Thought this would be a good counter to the EV post.
Debbie-Downers, pile on!

Use the railguns to seize the French dairy industry. Problem solved.

The projectile they use is interesting; I wonder if they intend to eventually use more conventional cone-shaped rounds with rifled barrels (or some type of barrel to make the round spin anyway). If you're going to accurately launch a projectile 100 miles, it's going to have to be more stable in flight than that thing looks to be.

A railgun is worth starving. Now that Arnold Schwarzenegger movie will become a reality.

. In April, General Atomics will supply its own prototype so the military can identify which one is closer to making its way aboard the battleships of the 2020's

Battleships, shmattleships.

Put one of those suckers on an orbiting satellite with an iron payload the size of a city block.

You don't even need to propel it very fast, just drop it.

Who needs nukes, when you can drop a city block-sized rock anywhere on the globe?

Don't think the Chinese won't try it. Sneaky fuckers already have waaay more nukes than we thought they did.

hypersonic = 3500+ miles per hour. Call it 3600 to make it even.

Time to travel 100 miles = 100 seconds.

Not a lot of time to deviate from the massive inertia one imparts to the projectile.

The laws of physics would dictate that it will go where you aim it, simply because there isn't enough time for anything to go wrong. :)

Who wants to bet that this thread is a many orders of magnitude more popular than the EV one which, intellectually I find FAR FAR more interesting and would like to talk about it a lot. However, viscerally, this is FREAKIN COOL!

I loved this comment:

That's a really oddly shaped projectile. But then I guess you can use anything for ammo in this baby. If you run low you could always load it up with a hundred cans of Spam.

Spaceforce good when Obama was POTUS

This one genuinely left me puzzled.

I have said from the start, and repeatedly that I think the idea of a space command was one of the few things Trump has done that I support.

Hell, in the "super duper" missile thread I even said it again.

This appears to be an attempt to say "RG is a hypocrite, here he is supporting a spaceforce when Obama was president, but doesn't support it when Trump does it"

One of the few things I think Trump is getting right.

Trump does a few things that I support.

Space Force.
NASA funding moon/mars missions
Hard line on China

If he keeps listening to the experts... I will support that.

You failed here at what it seems you were trying to do.

[amusement]

Tried so hard... searched for the wrong things, and failed to do some basic work. :lol

So much emotional effort spent trying to show me up. It's a bit tragicomic.

Fizzle goes the funding. Hang up: A universal hardpoint mount design that would allow the transition from "it works on a range" to "here it is on a ship"

https://taskandpurpose.com/military-tech/navy-electromagnetic-railgun-funding

This is the kind of tech we need, IMO.

China appears to have sea trials already for their version, leap-frogging US in getting actually on a ship.
