Congress Deals Major Blow to Wind Power Industry

The wind power industry is predicting massive layoffs and stalled or abandoned projects after a deal to renew a tax credit failed Thursday in Washington.

The move is expected to have major ramifications in states such as Illinois, where 13,892 megawatts of wind projects -- enough to power 3.3 million homes per year -- wait to be connected to the electric grid. Many of those projects will be abandoned or significantly delayed without federal subsidies.

The state is home to more than 150 companies that support the wind industry. At least 67 of those companies make turbines or components for wind farms. Chicago is the U.S. headquarters to more than a dozen major wind companies who wanted to take advantage of powerful Midwestern winds.

But the Repugs approve $10Bs of perennial tax expenditures for the oil/gas/coal cartels.

"Support for an extension to wind power's key federal tax incentive is both broad and growing. In just the past 24 hours, leaders as diverse as Rep. Steve King (R-IA), Governor Mary Fallin (R-OK) and Governor John Kitzhaber (D-OR) joined corporate icons like Nike, Campbell Soup, and Yahoo in calling for a speedy extension to wind power's critical federal tax incentive. Legislation extending the PTC now has 70 co-sponsors including 18 Republicans and four Republican members of the powerful Ways and Means committee. The broad base of support for wind energy positions us well to get the PTC extended at the next possible opportunity."

Branstad: Wind energy key to job creation

Gov. Terry Branstad said today that further growth in Iowa’s wind energy industry will figure heavily into meeting his job-creation goals over the next five years.

Branstad told attendees at the American Wind Energy Association’s wind power supply chain workshop that up to 5,000 Iowa jobs already are supported by manufacturing and wind power development businesses that operate in 56 of the state’s 99 counties.

“We cannot overlook the impact of the wind industry on economic development and jobs in Iowa,” said Branstad, who noted that he planned to discuss wind energy opportunities with Chinese officials during his upcoming 10-day trade mission to South Korea, China and Japan that begins Sunday.

Branstad told the gathering he supports congressional approval of a long-term extension of the wind energy production tax credit to give businesses looking to invest some stability and predictability. He also wants to lead regional transmission discussions aimed at finding ways to “pay for the very expensive cost” of transmission lines and facilities needed to move wind-generated electricity into the grid that serves the nation’s energy needs.

So how does this square with your tacit implication that Republicans don't support Job Creation and Infrastructure building?

Repugs want to kill federal incentives for wind power, thereby killing jobs from and the benefits of windpower. That wasn't too hard, was it?

Except for the article you linked and the one I linked clearly showed that as false.

That wasn't too hard, was it?

Boutons is a wonderful example of what's wrong with American politics.....he's certainly not the only one on this forum that demonstrates this, but he's without a doubt the best example from the 'left'.

Well, it seems to me that 3% per year for one wind farm is excessive. What is the combined total of all?

from Energy in America: Dead Birds Unintended Consequence of Wind Power Development (http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2011/08/16/energy-in-america-dead-birds-unintended-consequence-wind-power-development/):

California supports roughly 2,500 golden eagles. The state's largest wind farms kill, on average, more than 80 eagles per year. But the state is set to triple wind capacity in the coming years as it tries to become the first state in the nation to generate 33 percent of its electricity from clean energy sources by 2020.

That's just from one wind farm. What about the others?

It's funny. people like you want to talk about the fines BP gets for each endangered wildlife killed. If these wind farms were treated the same way, how much would they pay in fines?

NUMBER OF ANIMALS KILLED IN THE UNITED STATES BY CARS ANNUALLY: * 41 million squirrels * 26 million cats * 22 million rats * 19 million opossums * 15 million raccoons * 6 million dogs * 350,000 deer
NOT TO MENTION INSECTS AND BIRDS.
NUMBER OF BIRDS KILLED BY DOMESTIC CATS IN THE US ANNUALLY:
1 BILLION, AND THAT IS A CONSERVATIVE NUMBER.

You post this garbage, yet refineries coal plants unleash more carcinogens into the air that lead to more deaths of humans at orders of magnitudes higher.

Nice priorities.

According to some of you, especially the Pat Buchanan apologists.
