How is this news? They need to wait til he actually sets foot on the court again without rolling on it in a wheelchair before reporting again on this guy.

This was beyond sad years ago. It's amazing how the Blazers don't just cut their losses.

If it wasn't already clear, this confirms that Greg Oden was one of the worst draft picks of all time. Please don't say it looked good at the time. I saw both Oden and Kevin Durant play in college. It was obvious that Oden was injury-prone and that Durant would be a superstar.

The guy didn't even play a full season of college basketball. I saw him play in the NCAA tournament that year, and he played 10 minutes. He looked like an old NBA veteran as a freshman in college. Durant was playing CENTER for the Texas Longhorns, nailing three pointers and dishing out assists.

Yeah. One of the worst picks of all time, and whoever made or supported that decision was woefully misinformed or stupid. That's all there is to it.

Oden broke his wrist. Really hard to extrapolate that out to a bunch of career-ending knee injuries when he had never had one in HS nor college.

Agree whole heartedly ... when you chase size at the expense of talent shit like that happens. Durant is no MJ, but shit Oden is no Bowie either. Bowie at least made some significant contributions for parts of a few seasons. This shit if Durant continues (not even improves) at his pace will be worse than that.

Simmons is a moron (at times, pretty good writer others) but said he saw Oden limping, and it appeared that one leg was shorter than the other at the ESPYS the off-season BEFORE his rookie year. Saw Durant there too ...and he said Kevin walked with a swag that a top pick should have.

I too watched over 10 games of each guy in college and Oden was never impressive to me. He seemed like a bigger but much slower version of Alonzo ...tbh. I never knew he would fail like this ...but I thought the comparisons to David Robinson were laughable ...Durant just seemed like a a more athletic black version of Dirk.

How much money have they paid this guy exactly to go to the doctors office for 5 years?

SI said that it was just a second cleanout of cartilage, after the other one a month or so ago. He's already had microfracture on both knees.

IMO Oden could have been as good as Dwight if he stayed healthy.. big if though obviously.

Nah, the Blazers confirmed he had microfracture surgery again yesterday.

Oden was the talent when he was drafted; lots of revisionist history here on what kind of prospect he was.

I'm obviously a longhorn homer so I'll just regurgitate revisionist history to make myself look like I know what I'm talking about.

I never liked him. At least not over Durant. I also thought roy was very overrated as well. You can check the posts I made at the time of that draft I just was not a huge fan. I get the logic behind it, good big men are rare ..but you would think a franchise that was burnt by Bowie over MJ would go for the greater player and talent.

Durant did things (numbers wise) that freshman just don't do. Oden got a stacked Ohio state team further but to me was never impressive EXCEPT his size. What I saw from Oden compared to lets say Bynum ...was he was a better defender and definitely a better athlete than Bynum post knee surgery. But offensively he was less effective against undersized college guys than Bynum is against pros. In fact to me hibbert looks better on offense right now than Oden did. Now to be fair Greg was hurt in college (and in HS & pros) but he just never impressed me on offense. TO pass up a prospect like Durant I need to have what Oden gave on defense in college and at least what Hibbert gives on offense today ...

The only injury Oden ever had in HS was the wrist that kept him out of the first half of his freshman season at OSU.

My bad ... he damaged his hip ... BEFORE HS!

Courtesy CBS sports:

In sixth grade, Oden underwent surgery to repair his hip . Following the surgery, one leg was then longer than the other, resulting in his unusual gait which is often misstaken for a limp.

Not trying to fight with you Bum, just saying there were enough "flags" to make me go KD. Not saying Durant will be as good as MJ or even Kobe. But I KNEW (felt) Oden would NOT be as good as even Alonzo ...which to me was his ceiling ...a bigger version of Mourning with a less reliable jumper ...
