I only kill poisonous snakes. I hate rattlers. I've been really lucky. Hit twice by big ones but they didn't get a fang in me. Had a six footer hit me on the ankle/jeans cuff but didn't go through the boot top. Stayed stuck to my jeans as I went airborne and standing broad jumped about 10 feet. When he fell off I stepped on his head and cut his head off with my pocket knife. That was exciting. He left a big grapefruit sized venom wet spot on my jeans.

I've been nose to nose with a couple.

I walked up to a leaning hollow tree one time and stood on my tiptoes and looked inside and there was a 5 footer coiled right about 6" from my nose.

Another time I was climbing a mountain in West Texas near Big Bend and pulled my self up over a rock ledge "chin up style" and a little mad bastard started rattling like 18" in front of my face. I let him have the ledge. That hurt.

Well, the big ones are pretty damn good fried (cut cross grain into steaks between the ribs...they taste kind of like frog legs) but they are a pain in the ass to skin. I've done it several times. They keep having nervous twitches for almost 24 hours after you kill them. Fuckers will be dead with their heads cut off and you stick the knife in them and they coil up and contract...takes two strong guys to skin a big one. And then there's the smell. Big rattlesnake funk smell is almost impossible to wash off. I finally decided it wasn't worth the trouble.

If you want to fry them use 1/2 and 1/2 corn meal and flour. Dip the steaks in scrambled egg with enough tobasco to make it dark pink, then into the dry mix. Fry in hot oil and enjoy.
