Hopefully it means more Splitter but will likely result in more small ball. Thankfully we have Jackson to help in that area now.
As for Dawson. Probably 0 minutes for him again even down one big.

Sucks to hear. Back spasms are incredibly painful, although at that level they probably get around the clock treatment and painkillers. Hope Matty rests up though because we have those 3 games in 3 days soon.

Bonner being out during the regular season will be a case of careful-what-you-wish-for. The Spurs have been barely above water with Bonner on the bench this season. It'll be a lot more difficult to win regular season games without him.
Of course, the hope is that Pop will now be forced to play Duncan and Splitter together ... and then fall in love. One of the few times this year he gave extended minutes to Duncan and Splitter was against the T'Wolves so I'm sure we'll see it some tonight.
As for Bonner, this is horrible timing for his back to act up. The schedule is about to get ultra condensed and backs don't heal overnight.

I sincerely think that Bonner should be ultra-careful...these back spasms are wicked...and just to be on the safe side...
I, SB, recommend he take at least 4-6 months off-no basketball at all!!!

No, man. Bonner with flaws is better than no Bonner at all and a rotation involving Duncan and small ball. I doubt if Pop is going to play Duncan and Splitter together and try small ball with Blair.
The next few games feature a back-to-back-to-back and something like 8 games in 11 days or the likes. Having a three man big rotation is going to be dangerous unless Diaw comes in immediately to contribute.
Bonner better get well quickly.

This. Bonner being hurt is NOT good for Spurs despite what some think. You're down a big and you're down a 3 pt shooter. Splitter's early history with the Spurs is that he is injury prone, so I wouldn't relish any injury to any Spurs big at any time.

No way. Bonner already has major flaws. If his shooting is the new added flaw, then it's not better. It's worse. Way worse.
Not saying that it's good he is injured. But to say that having him at 70% (or whatever the number is) is better than not at all? Ridiculous.

There is most definitely a difference between Bonner and small ball. Especially when your 4 was RJ. You can call Bonner "small" all you want but he defends opposing bigs and the pick and roll better than some of the small ball 4s we have trotted out in the past. Leonard and possibly Jax might be more viable as small ball 4s but there is definitely a difference.
Obstructed_View
03-21-2012, 01:46 PM
Matt bonner is big, but he's not A big. Kawhi Leonard is a better option at the power forward spot for the minutes you don't give to Splitter. Given the fact that RJ and Finley were smallball fours, Jack is also an upgrade over both RJ and Bonner. At least with Jack or Leonard you know you're giving up weight or height and gameplan for it, plus you've got defenders that can recover from the double team. With Bonner, the Spurs spent way too much time just letting guys shoot over him.

During games we watch on TV, this is what I hear:
"Where's Bonner?"
"Parker - throw it to Bonner!"
"Get it Bonner, get the ball. Mom, he didn't get it again." (regarding rebounding)
"Bonner needs a rest and some Gatorade. He's sweating."

As you and OV pointed out, that was maybe the case when we had Fin or RJ out there at the 4. But honestly i would have rather had RJ out there for small ball then Bon Bon. RJ and Bon Bon would get regularly steamrolled by their man but at least RJ had the occasional weakside block.
As this team is presently constructed, small ball is a much better option than Bonner as PF. Name one PF that Bonner would handle better than Kawhi.

Don't vilify Spurs fans for not being "heartbroken" because Matty is out. We're not sadists, we're just very frustrated with the status quo. :bang
As we all know, Bonner is the quintessential human victory cigar but is severely overused to the detriment of the team. It's frustrating to wish anything bad on someone who looks like a nice guy, but he needs to be off the court until the final minutes of a blowout game.
This sucks for Matty but is good for the Spurs.

I'm actually bummed about Bonner being hurt. Once Bonner is signed the ideal would be that Bonner moves to the 4th bigman spot and Diaw occupies the 3rd bigman role.
Blair to the bench - only to be seen in garbage time.
Say what you will about the king of the plus/minus - but hes much better than DeJuan at this juncture.
