From everything I've ever heard or read about him, Gary Carter was as great off the field as he was on it. He was, arguably, the piece that put the Mets of the mid-80's over the hump and into the World Series in 1986, and then was the guy who started the rally that made it possible for those maniacs to become champions.
I had the opportunity to meet him in a hotel in Philadelphia in the summer of 1988 and he was extremely gracious that day with everyone who asked for even a moment of his time.

RIP
I tend to think of him as a Met, but he's much more appropriately identified with some really, really good Expos teams of the late 70's and early 80's.

Very sad to hear. One of the greatest catchers of all time in my opinion. Just a few years older than me too... :(

Yup. Carter, Andre Dawson, Tim Raines, Ellis Valentine... those were some outstanding teams.
RIP Gary Carter.
