Right now, no news is good news. The only concrete report that could come out at this time would be that he got picked up off waivers by another team, which would obviously be bad. Chances are we will know what the deal is after 5pm sometime tomorrow, but not before.

They can't claim him. See Bruno's post a page or two back for which five teams are allowed to claim Diaw.

What is it about Taco Cabana that is so addicting? I mean....don't get me wrong, it's good stuff and I'll eat it occasionally, but it's only like a rung ahead of Taco Bell on the Tex-Mex Ladder. But I know some people out on the west coast who would kill for some TCs.

The first time I came to Texas I was in high school and my sister lived in Austin so I begged her to take me to a Spurs game. She did and we hit up Taco Cabana down in SA before the game. I was blown away that you could buy alcohol in a fast food joint. Now that I live in Austin I eat there for lunch quite a bit.

I used to enjoy TC's, and my friend still swears by their bean and cheese after a late night of carousing ... but after having seen their portions dwindle over time, and the growing stinginess with condiments, upon being extremely disappointed and feeling jipped a few years ago I told myself I would never buy from them again.

For those of you who swear by TC's, just know that it USED to be even better.
They once served Tacos Al Carbon. Those were fantastic. I have no idea why they stopped. Back in High School (Mid 80's for me) TC was awesome.
The fajitas have always been a bit over seasoned for my liking.

Someone told me years ago, that the owners were brothers. Some of the fastfood restaurants were called TaCasita, the others TC. I remember the TC at Wurzbach and Bandera, was originally called TaCasita, but changed to TC. This was all going on mid 80s. I don't know if the 1st TC was the one @San Pedro/Hildebrand.

Actually it was a Dairy Queen that had closed down. Felix Stehling, the guy that started the Taco Cabana restaurants owned a bar across the street on the other corner, a real nasty neighborhood beer joint called the Chrystal Pistol. He bought the vacant Dairy Queen for more parking for his beer joint.
He and his brother Mike got the idea to put the building to use and were partners in the restaurant and when it became wildly successful. After they opened several more, the brothers split up the business over whether to expand out of San Antonio or keep it smaller and with the original concept.
The legend is that the original TC which opened as a completely open air outdoor restaurant had its entire set of tables and chairs stolen the first night so Felix decided to operate 24 hours per day. Later they added a wooden frame roof and some canvas walls. Thus was born the 24/ patio Mexican restaurant concept and history was made.
The thing that was so good about the original concept of the TCs was that it worked like a cafeteria. Everything was a la carte, so you could get whatever you wanted such as one taco al carbon, a guisada taco and two enchiladas. And the food was not only made to order as you moved down the line, it was damn good S.A. Tex/Mex
When they started the pre-determined dinner plates with rice and beans, it meant the end of the cafeteria style a la carte--and the prices went up. I think that was after the buy out from the original owners.
That original TC had a certain ambiance at the early morning hours after the bars closed--including a bullet hole in one of the plexiglass windows put there when a couple of dealers had a dispute one morning.

Gotta talk about something to pass the time until the deadline passes.
If I want fast mexican food I'll go to the hole in the wall a block from my house...where the mexican guy who looks like he just got out of the pen is loading up the tortillas with generous helpings of beef hot off the grill and piling on the fresh avacado, onions, jalepenos and tomatoes. Top it off with some of thier kick ass green sauce and it's go time.

after all the thing with the spurs is:
If Manu/Timmy/Tony get hurt, it basically is over.
If Splitter/Blair/Bonner go down we have no real chance too...even smallball wont save us.
We cant do anything to replace the first 3, but with Diaw we could overcome an injury to one of the later guys (not saying he is as good as Splitter, but we at least would keep the depth and Diaw is good for a nice game here and there too).

Still have my fingers crossed Diaw clears waivers, which I don't take to be a given...at all. Even if he isn't in great shape and isn't the player he once was, I think he'd bring energy and enthusiasm if he finds himself in a meaningful role on good team. I'm not going to excuse any professional from slacking off, but I do understand that he was in a frustrating situation with Charlotte, and he's been a solid contributor to good teams before. Let's hope he gets a chance to prove he can do it here.

As for food? Laughing at all the hoopla about Taco Cabana. I gave up on them when that New York firm bought them out, ruined the food, and franchised them out.
There are a thousand more taco places here ten times better than they are now.
I remember the very first Taco Cabana on the corner of San Pedro and Hildebrand where the Dairy Queen used to be, that was a good place to eat, but they quickly went down hill after being bought out.

Keep in mind Hickson was with Golden State before being re-routed to big man hell.
On Wednesday, J.J. Hickson was at New Orleans Arena before the Golden State Warriors played the Hornets.
He had been waived Monday by the Sacramento Kings, and with the 48-hour waiver period about to end, he was prepared to accept the Warriors' offer to join them for the rest of the season. With about five minutes left until the deadline passed, he made his way out to the court, wearing Warriors gear.
“I was walking out to go shoot, get some shots up before the game, and they (previously) said I couldn’t go on the court until the deadline,” Hickson. “So I was going out to go out and get some shots and they told me I couldn’t go on the court because I didn’t clear waivers.”

What sucks is that you have to wait till 5 p.m. no matter what, should be 2 days to the hour that said player was placed on waivers. For example, say Diaw was put on waivers around 8 a.m. on Wednesday, he should clear waivers at 8 a.m. on Friday.

I believe Bruno said he clears waivers at 5 p.m. CST
Yep but I'm not 100% sure about that. It could be 2 pm ET too.
Sheridan has a piece on the waivers timing:
http://www.sheridanhoops.com/2012/02/24/breaking-news-13-man-nba-rosters-to-become-permanent-waiver-rules-could-be-altered/
Currently, the league sends out a memo to all 30 teams at 10 a.m., 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Friday announcing whether anyone has been waived, and teams then have 48 business hours — which excludes Saturdays and Sundays — to put in a claim. Thus, a player waived at 6 p.m. Friday under the current system cannot clear waivers until 6 p.m. the following Tuesday.
Under the proposed new system, there would be one waiver wire each day at 5 p.m. Eastern time, and the 48-hour clock would immediately begin ticking.
“The rule as it was crafted before has a long history. Back in the day there was different technology, stuff like Telexes, and now today in the digital age there’s not a whole lot of reason why we shouldn’t do it,” Jackson said.
I don't know if the waiver rule has still been changed. My guess would be no. In that case, it's possible that Diaw clear waivers today at 2 pm ET. Diaw waived was official on bobcats website around 1pm ET Wednesday.
Bruno

Dallas adding a perimeter player was a logical move. They had so much dpeth inside even with Williams waived.

Bruno, I read it differently than you, especially the "Under the proposed new system, there would be one waiver wire each day at 5 p.m. Eastern time, and the 48-hour clock would immediately begin ticking." line.
As I understand it, there's only one waiver deadline per day at 5pm ET, which means Biaw should clear waivers at that time today.
I had an even more restrictive reading of the "and the 48-hour clock would immediately begin ticking." meaning the clock for Diaw would have started ticking as soon as he was waived, meaning Diaw would have passed waivers around noun today... in about 15 minutes :D

If the Spurs hypothetically sign Diaw, will they rush to get him in uniform tonight? In a normal situation, they would take their time but considering that Pop is probably going to rest a lot of players against the Hornets tomorrow night, he might want to allow Diaw to at least be part the team one game before he gets thrown to the fire.

I was just about to ask. Realistically, if he were signed today at 6 or 5 or whenever. Would he be able to play tonight? Especially now that Tiago and Bonner are out. If not, I wonder if Dawson will get a lot of run tonight.

Heh... they'll be completing his physical on the plane if they do. It would be nice to get him in a uniform, for the reason you suggest, but that's awfully quick, isn't it? I guess it depends on whether the waiver period expires at 1:00 or 5:00.

I rather agree with bruno, it seems to me that they will now only send one 'wire' each day, but that the clock starts ticking immediatly when the buyout is announced by the team.
They must consider that with the current means of communication, the teams in fact don't really need the 3 wires everyday...

I get the feeling he will have a breakout game vs the Suns on Tuesday, playing against his former team where he had some good years.
How Diaw can assist Spurs yet again
Diaw also fits with those around him. This is an odd Spurs team, where the tallest are arguably the team’s best passers.
Asked if that was true, Stephen Jackson nodded. Asked if he considered himself a big, he smiled and said, “Yes.”
Jackson played with Diaw in Charlotte, and he says Diaw’s passing is on another level. “His basketball IQ,” he said, “is through the roof.”
Sunday said the same. Then, Diaw set picks and defended and found his teammates with crisp passes. He ended with seven rebounds and three steals, and his two-assist total was low because various Spurs missed shots with his passes.

I really like what I've seen out of Diaw since he's been here. I just noticed that Turiaf, in his first game with the Heat, had 4 points, 6 boards, and 3 blocks in 18 minutes of play against Dallas.
The one thing that still seems to bother everyone about this Spurs team is interior defense. And I can't help thinking that even though we did well getting Diaw, Miami just got better, too. Right where we needed to get better.
I know you can't have it all. But I want it all.

I'd still rather have a guy like Turiaf (esp for playoff basketball) whose role will be rather limited and won't need a whole lot of teaching / coaching / minutes. Just a guy you can send in to guard big guys and defend the paint. Pop already has to figure out minutes for 10-11 guys as it is.

Turiaf's box score doesn't show it, but he was easily beaten by both Odom (and Nowitzki?) according to reports..
Diaw on the other hand held his own and did more against Nowitzki, and has been the best post defender apart from Splitter and Duncan for the team in the games he has played so far.
Turiaf surely shows more hustle, energy and registers on the box scores; but Diaw gets the Spurs the hockey assists, the screens and the savvy spacing plays that don't get recorded on box scores, unfortunately.
If one takes a look at the games he has played for the Spurs - his +/- will be on the good side, and overall apart from passivity on the offensive end, there wouldn't be much to complain about his play. Yet if you look at his PER and other box score stats, it would be underwhelming. I remember one other guy whose PER was terrible but who did superb for the Spurs.
His jersey number was just retired sometime back.

So where do you think Diaw fits best in the rotation? Taking Blair's minutes (as a starter), or taking Bonner's role (off the bench w/ Tiago), or taking Tiago's minutes (since Splitter offers no "floor spacing"). Or some combination of all 3?
I think in terms of getting him up to speed for the playoffs what would be most conducive is having a defined, steady role instead of the random insertions based on whatever Pop's particular whim is for the day that seems to be his "role" so far.
I know Pop was all how gushing and pleased about a week ago that everyone was obedient and carrying out whatever Pop wanted on any particular day and that's great but the reality IMO is the team will funtion better when roles are clearly defined, that way guys can have an expectation heading in to each game which helps them be more mentally prepared.

Easy.. taking either of Blair's/ Bonner's minutes depending on match ups. Diaw is a good fit with either Splitter / Duncan.
And unlike your general nonsense about Popovich, the reality is that his record shows that given the right talent, his coaching will bring the best out of them.

I will remain unconvinced this "fly by the seat of your pants" approach will ultimately "bring out the best". I hope so, but at the same time my experience of watching basketball over the years is guys do their best when their roles are clearly defined from game to game with only slight deviations from the norm.
Also, your claims that he is a better defensive player than Turiaf is dubious at best. His warts are already starting to show. Recall Timvp's game thread:
Boris Diaw B-
This was the first time that Boris Diaw struggled on the defensive end while in a Spurs uniform. He was giving it his all but he was caught out of position a few times. A couple other times Diaw simply rotated to the wrong player, which is obviously something that he will eventually learn to correct. Offensively, even though Diaw didn't hit a shot, he was still an asset. His passing continues to be a beautiful fit in San Antonio's offense.

Also, your claims that he is a better defensive player than Turiaf is dubious at best. His warts are already starting to show. Recall Timvp's game thread:
Lol warts. Guess you didn't read the part of Tim's comments, saying that Diaw is an asset.

An asset offensively is what I took that to mean. And I'm not even sold on that tbh. If he is afraid to take open shots teams are going to learn they don't have to guard him. Then what will his value be at this point? As a screen setter and passer? I'd much rather Tiago filled this role.

Your not sold on anything other than trolling and shitty takes. How is it that 99.9% of NBA coaches, GMs, and Spur fans think Diaw is a great accquistion, but here you are trying to find flaws in Diaw being a Spur? SMH.

Because their are flaws, as Timvp pointed out in the game thread, and its starting to show. Now that the emotions of the "French reunion" of Diaw and Parker has commenced, we'll start to see even more and more.

I expect a perfect rotation, not a perfect player. Or at least as good as humanly possible. A coach has all year to get it right, he should get it right every time come by playoffs. And from what I've seen so far, I don't like Pop's rotations (despite the winning). It's fools gold. It's bad enough that guys are taking games off left and right, but combine that with the fact that nobody knows who is going to get minutes from game to game. I can't imagine all this craziness is actually going to translate to playoff success.
And Yep seen quite a few games so far. Mark my words, Diaw will do jack for this team except fuck up everyone else's role and bring nothing special to the table. I would have much rather gone with the current 4 (Tim, Blair, Tiago, Bonner) than have this fat douchebag eating up minutes.

From what I keep reading from you (especially the trash after the Portland game..btw.. the motivation that Pop gave that side by throwing that game has led to...them being a tanking candidate now), I think you have hardly watched a single Spurs game this season, let alone, one, after the acquisition of Diaw, Jackson and Mills.

If and when Pop steers the spurs into the nba finals using this frenetic "fly by the seat of your pants" rotation I'll be the first to bow down and give him his props.

He needs to replace Blair, not Tiago.
And if nobody is guarding Diaw, he should dribble in as close as he can and take a 10-footer or draw people to him in the paint and then pass to a cutter for a lay-up.

IF Diaw can replicate Blair's positives in the starting lineup and give it better passing and defense then I'd sanction it. That's not even a given. Plus Blair is the more natural fit since Duncan plays most of his minutes out on the perimeter now. So that would be an initial hurdle to overcome. I imagine the Diaw/Duncan tandem would need a little extra time to gel because of this. In that respect I would just want to see it happen more sooner than later and have it stay that way for the remainder of the year. Unfortunately, I just don't see Pop giving Diaw an established role and sticking with it. As long as the spurs keep winning he's going to continue with this mix and match dink and dunk strategy which will work great up until the playoffs start.
Turiaf's box score doesn't show it, but he was easily beaten by both Odom (and Nowitzki?) according to reports..
Yet if you look at his PER and other box score stats, it would be underwhelming. I remember one other guy whose PER was terrible but who did superb for the Spurs.
His jersey number was just retired sometime back.
I didn't see the game, but I can believe that his box looks better than his actual performance. It happens. The main thing I was looking at were those 3 blocks, anyway. Usually when a guy is picking up blocks like that, he's making trouble in the middle. And, like I said, it's still the one piece that concerns me about the playoffs.
Diaw chose the Spurs.
Turiaf chose the Heat.
c'est la vie
And, yeah, that's the bottom line, isn't it?

I was at the Kings game 2 days ago. What I noticed is he likes to dribble and spin inside which automatically attracts help defense and create open shots for teammates. I don't think he's afraid to take shot. He pass the ball to make plays and not just to get the ball out of his hand. BTW, I think he's a nice guy, He signed my ticket, ended up using my sharpee to give autographs to other fans and returned it after.

Diaw is passive but he isn't dumb, if he realizes his defender isn't watching him, he will take the ball to the basket for a layup. And like others have said, since he likes to drive to the basket, that will draw attention, someone will be open, Diaw will find him.

Maybe it's rationalization on my part, but I think LJ made a good point in arguing with me on some other thread that Blair can't be too much of a liability in the playoffs as long as he only plays like the first six minutes of each half and no more. For the last 18 minutes of each half Pop will probably mix and match with some combination of Diaw/Splitter/Bonner/Duncan, or possibly just go smallball with Tim.
As long as Splitter isn't dropped from the rotation completely, I won't be too upset, I guess.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but realistically, I would be prepared to see the following alot more often now..
Splitter: DNP-CD.
Pop's already getting the masses subconciously ready for this by holding Tiago out of numerous games for what amounts to silly made up reasons.
We know come playoff time Bonner will get his 20-25 minutes, and Blair will log his 15-20. These are things we know.
And like a kid with a puzzle, Pop is transfixed with his newest enigma named Boris Diaw, whom he's probably dying to try out in 20 different lineups.
I'm afraid when it's all said and done Pop will roll with mostly Duncan, Diaw, Blair/Bonner and small ball. Until panic sets in, that is.

Credit to Diaw and his basketball IQ and the Spurs for knowing it was there.
Nonetheless, it is still amazing to me there are so few misreads on the offensive end. What is not amazing is this thread makes its reappearance after a game in which he does not miss a shot. At least I dont think he did, have not looked at the box.

Diaw is just a role player fitting into a system that is working. Getting over hyped because the Spurs are winning. The Spurs could easily be winning with Jefferson still on the team . The Spurs have had an easy road through the playoffs so far playing Utah and a banged up Clipper team and Diaw is not a big difference maker that would have changed the results from wins to losses. Neither Utah nor the Clippers are as good as Memphis was last year.
Still don't believe the Spurs matched up well with the Lakers and would have been beaten had they met up with them but OK City will take care of the Lakers and the Spurs will slip past OK City in a tough 7 game series. OK City is not seasoned enough to take it all the way. It will end up being the easiest scenario for the Spurs with the injuries to the top two teams in the East. Looks like the Spurs will get their 5th and final title in the Duncan era this year.

Does Blair have any trade value at this point?
If not, I'd be fine keeping him on as the 5th or 6th big as injury insurance or just cutting him to let him get a shot at minutes somewhere else if he wants. IIRC, his contract is both cheap and non-guaranteed, so either option is practical.

Well sure, but if we're fortunate enough to win out this year, I'd still love to give the guys a shot a defending the title, even if they aren't favorites. I love watching this team play, and even if someone else turns out to be better, I'd still be just fine with seeing them go down fighting unless there are moves that we can make that are clear improvements.

In all honesty Pop did an 180. Earlier in the season it looked like Bonner and Blair were his second and third bigs. That's why alot of us were concerned when Diaw was acquired. Pop made the right moves and is now playing Diaw and Splitter as second and third bigs. Given how much he overplayed Bonner in the past I don't think anyone could have assumed it was a given.

I think it's too late in the game for him to make an impact on this team. The other concern is that if he does get burn, he eats up Tiago's minutes.
But the major issue I have is to hand minutes to another softie after just getting rid of one. Playoff basketball is very physical. It's not the type of basketball that lazy people want to play.
Boris, much like Bonner, is a big that doesn't want to be one. His game is pass-first and he feels more comfortable away from the basket.
