US soldier kills Afghan civilians in Kandahar
A US soldier in Afghanistan has killed 10 civilians and wounded five in Kandahar province after suffering a breakdown, officials say.
He left his military base in the early hours of the morning and opened fire after entering local homes; women and children are said to be among the dead.
Nato said it was investigating the "deeply regrettable incident".
Anti-US sentiment is already high in Afghanistan after US soldiers burnt copies of the Koran last month.
US officials have apologised repeatedly for the incident at a Nato base in Kabul, but they failed to quell a series of protests and attacks that killed at least 30 people and six US troops.
Local people have reportedly gathered near the base in Panjwai district to protest about Sunday's killings, and the US embassy is advising against travel to the area.

You're making shit up.

You're making shit up.
You missed the point, Chump. Defending this guy in Afghanistan is just as stupid as defending the Fort Hood murderer.
I don't know if anybody here made excuses for Nadal Hasan, but a lot of people have tried to excuse it. I don't give a shit why either one did it, both of them need to be put down. Maybe they both went ape-shit crazy, I don't know. But I'm guessing they both knew that killing a bunch of people is wrong, and has consequences. 'Nuff said.
I will say that there are a lot of people here in this country who should be glad that we don't react the way the Afghans are going to, over an incident like this. (And don't anybody start with the rationalizations about how the situations are different. Do that, and you're no better than the people defending the shooters.)

Sad to hear...word is that many of the victims were women and children. I'm glad to see the leadership come out so quickly and strongly against the act. Hopefully it's enough to prevent more riots.

"Only one U.S. soldier appeared to have been involved in the shootings, a U.S. official in Washington said, but that is not what witnesses were saying.
Afghan officials say Western forces shot dead 16 civilians including nine children in southern Kandahar province on Sunday in a rampage that witnesses said was carried out by American soldiers who were laughing and appeared drunk."

shooting at people in afghanistan when they are not shooting at them and have their weapon in their hand and are not around any buildings is against our Rules of Engagement. So in any unread report of this whatso ever, what this "soldier" did was wrong. He will be punished harshly. This should not go against the 99.99% of soldiers who professionally deal with the politics and nonsense of american wars.

I am a little confused, was this post a preemptive strike? Has someone posted that this is indicative of all of our soldiers over there? If so, then I also disagree. In fact, I would like to say that I am amazed at the discipline that the soldiers display in general despite all that they are dealing with over there. However you got real defensive really quickly and introduced an aspect to the conversation which would likely not otherwise have been introduced.

Won't be as big a deal in Afghanistan as burning some already defaced books. Here, however: That is horrible. War sucks.

U.S. soldier acquitted of murder in Iraq
By KATARINA KRATOVAC, Associated Press Writer
BAGHDAD - A military panel Friday acquitted U.S. Army Spc. Jorge G. Sandoval on charges he killed two unarmed Iraqis, but it convicted him of planting evidence on one of the men in attempt to cover up the shooting.
Sandoval, 22, of Laredo, Texas, had faced five charges in the April and May deaths of two unidentified men. He was found not guilty of the two murder charges, but the panel decided he had placed a detonation wire on one of the bodies to make it look as if the man was an insurgent.

Also, a quick Wiki lookup on military discharge provides this little nugget...
"With this characterization of service, all veterans' benefits are lost, regardless of any past honorable service."
I'll do some more research to independently verify, but I'm pretty sure you (and whatever source you're quoting) are full of shit.

So your response is "I think it's in here somewhere" and then you cite a story of a soldier who was acquitted, meaning that he was found not guilty.
Nice work. :rolleyes

It's not better, it's wrong. Your original statement that the gentleman would receive a dishonorable discharge and still receive his benefits is just factually inaccurate.
As for your second strategy of attack...it's not better, it's your opinion. The process of trying a military member by a jury of their peers is nothing new. And the fact that you think the military would collectively try to "protect one of its own" shows just how blindly jaded you are. If anything, I think the jury would want to be more severe in its punishment to show the world that this violation of the Geneva Convention and standing RoE will not be tolerated.

You don't even have to go that far to find out why they might be more severe. I would think that there are a ton of guys (americans) over there who would want to lock him up tight forever because he just made their jobs harder and significantly more dangerous at a time when tempers are already flaring.

Because you are adding something new specifically to get defensive about it.
Perhaps the spirit behind you preemptive effort was right.
