People who give Pop shit over throwing the Portland game obviously can't see the big picture.

The team had outperformed expectations on the RRT to that point and were obviously a couple of wins in the black. The players were tired, and winning away in Portland is very difficult, so Pop decided to rest his important guys and come back and try to win in Denver instead. At worst the team would've finished the RRT at an excellent 7-2 (the team probably predicted 6-3 as best case), so Pop felt he had the game to throw for the long-term good of his older players. And for all we know TP and Tim could be carrying niggling injuries that would benefit from a day off.

As for "the lead in the West", WGAF who's leading in the West at the half-way stage in the season? Totally meaningless when there's still 32 games to go.

Makes sense if you look at the big picture.

Check this quote out from last year. :rollin

"They feel they match up well with us. They chose to play us," Duncan said. "They got us. We'll see what happens."

We all saw what happened. A CONFIDENT, YOUNG team punked that ass. Punked it good too.

I didn't like Duncan making that quote because I felt he had no means to back it up. If it was the old Duncan that could have dropped 20 and 10 on them then I would have been fine.

I do see the big picture. I see that Pop is a pussy. His decision to rest his guys does not upset entirely. Pop goes further though. Pop decides to rest against good competition. He doesn't like watching his team lose against a good team.

Remember when Pop decided last year that he would throw 81, but play 82. Why not play 81, and rest 82? It was because 81 was against the Lakers and Pop didn't want his team to get psychologically beat down before heading into the playoffs. This is a pussy mentality.

Remember when Pop said that everyone was running away from the Lakers, as to not play them in the first round. That sounds like a pussy to me.

Unforuntely, other teams see the big picture as well. Hollins saw it last year and went entirely out of his way to punk the shit out of Pop.

Pop treats his players like children. It's quite insulting to treat a team of men so paternalistically.

So I guess in this instance there are two wrongs.

Fans insulting their team players by thinking their confidence will be destroyed by one loss.

Pop insulting his players by treating them in a paternalistic manner. I know coaches do this, but I've never seen a coach with the control Pop exhibits over his players.

Both are insulting. I think one is worse than the other. Yet, you defend Pop's nature in such a vigorous fashion. You must really love Pop.

No, Pop knows what his team needs over the long-term and doesn't focus on one game against Portland that he doesn't need to push his players into when they're tired from 7 games on the road.

Talking about resting players against the Fakers, did you ever think that maybe he did that so as not to show them any of what he was going to throw at them in the playoffs?

You're obviously one of those guys who thinks that the only way to confront a situation is to smash your head against it, and that anything else is "being a pussy". That's a caveman perspective. Try reading some Sun Tzu some time. A good manager uses circumstances to his advantage, doesn't let circumstance decide his actions.

Pop has masterfully managed the team so far this year - before the season, who would've thought we'd be 24-10 at the ASB without Manu for most of the year? Not I.

I'm still mad at Pop for resting Duncan in the last game of the regular in 2003 against the Mavs. Dallas won 93-72 and got the slight mental edge they needed.

http://www.basketball-reference.com/boxscores/200304160SAS.html

I'm still mad at Pop for resting Duncan and Ginobili against the Suns in the infamous Robert Sarver chicken flapping game back in 2005. The Suns won the game and obviously got the slight mental edge.

http://www.basketball-reference.com/boxscores/200503090PHO.html

I'm still mad at Pop for resting Duncan, Parker and Ginobili back in 2007 against the Nuggets. The Nuggets destroyed the Spurs 100-77 and got that damn slight mental edge.

That 2003 mavs game the spurs had already clinched the #1 seed in the playoffs so it hardly mattered.

The 2005 suns game Duncan and Ginobili we're both injured .. not sure how that is relevant to this discussion at all..

PHOENIX (AP) -- Despite getting a coveted win that kept the San Antonio Spurs from sweeping them this season, the Phoenix Suns aren't likely to get overconfident if the teams meet in the playoffs.

Amare Stoudemire scored 44 points to lead the Suns to a 107-101 victory against the Spurs, who were playing without injured All-Stars Tim Duncan (ankle) and Manu Ginobili (groin).

The 2007 nuggets game both teams rested their main 3+ players and also the playoff matchup was already set in stone.

All these past examples you gave us actually unwittingly support the opposing theory IMO, which is that Pop has gotten soft. Back in those championship years when he was actually a tough ass SOB coach he only rested guys when it was absolutely necessary or completely irrelevant in the standings or seedings to do so. Not so much nowadays. Sometime around 2008 (when coincidentally Bonner arrived) Pop turned soft, and his teams have followed suit ever since.

If Pop was successful in the past, in regards to resting players, why question when he does so present day? Unless you have a moronic, hate-filled agenda, surely you should be able to comprehend the reason why a coach would want to rest his 35 year old star with a chronically bad knee in a short, compressed, season? Not to mention the heavy minutes Duncan and Parker have been playing recently. Does it really take a genius to figure out that you want to give as much rest as possible to your older veteran stars, so you can have them fresh and energized for the playoffs? Tell me your hate for Pop is really the reason you come off like a douche on here and that you really do have some sort of sense.

Hey TDMVPDPOY looks like Pop still has no game plan for the rest of the season yet, and the team is still in d-league wanker mode. Should we start to worry yet or is this some CIA operation Pop has goin?

You know, I shouldn't question Pop's decisions, I'm sure he thought his coaching genius would be the great equalizer and his 3rd stringers would battle hard and maybe pull out a gutty win and he would look like some kind of genius coach. I'm sure he never imagine being totally humiliated and destroyed on national tv. Thought probably never crossed his mind. Oops.

Spurs don't even need all of the big 3 to play for a win. It may be close but I think we can pull it off. Assume Manu and Tim don't make the plane. Tony should play and focus on playing at a superstar level on both ends of the court in a sort of mental preparation for the playoffs - we could face Utah after all, but overall he needs a string of consistent games heading into playoffs if just for his own confidence. Stephen Jackson will take plenty of shots and continue making himself very comfortable around his new(ish sort of) teammates and coaching strategies. I expect Blair to have a big game just because he will come out fired up after playing so many games straight. Additionally, the usual dudes (Leonard, Green, Neal?, etc) undoubtedly have the potential for a strong follow up game after this last win.
