The Android team predicted forking in the ecosystem, Google chairman Eric Schmidt said today at Mobile World Congress, taking the opportunity to snipe at Apple over the company’s litigious tendencies. ”We understood that this stuff would happen …and it’s fine” Schmidt said, explaining that while Google hoped that those manufacturers not sticking to the search company’s official guidelines for Android would realize the potential benefits, ”We don’t sue them… if you get my drift.”

The Google chairman had been asked about the growth in Android devices, and whether that growth had been undermined in any way by the number of manufacturers using their own, customized builds of the OS. Not so, Schmidt insisted: that’s part of the open-source ethos, and something the Android team fully expected to happen.

Schmidt’s comments echo those he made in mid-January, in which he suggested there was no such thing as fragmentation, only differentiation. At the time he suggested that “differentiation is positive, fragmentation is negative.”

ok. i've got a week or so of hands-on ICS usage. i'm liking it a bit more. didn't like the updated stock browser but i got ICS+ like someone suggested on here and that works way better for me. one thing i don't like is my phone idles at around 400mb of RAM when it was usually 280mb on gingerbread. i like how you can now disable services and i freed up some RAM but it's still a little laggy. ah well.

I can't imagine Jelly Bean being a huge improvement over ICS like ICS was over Gingerbread.

Also, I have trouble moving the screen in the Web browser.

Like if I move straight left or right, I can't continue moving up/down/diagonally, and vice versa. If that makes sense.
I have to stop touching the screen, then swipe up/down

Makes reading stuff like message boards unnecessarily annoying, I can't just move the page any which way with one swipe.

The samsung implementation of ICS was pretty much (not to say totally) buggy on my SGS2.

So, I rooted it and switched to the Resurrection Remix ICS Pro Rom (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1436854) (Aroma installer with multiple kernel provided such as Siyah and Fluxi, AOKP, no more Touchwiz, what could I ask for more)...

In what way? Like bricking it? It's really hard to brick it, tbh. Like jailbreaking.

I left Apple (iPhone 4) for the HTC One X on AT&T and have had a blast with this phone. I'm not too technical, so the only things that matters to me is the speed in which the browser works and how the text module works and how well I can upload music to it. All 3 important factors are pretty good with this phone. The one thing I do not like is the fact that the battery life is kinda sucky. Other than that, I don't really have no issues with leaving Apple.

Would trying to root my phone be a risky proposition for someone who doesn't really understand what it means to do such a thing? I used to jailbreak and unlock my iPhones, but I always would then return to the normal settings. Is rooting easier than jailbreaking. Maybe I should use the internetz to learn more about this stuff.

sinok
07-17-2012, 01:19 PM
Yeah but isn't out risky to root it?

Well, you still can unroot it later if needed.
Lots of people have been doing it without problems...

Though, there still is a really small possibility of breaking the phone, but I've rooted two times already, unrooted it once to try again the standard Samsung rom.

Not quite hard to do if you're a bit tech savvy.

Root using the CF-Root method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
Do a nand backup in recovery mode (start the phone with home button+volume down button+Power button at the same time select backup and restore and do a full backup, you will need to have some space on your sdcard)
download the rom and flash it (follow the instructions on the resurrection remix page)
Restore the data part of the nand backup. Wipe cache & dalvik cache, fix permissions and done.

I have recently switched from the iPhone 4 to the HTC One S

Super shit

However the battery life on my One S is not really different from the iPhone 4

I guess it has something to do with the novelty; the first few days you use it a lot to experiment, which drains the battery faster, but after a few days you will use it normally, sparing the battery life

It's important with Sammy phones to do a complete backup prior to updating. Backup, factory reset, update, factory reset, then restore apps and settings.

I had to do this with my Note. The update was flawless.
I've read that a factory reset will clear up the lag issues.

Ok. I've got a new issue with my skyrocket. I did the update through att/kies. Now when I go to my music player(stock. Any other suggestions would be appreciated) it duplicates the tunes and one does not play at all. I have to manual skip the file that doesn't play. I unmouted then mounted my SD card but that corrected it so long. Thoughts?

Also, editing text is screwy. The blinking cursor is there, I edit the word I put it on then you see the word previous or after it being edited. Very frustrating.

I am unsure what you mean by the first portion: are you saying that it has two files for every song? One being the actual song which plays and the other being some sort of empty container file? I don't know the answer to your question either way (I have not had this issue), but I was just trying to clairify in case someone else has an answer.

As far as the text part, try a different keyboard (not trying to get you to switch if you are otherwise happy, just trying to isolate if the problem is indeed the keyboard, or something deeper).

To your first part, yes. Track listing is: Song 1. Song 1. Song 2. Song 2, etc.

iirc, it's happened with both keyboards i've tried. Currently happening with swype ND I believe it did it with the stock one.

That sucks, I am sorry to hear that since I am using a completely unofficial ICS port on my Evo 3d (there is no official ICS yet, and no source code) and it is substantially smoother than gingerbread. Maybe contact ATT about it. I am not sure what they can do, but if there are enough complaints, maybe something happens.

edit: my only other advice would, of course, be to root it and use a custom ROM, but I am not up on the various roms for the s2.

it may work, but you still wont benefit from the full capabilities of an android device, until its rooted and modded. EVER.

What's the difference between a mod and a launcher

A launcher is basically like a GUI. It is the main overlay of your phone when launching apps, viewing your home page, widgets, etc...

A mod is basically a modified version of your operating system (Android). Many people make mods that get rid of all the pre-loaded useless software and apps that AT&T and other carriers load the phones with, that ultimately ends up hogging memory, disk space, and clutters up the phone.

What kind of phone do you have?

http://www.engadget.com/2012/07/27/htc-one-x-might-drop-to-100-on-contract-at-att/

HTC might have turned green having seen the Galaxy S III steal the Android spotlight at AT&T, but it could be poised to use a classic trick to get the One X front and center once again: a price drop. An AT&T staff leak at XDA-Developers suggests the carrier is cutting the One X contract price in half to $100 on July 29th, putting it well under its Samsung rival and giving the similarly-priced Atrix HD no small amount of heat. Nothing's confirmed unless AT&T pulls the trigger, of course. If it does, we could see at least some shoppers deciding that HTC just makes more Sense (4.0) in the end.
