Houston has continued to aggressively probe the Lakers on a potential Pau Gasol trade, but there's no deal close, league sources tell Y!

Or maybe not, yet. Who to believe..

I still don't get why the Lakers are shopping Pau. Even if he isn't beasting like years prior, the Pau / Bynum combo creates a size mismatch for nearly every team in the league.

The only way this isn't, at best, a lateral move is if they are getting a bigman more skilled than Pau, and those aren't real abundant in the league right now. Even Howard (which isn't happening) doesn't have the same floor game and passing skills that Pau has...he fills the same space as Bynum.

I said "even Howard", which indicates that he would be an exception to the previous statement.

Howard would be an improvement, but I personnally don't think vastly so. Pau has a much more diverse floor game than Howard; he makes his teammates better and actually has a jumper. Howard is a handful in the post....but Lakers already have one of those.

Dwight Howard is a MASSIVE upgrade over any big. Dude single-handedly beat Chicago last night at the UC, and took a team of 3-point chuckers to the finals a couple years ago.

He's still unpolished, but that's what's scary. He's a potential 30-20-5(blocks) on any night

Gasol is a damn good player, but he doesn't fit into Brown's "offense". Might as well move him if you have no use for a guy who can face up, score on the block, play D, beast on the glass, hit the outside shot, and make timely passes.

Speaking of Kobe missing a lot:

Lakers' Brown OK with Kobe Bryant shooting a lot...if he's open

http://www.latimes.com/sports/lakersnow/la-sp-sn-brown-and-kobe-20120309,0,2605402.story?track=rss&utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter&dlvrit=53297

Kobe Bryant (http://www.latimes.com/topic/sports/basketball/kobe-bryant-PESPT000948.topic) took a lot of shots (31) and made very few (nine) in the Lakers' humiliating 106-101 loss to Washington.

Coach Mike Brown (http://www.latimes.com/topic/sports/basketball/mike-brown-%28basketball%29-PESPT000011565.topic) critiqued some of Bryant's shot selection after that game, but said Friday he was fine with Bryant shooting "if they're good shots."

"Don't get me wrong, that's a lot of shots, and you hope that it's spread out more [among players], but Kobe's been taking a lot of shots his whole career and he's had success with it," Brown said. "If he's open, I'm OK with him taking it. That's how I was with LeBron (http://www.latimes.com/topic/sports/basketball/lebron-james-PESPT008359.topic) [James (http://www.latimes.com/topic/sports/basketball/lebron-james-PESPT008359.topic)]. If LeBron's open, I'm OK with him taking it."

Brown coached James in Cleveland for five seasons before being fired. He is in his first season as the Lakers' coach.

The Lakers finish what has been a numbingly bad three-game road trip Friday night in Minnesota. They lost to Detroit in overtime the day before losing to Washington.

Bryant made only eight of 26 attempts in the loss to Detroit.

He is shooting 43.5% this season, what would be his worst accuracy since shooting 43.3% in 2004-05.

The unpolished argument was a good one 3 or 4 years ago, not so much these days. He's now 26, at or near his physical prime, his skills have improved but not enough to think he's going to become much better than what he is now.
He's still the best center by far, but he is now in the what you see is what you'll get stage of his carrer imo.

At this point I'd be willing to bet it's any of the teams targeting Pau floating bullshit out there to keep the heat on and stir the drama pot in the Lakers locker room a little with the deadline creeping up. The last round of Pau trade rumors didn't help that team out any, now you have this on the back of a few bad losses, rumors of players being unhappy with shot distribution, voicing concerns about their coach, etc. Who knows? Let all that stew by the deadline maybe the Lakers will have come down on their asking price.
