No Link but @JMcDonald_SAEN:Spurs announce they've assigned Cory Joseph to Austin. Hmmm ...."
Not a surprise, but I guess that means the Mills' signing is finalized? :downspin:

IMO, this just means they're good with Neal/Manu for backup, and that it's more important for CJ to get time in Austin.

@JMcDonald_SAEN Cory Joseph heading to Austin again could mean nothing more than kid needs playing time. Time of the move is curious, however.

Probably indicative of Patty Mills' status. The Spurs have consistently moved him back and forth between Austin based on injuries and PG availability all season.

He's got no business in a Spurs uniform tbh. Not just yet.
Now maybe the focus can be on getting another big on this roster?? :smchode:

Joseph has 25 points and 6 assists yesterday for the first game of this assignment:

It's good to see him producing at the D-League level. The best for his development would likely be to stay with the Toros until the end of the season which isn't sure with Parker injury and Mills visa troubles.

Good to see Joseph do something. I wonder if anyone watched it and could tell us whether CJ or Dentmon played PG.
Cool stat on Joseph: After missing his second free throw of the D-League season, he's 34-for-34 at the line with the Toros.
Meanwhile, he's 7-for-11 at the line for the Spurs. Well, at least he has perfected that aspect of being a Spur :lol

It was strange because the Toros often ran a three guard lineup with Dentmon, Lester Hudson and Joseph after falling way behind. Whenever he was out there, Joseph ran the point almost exclusively. Iowa didn't press with anymore than one person, and Joseph handled that fine. He was looking for his own shot a bit too much after a couple of nice makes; Toros bigs Zeller and Wright should have been fed a lot more. Defensively, Joseph didn't allow a much larger and reigning league MVP guard to go off on him, so there's that.

I wonder if the D-League looks slower to him now, after spending some time in the NBA? Maybe his time here will help him get the most out of the D-League. I hope he develops and makes his way back. He really put a lot of effort into trying to bring defensive pressure, and he always looked like he was soaking up every bit of knowledge he could. And the other guys on the bench all seemed like they liked him and took him seriously.
We may see him again, but I hope it's not until next year, at least.

I'm not sure people know it but you can re-watch D-League games on the D-League site with their futurecast tool.
In games I've seen, Dentmon monopolized the ball a lot. The best for Joseph would be that a team called Dentmon up. Toros also have a logjam of guards with Joseph, Dentmon, Squeaky, Hudson, Wanamaker and Sanders. Their roster could use some retooling especially if Joseph stay for the reminder of the year.

Yeah, I don't know how many more roster moves the Toros are allowed. That Leo Lyons trade was a disaster. Josh Davis should just be injury waived so he can rest his back. I think the Dentmon PG experiment may be over, especially if Joseph and Johnson are going to stay on the team the rest of the season. Hudson is a freak athlete and can play 1-3 in the D-League.

In fairness, Austin won 112-82 in blow out fashion. It appears that the competitive level of the game disappeared at some point. Still, thats an insane stat line at any level.
timvp, what happened with Dentmon? Why didn't he play? Getting traded? Called up?
Edit: I saw the "Spurs Call-up Justin Dentmon" thread as soon as I closed this one. Got it.

I wonder if Joseph regrets only playing one year at UT now? The guaranteed money of his 1st round contract probably made it a positive move for him. Still, I'm convinced a CJ with three or four years of college basketball under his belt would have been a much more ready commodity for the team that drafted him. As it stands now, the Spurs will probably pay for the development he needed at UT-Austin and will lose him to some guard-starved NBA team in a year or two.
Now I see in the SA Express News today that not only J'Covan Brown, but also Myck Kabongo are looking to go to the NBA. I understand Brown considering the move to the NBA - he truly can be an undersized shooting guard as he has all kinds of offensive skills. He has three years of college experience and has really improved on the court - he is also a more mature person. He was way too volatile when he first got to the Longhorns.
Kobango is simply not an NBA player right now. Just because you are a McDonalds All-American doesn't prepare you to play against 25-30 year olds who have as much or more ability and years of experience.
Quite honestly, MK is still figuring out how to play college ball. Rick Barnes may have to reconsider signing guys who are more interested in playing 30 college games and leaving the program as opposed to guys actually interested in developing as college basketball players. I don't see the benefit of losing 2-3 guys to the NBA draft every year - especially the one and dones.
Kevin Durant was such a great player that is one guy you look at differently.
Other guys, even really talented ones like Tristan Thompson need more time in college to hone their skills.
Unfortunately, the NBA was only able to have a one year college requirement because of the NBA players association/agents/etc threatening legal action.
I think college basketball AND the NBA suffers because of this situation.

No body rebounds in the D-league...have you been to a game before? Its like a street basketball game...
I think everybody gets how you hate Joseph. Personally, I think he will just be alright. Not expecting him to make the strides that tony made after his rookie year. You never know though.

I've seen D-League games as well and there are excellent players in that league. There are probably 20-30 heavy rotation players NBA who spent a year or so in the D-League.
I may be wrong about this, but Anthony Morrow, the guy who lit up the Spurs a couple of nights ago with Minnesota spent a decent amount of time in the D-League a few years ago. He was a former Spur, actually.
I hope Cory Joseph can stay in the D-League this year and possibly even next year. I still have hope that he can turn into something.
I've got to think that R.C. Buford envisioned needing to get some legitimate seasoning for CJ in the D-League. I hope the Spurs give him 3-4 years in the program to get where he needs to be. They seem to have pulled the plug already with James Anderson after only two years.

He's looked raw, but IMO he hasn't looked like this horrible never gonna be anything player. With summer league, offseason, full training camp, and we may see improvement. The kids only 19. Yeah he's not tony Parker at that age but Parker is a one a million talent obviously. Patience.

I watch that game on youtube... Sure you did.
JA's injury seemingly took a year out of the Spur's investment in their young hopeful.
Cory's development thus far looks okay to me, given his age and health.
