View Full Version : Injury Thread: TJ Ford Hurt vs. Knicks

Baron Davis slams into TJ Ford's back and then Tiago Splitter appeared to step on his neck, although it looks like it was the hit from Davis that hurt Ford. Ford was down for a while and then had to be helped off the court; he could hardly walk :(
With Ford's history of neck issues, that was horrible to see. At this point, after this many scares, I'm hoping that Ford gives up the game before he sustains any long-term damage. He's too good of a guy to ruin his life because of a game.

Well, I feared this when we signed him. His history of kneck injuries has reared its ugly head. I hope he is OK (to continue life normally), but id guess we need a backup PG now. What are your thoughts? Can we roll with no other real PG on the team (Joseph sucks), or do we trade and who for?

Hope he's okay.
Really am surprised at how he's played/acted this year. Very professional and was a decent back-up. Wish him well.
Edit: Well this little bit of wishful thinking got shot to hell.
It looked like Davis' hit him with a forearm in the back, just around the bottom of the ribcage. That's the right area for a kidney shot. I'm still hopeful from the way he was moving around that it's not the spine.

I posted this in the game thread, but since this is going to get a lot of questions from people not watching, I'll post it here:
I couldn't tell how low on the back TJ got hit. That could have been a kidney shot. That's a fucking paralyzing blow if you get hit hard. He was kicking his legs, and moving his arms. He may be in the locker peeing blood right about now. I hate to say it, but I hope so. He'll come back soon enough from that.

Yeah, anything but a neck/spine injury would be good thing.

that was stupid and uncalled for. I under the knicks wanting to be physical but that was not very smart on davis part.

I hope your right GSH, another spinal issue and its likely time to hang up the sneakers. This goes back to his days in Austin, for sure, maybe further back. Damn, he's a top notch backup and good guy.

TJ Ford suffered stinger and will not return tonight. Per Spurs, preliminary exam shows no neurological damage.

His refusal to get in the wheel chair was nice. By "stinger" I think they might mean he is pissing blood and it stings, lol.

All of TJ Ford's injuries have been classified as "stingers" so I wouldn't necessarily call it good news. In fact, it's probably bad news.

Encouraging words from everyone reporting atm.
People say "just a stinger". I know guys shake them off, but it's something you really should pay attention to. It's nerver trauma, plain and simple. With TJ's history, it's a big deal.

In the past, he's missed several weeks at a time with "stingers" but hopefully this one is more minor.

Feb 4, 2008 – T.J. Ford returned to the Raptors' lineup Monday night after missing 24 games with a left arm stinger.
May 1, 2007 - Breaking News: TJ Ford Admitted to Hospital with "Stinger"
Even the Horford incident was classified by some as a "stinger".
It's good news that Ford is able to walk but as far as playing basketball again, a "stinger" isn't the diagnosis we wanted to hear.

If it was a serious injury to his neck, he would've (or should've) been put in a collar. That hit he took reminds me of getting rearended in an auto wreck. Could have been "whiplash"/hyperextension of his neck in addition to a shot to his lowerback/kidney.
In the past, he's missed several weeks at a time with "stingers" but hopefully this one is more minor.
I've seen guys with serious pain and arm weakness for a couple of weeks after getting a stinger. When an athlete starts getting repeated stingers, the docs start suggesting that they quit whatever they are doing. I think some people are prone to them because of the way they are put together. And we know that TJ has had more than his share of problems in that area.
Regardless of whether TJ returns, it will have an effect on the way the organization looks at his future. Can't help it.

Dude, I think that just means he's not paralyzed.
That said, wouldn't be surprised to see him back next game. :flag:

TJ Ford has a spinal problem that presaged his playing basketball. Thats why when Mark Madsen made that stupid foul on him, he got a spinal injury that sidelined him for a season in the mid 2000s. He still carries that spinal problem and is therefore susceptible to a serious one when the spine/neck is involved. Kudos to his spirit for continuing to play bravely despite the risk.

This sucks. I really like this guy. He has a great demeanor, excellent work ethic, and is a team-friendly guy. Of course a characteristically opposite player had to make the cheap shot on him. Wouldn't be surprised if that was part of the reason Pop was still pissed after half-time. Baron Davis almost pulled the same stunt on Splitter. Dirtbag.
Hope Ford gets well soon...

I was at the game. TJ went back to the bench in the 2nd half, and he wasn't even in street clothes, and was joking around with Dejuan Blair and high fiving teammates from what I saw. He looked to be in good spirits.

8/10 a stinger is nothing serious. I've seen a simple stinger end a guy's career though and everything looked fine at first so you never know. I hope for TJ's and our sake that its the former.

A nice guy with talent but I put him in the same boat with Fabricio. Too much of a risk of a catastrophic accident on the court. Id put Neal ahead of him and I wouldnt care if he quietly disappeared after the season.

What's scary is that it was only a little hit. I'm not a doctor so I don't know how risky it's for TJ to continue playing but he should consider retirement. He is a dad and there are more important things that basketball in life. After the career he had, money shouldn't be a concern for him.
Even without Ford, Spurs should be fine with the Neal/Ginobili backcourt. They can even add a vet PG through free agency or with a little trade.

YESSIR.
TJ showed a lot of heart. I hope he can play for us because in the limited time he has had he has proved to be a real asset. I want him to make those of y'all who doubted his signing to eat some more crow. I was happy when we got him but its been disappointing to see his season be derailed. Lets hope its not over.

TJ needs to retire. I hate to say it, but hes too nice of a guy to actually suffer serious life-long damage. I wouldn't wish that on anybody, but especially not TJ Ford.

I thought Ford should retire after the Al Horford incident. This time might have been even worse in that a physical yet routine play left him unable to walk on his own.
For his own safety, Ford should retire. The Spurs would be better if he decides to keep playing but he really is playing with fire.

That was the scariest part. They kept showing the replay over and over trying to act as if it was some big awful play when it really was not. TJ is a little guy with too high of a risk. I can't watch it keep happening to him.

why doesnt he just play with a neck brace?? playing with a neck brace is still better then having CJ running one direction only into players...

I agree. He definitely got hit, but it doesn't look like he really got hit THAT hard. He just took the shot right at the worst possible spot. Hes more fragile than even he probably realizes.

I thought the move by baron Davis was pretty benign. The way Ford reacted from such a routine play suggests a future injury is practically inevitable. it was scary watching him go down like that, and I don't want to see him suffer something that could seriously debilitate out injure him.
He should retire. Tough for me to say that, cuz I was so ecstatic to get my longhorn hero on the spurs, but I believe it needs to be done

I have to admit that in the back of my mind every time I was watching TJ play earlier this season it seemed like an injury waiting to happen. I don't mean that in a bad way. I love the energy and when he got into a rhythym he was the best backup PG the Spurs have had in years.
Not sure who's out there the Spurs could bring in. Or just go with the Neal/Ginobili/etc. backup PG approach and TJ is the 3rd string PG in any case. Play him as little as possible. It's just not worth him getting injured again.
Cory Joseph is not ready for prime time.
