since I'm black I feel like I have to leave a good tip EVERYTIME, to prove I'm not poor/cheap/a Luck_The_Fakers_Luck_The_Fakers_Luck_The_Fakers_Lu ck_The_Fakers_Luck_The_Fakers_Luck_The_Fakers_, etc. Also so that any black person the waiter or waitress serves after me gets A-1 customer service.

now if the service is bad, I'll leave a horrible tip but I rarely run into that problem.

I'll usually tip 25% if the service is reasonable. And a minimum tip of $5 if the bill is really low. For buffets, I'll tip $2.

I don't know, if I had to guess its because we feel like "the man" still owes us so we'll tip the waiter if he/she is black but non blacks don't get shit.

I tip usually 20% starting point. Everyone I know goes by 15% still (or was it ever 15%?).

15% is the classical minimum tip. If you got a hot girl behind the bar, tip her 15% (unless she happens to be legitimately good), because every other clown doting over her will tip 25% at least. Bare minimum for them...it's petty, yes--but strangely empowering...and if you're not an asshole (just business-like) about it, most of those dimes won't take it the wrong way and will actually work harder and try to chat you up next time.

I mean the ones where a waitress will bring your drinks and refill them.

I saw a fine ass female bartender but most of the bartenders in S.A are mexican or white and don't fuck with niccas like that, so I don't tip them well at all. The most they get is an extra dollar.

Do waiters\tress know they are being tipped by credit card? I feel weird doing this because when i get up to pay the bill at the counter, I don't leave cash tips. I always get that feeling that the waiter thinks I'm a cheap ass when she's bussing our table and looking for the cash.

In most even remotely respectable places you pay the bill at the table, so they already know whether it's cash or credit. If you get that feeling a lot then stop taking the Mrs to IHOP.

20% is easy to calculate so I usually roll with that. Someone has to mess up pretty bad for me to be annoyed enough to actually want to do the math to express my proportional displeasure with their service. I've only stiffed someone on a tip twice (one delivery guy, one waitress) and in both cases when I recounted the stories to friends they said it was the sort of stuff they'd demand to talk to a manager and get someone fired over. So I'm a pretty lenient guy I guess.

What I fucking hate is now it seems like every fucking receipt from anywhere has a place to put a tip. I was going through a drive-through and there was a place on the receipt for a tip.

I can relate to this. For the most part I don't refuse to tip unless the service was HORRIBLE. Even if I have to remind him to refresh my sweet tea I'll still leave something behind.

I get irritated at places that don't have a spot for tips on the slip, like Amy's Ice Cream. I don't carry much, if any cash. I agree with 20% as a starting point, and often tip 30-40%. I also get a lot of comped shit, and if I do, I tip about 40% from the non-comped amount.

Take-out and bars: 20%
Dine in: 25%
Places where I'm a regular or if my go-to bartender draws a clover leaf into the head of my Guiness: 33%-50%

This is true, lol. Went to Hooters to watch the SB this year, and the bartender was fine as fuck. You could see all the fat middle aged dudes were trying to talk her up, while I just enjoying the game and my beers. She started chatting with me 1/2 through the game ended up giving me all this free Budweiser shit (t-shirts, mugs, etc.). Couldn't be stingy with tip at that point, probably gave her 35%.

dine in and bars I tip way different. dine in, just get my shit right and don't forget about me and you're getting at least 25%, probably more if I can afford it. I know you don't make shit outside of tips and work hard for that, and the job usually isn't exactly easy anyway.

Bartenders are different. I usually go out on a date or with friends and so we're there to have a good time - so I'm expecting smiles, jokes and quick service and now I forget you even exist til next round. A good bartender will get plenty of tips if the place is busy, don't expect me to go too far out of my way pay-wise unless you're really hooking up shots or we're buddies and it's slow or something.

I don't do tip jars unless I am sitting at the bar. Fuck putting money in a jar at a deli, that's just fucking stupid. It's not like I can make my own sub. Want a tip, OK, I will sit at the table, you come take my order, bring me that shit, refill my fucking drink. Otherwise, fuck you!!

Usually about 18-25% depending on the service. I'll pretty much never go below 18% even if it's shitty service.
