View Full Version : Build a Team
Let's say you're building a team and you get 2 superstars for free. Then you get to pick 10 role players to fill out the team....any 10 you want. Who would you pick? (2 per position) Explanation of why you picked each team is optional but if you choose to give one, it must be in proper essay format with 1 inch margins
PG-Chauncey Billups, Jarrett Jack
SG-Jason Terry, JR Smith
SF-Trevor Ariza, Matt Barnes
PF-Anderson Varejao, Udonis Haslem
C-Demarcus Cousins, Gustavo Ayon
Goran Dragic

If you are planning to choose Wade, choose Rondo instead because he's more of a winner.

PG: Mario Chalmers/ Goran Dragic
You get a nice duo here. Chalmers doesn't pass that good but plays great D and Dragic is one of those threats to explode.
SG: Aaron Afflalo/ Jaamal Crawford
Once again great defense from one guy, and explosivness from another.
SF:Nicholas Batum/ Shane Battier
Good smart dudes, can't ask for much more.
PF:Taj Gibson/Ryan Anderson.
Another great D/O combo
C:Omer Asik/ Ben Wallace
Solid 12 fouls a game
PG Luke Ridnour, Chauncey Billups (if you put him here, I can take it)
SG Tony Allen, Lou Williams
SF Nicolas Batum, Paul George
PF Taj Gibson, Ryan Anderson
C Marcin Gortat, Serge Ibaka
Latarian Milton

:lol at first I lol'ed but that would actually be a solid team. Nuggets-Nene+2 superstars
For me, if I was a GM, my ideal team would be 2 superstars, 3-4 good shooters, and the rest of the team would be guys who are dirty/annoying/and play solid defense. My big men have to be able to not shit their pants when they have the ball in their hand as well. Atleast be able to finish around the basket

How do you define role player? Steph Curry is generally considered an up and coming star, so does he fit? What about a high dollar guy like Josh Smith who isn't an allstar? I guess with the current standards of this thread, my team would be
PG: Steph Curry
SG: Eric Gordon
SF: LeBron James
PF: Nene
C: Dwight Howard
6 Josh Smith
7 James Harden
8 Serge Ibaka
9 Darren Collison
10 Roy Hibbert
11 Nicolas Batum
12 Anderson Varejao
Goran Dragic

If it's a 1 season thing, my 2 stars are Kobe and Dwight
PG - Curry (if he's a role player), Goran Dragic
SG - Kobe, Harden, Afflalo
SF - Deng, Thaddeus Young
PF - Ibaka, Odom
C - Dwight, Tyson, Gortat
How can you name Curry, Nene, Hibbert and Josh Smith a role player ?

Just going by the standard set in this thread once people started naming guys like Curry, Deng, Noah, etc.
we need to generate a list of agreed upon franchise players first tbh

I kind of interpreted the OP as suggesting anyone who isn't considered a "superstar" is available as a role player. I don't consider any of those 4 guys mentioned as "superstars."

Under that reasoning:

Ginobili/Allen
Deng/Wallace
P.Gasol/Smith
M.Gasol/Kaman

Because there arent many superstars in this league. Those 4 are faces of their franchises, best scoreres, well paid.
So I can take Team like
Parker/Rondo/Billups
Ray Allen/Joe Johnson
Loul Deng/Josh Smith/Andre Iguoudala
Pau Gasol/Zach Randoplh
Roy Hibbert/Andrew Bynum
Those are role players for you ? They arent superstars, for sure.

I'll meet you part way as you make a very fair point.
I'd consider Rondo, Deng, Josh Smith, Parker, Billups, and Hibbert role players. Parker and Billups were tough calls but I consider them more complementary players than franchise players. I kind of consider Iguodala a role player except he became the face of the Sixers after Iverson was traded. Bynum and Randolph are kind of on the fence for me. I'd lean towards not role players for both, but I wouldn't put up much of a debate against either being considered role players.
For me, when I chose my roster, I didn't take any "superstars," and I didn't really target guys who are "faces of their franchises" where they are either max or close to max players or the obvious go-to guy on the team. Guys like Ray Allen and Pau Gasol at one point in their careers were viewed as franchise players.

Gasol and Allen are the only two there that I'd understand not being called role players. The rest I'm good with being labeled as role players.

well now I'm lost... I thought it was an established fact on ST that Kobe is a role player and Gasol is the super star of the Lakers
How do you define role player? Steph Curry is generally considered an up and coming star, so does he fit?
tbh I don't really care just don't list all stars or guys that have a decent shot at making it (Danny Granger, Pierce, etc.) In your case I don't think Steph Curry is even close to making the team so he'd fit. I'm more curious to see what kind of team people would build
