I'll likely be buying an ultrabook this summer since they are what I've been wanting for a long time: Faster windows versions of the macbook air.

I've considered switching to a dumbphone/cheap contract and getting a network supported tablet device. But I don't know. It seems like a tablet offers little that a phone doesn't. It's still nothing compared to a desktop/proper laptop. It offers marginally better websurfing than a phone, esp. since phones are now Quad Core as well.

I think I'll stay with my phone for now. Hopefully the Samsung Galaxy 3 is released soon.

Slightly more, actually, from what I can tell. But $999 for the base model isn't horrible if you're a PC purist.

Haven't yet decided if a laptop is going to be what I want when I'm done with school (desktop and tablet just seems like a more practical pair), but I keep thinking that if I get a new laptop I should do it before Windows 8 is all that's available, and that XPS 13 is looking pretty sexy.

Ok, so I just read that the Ipad is the first tablet to have Bluetooth 4.0. This is pretty cool, because I have been using the same batteries in my touchpad keyboard for 8 months now and they are going strong.. this is with BT 3.0. From what I am reading, 4.0 will allow you to use the same batteries for years.

I see tablets evolving into something else before they really arrive as the next generation of computers. Touch screen interaction with a device that you have to cradle with one hand or squeeze between your thumbs is horribly inefficient. They need a much less awkward way to input data and as it stands I don't see much happening there for a while.

Why would they need to replace computers (desktop)?

To me, they're a very different segment of the market.

There's also no reason you couldn't dock a tablet... you can already do it with almost all of them, including the iPad...

I'm just going by what Steve Jobs (RIP) and company have stated, that the iPad is the next generation in the evolution of computers.

But my statement also stands for portable computing. These devices have the potential to replace laptops entirely, but they aren't close yet. With a better way of interacting with them, that would change.

Eh, I'm talking about right now. You can use a keyboard with them if you want. Touch is arguably superior to a mouse (direct access + gestures).

I would not do that. Get a nice smartphone and the network with it. You will carry your phone outside the house 10 times more than you would with the tablet.

The software is the exact same as on the other iPads - so you're not getting anything really extra in terms of productivity (I don't consider adding 4G over a year late innovative). This is not limited to Apple of course, but I just find it absurd hearing friends saying they're gonna upgrade from the iPad 2 to this.

iOS 6 is being announced in a few months, I do not doubt it has some new features that the new iPad hardware can take advantage of. We'll see. I would say it's more of an upgrade from the first iPad to the second.
