed press conferences where he says shit like "we got a lot of heart in that locker room, and we'll fight back.:cry"

Another one of my favorite Cowboys company lines is "QB is the least of our concern." Do you really expect Jerry Jones to fix the defense (especially secondary) when he's shown absolutely no ability to do so?

Look what Brady, Rodgers, and Peyton do. They take bad defensive teams and turn them into contenders with their greatness. Romo can't do that and never fucking will, so if you have a chance to grab a GOAT QB, you do it.

Unless you want more of this, of course...

Not a huge Romo fan, tbh, though I know, just like DD has GOT to know that he is not our problem. Our problem is our secondary and O-Line, not to mention needing more than one pass rusher, but Peyton now has bone spurs where he had his surgery, and will more than likely need another surgery even if he DOES return. I think he's done, tbh. He'll probably try to make a comeback, and may even have a decent season, but I think, for his future, he should just retire.

It's also true that while Romo has plenty of issues, the QB position is the least of Dallas's problems. Outside of Ware, Lee, and Jenkins their defense is a mess. Their offensive line was also a question mark last year and their RBs suck. Wherever Peyton Manning goes, he's gonna expect to keep the massive salary he has in Indy. Dallas has too many problems to commit caps space to a QB with a career threatening neck injury when they have a solid QB already.

If you think adding a couple studs to the secondary is going to put you past the likes of GB, NO, NYG, etc, then you're severely disillusioned.:lol

December Romo troll came out three years ago...I was a lot more tolerant of Romo then. And I only got excited about the 9ers game because I finally thought he hit his stride where we might have a prayer. Had a hell of a game for a guy with a punctured lung and broken rib. I can be impressed by a player and not be a huge fan. If you call that a homer, that's fine..just get a better dictionary.

I said the same shit and you tried to put me on blast. Of course if Peyton is 100% he's better than Romo. 100% Peyton is the best QB in the NFL bar none. But he's not...so you don't spend money on a QB who will always have neck issues for the rest of his life, even after his playing days...especially when you have a decent QB and MANY other problems.

Not anymore. Elite The Eliminator Manning and his 2 rings/Superbowl MVP trophies say hello.

Correction..the Dallas Cowboys are mentally weak big-game chokers...not just Romo. And I guess I do defend him...but only from idiots who seem to think he's the only reason the Cowboys are losing, and we'll magically be fixed if we trade him. And it's not defending him necessarily...it's basically stating facts that it's the team that sucks..not just the QB.

?? That's a stupid response. How many starters have been there for all the years the Raiders have sucked? The Browns? The Bills? It's a team issue. When your team consistently loses, it gets stuck with you. Jerry Jones is a horrible GM/Drafter/Anything to do with football, and he's the one person we can't get rid of. That's the issue. Trading up in the draft to pick players we don't need, and trading out of the first round, when that's where you find the higher quality players. With him doing that, we'll never get the talent we need to get back to the winning we did in the '90s.

You're doing a great job of convincing me you're "not a fan of Romo.":lol

My original post was not about liking Romo..it was about saying I wouldn't want Peyton. He will never be the same...he hid a 4th surgery...he's probably going to need another surgery, and he will always have neck issues. It's not worth spending the money on a QB with a huge monkey on his back when he have other, much more important problems glaring at us if we have ever plan on making the playoffs anytime soon. Let's get back on track, shall we?

You don't know that...the season is a long way away. If he can't play then he can't play, but if he's given the green light then you sign him. The Cowboys would instantly be SB contenders at that point.

We all know what Tony Romo's ceiling is: great statistical years, december meltdowns, and 2-3 losses every year that leave you thinking "what the fuck did I just watch?" If you love mediocrity, then by all means keep chugging, but I thought Cowboys fans had higher goals than that.

They are higher than that...but you're not seeing the big picture, which is why I assume you're bolding the only parts you're wanting to respond to. We need a hell of a lot more than a QB. If we spend the money we'll need to spend to sign Peyton, our secondary will still suck, our Line will still suck, and we'll still have only one decent pass rusher. Peyton will not bring us a Super Bowl. Hell, Joe Fucking Montana in his prime wouldn't get us a Super Bowl right now. We have too much work to do, and if we get Peyton, we won't have the money to go after the people we're going to need to get to win. It's not about one player..it's about the whole unit. If you're asking me if I'd rather have a healthy Peyton Manning than a healthy Tony Romo, fuck yeah I would. But not for the money it's going to cost...we're in rebuild mode, not win now mode, unfortunately.

More excuses. A healthy (or quasi-healthy Peyton) makes you contenders RIGHT NOW, regardless of the D. That's what great QB's do. Look at the bad teams Peyton's dragged to 12-13 wins every year. Look at the dogshit Brady dragged to the SB this year. He had a great TE, a good beaner one, a white slot receiver, and 0 vertical threats or running game--and an atrocious defense. Rodgers weathered half his team on IR last year and won 15 games this year with the 32nd ranked defense and injuries to both starting OT's. Brees carries that team every year with a defense that gives up everything. Eli kept his team afloat this year through injury, and won in New England with guys like Ramses Barden catching passes.

Romo has a top 5 TE, 2 nasty starting WR's, a damn good 3WR in Robinson, and 2 good RB's. He also has the premier pass rusher on his defense, as well as good players like Ratliff and Lee. Not a good defense, but not GB-bad either.

What did the secondary have to do with 2 pick-sixes against the Lions (and a 3rd-pick that set-up the game winner)? What did the secondary have to do with fumbling at the Jet goal line when all you needed was a fg, then handing them the game when you throw it RIGHT AT THE BEST CB in football?

The defense cost them the 1st Giant game no doubt, but how do you miss a wide-open Miles Austin when he's 5-yards beyond the defender? He doesn't fuck up any one of those plays and chances are Cowboys make the playoffs.

Keep chugging, and by the time the Cowboys finally get all those pieces you want I'm sure Tony will cease to make bad decisions that cost his team games.:lol

I think if Romo dedicates himself and studies tape of Eli Manning (on and off the field) he can still save his legacy. Stop posturing in interviews, stop hamming it up at press conferences, and stop choking in big games.

Ugh....it wouldn't even matter, even if he hadn't made those mistakes in those games he would have made them somewhere else....he's just a QB who goes completely downhill after one minor fuckup. Getting Peyton would be huge for the Cowboys.

There's a reason Romo has won a grand total of one playoff game in 5 years of starting. The guy is a pure choker. I would compare him to Dirk but Dirk always got his team to the playoffs every year and performed when he got there. Romo can't even do that...

the only draw back for manning going to az is warner joined and they won they went to the superbowl if he does not get them their
OUCH

az record was bad at first because coaches were trying to much and they scaled back on the playcalling to more simple plays without training camp

Why did you even bother to edit?

One of the biggest differences between the two is what they do when they're under pressure in the pocket.

Eli always knows where his checkdown is and will flip it to him for 3-5 yards every time.

Romo will always try and singlehandedly evade the pressure by himself and get a big gain usually resulting in a sack/turnover but occasionally a huge play

It's the Brett Favre "gunslinger" mentality.
