View Full Version : Diaw Defending Dirk

Tonight Boris Diaw's defense was great on Dirk. In the past, I don't recall ever noting Diaw as any type of high-end Dirk defender.

Question for fans of the French national team, Suns or Mavs: Fluke performance or this had precedence?

Thanks.

I havent really seen him play since he was on the Suns, but I really like what I saw from him tonight. He was playing fantastic defense, going after loose balls and putting his full effort, I bet he is ecstatic to be out of Charlotte lol.

Given Diaw's weight, he isn't going to get pushed around by Dirk. He's also surprisingly quick on his feet. Dirk wasn't able to back him down in the post or dribble past him easily.

His defense was great, offensively he didn't show much, was disappointed with him passing up so many close in shots for kick outs tithe perimeter.

Dirk always plays dirty,,,throwing elbows, pushing...I am glad that at least one Spurs is playing him tough and not backing down...I was very impressed by his defense on Dirk.....:king

His defense was better than I remember it. We'll see if he can keep it up but the effort and awareness was on full display.

Agreed. He cant push diaw around. He is a hell of a passer also. Cant wait to see him in shape.

Diaw is doing a fine job usually on Dirk with FNT but nothing special. FNT Dirk stopper is Florent Pietrus.

Timvp, you should give Diaw an A tonight. His defense against Dirk was damn good.

Can't tell with Atlanta, Phoenix or Charlotte but with the French NT, Bobo has always been a solid/quick defender who can defend on the 3/4/5

Can you believe that Charlotte cut Diaw? No wonder they've only won 7 games this year. I wonder if they'd let me go coach a few games for them.

Might be a good way to earn some money for the franchise... I can see the ads now:

'Come to Charlotte, coach a real NBA team for a day.'

To the negative nellies, who gives a fuck. His offense will improve as he assimilates. His fucking superstar national teammate wasn't even playing tonight. Also, we don't need another ballhog and more scoring. We need fucking defense and if he's going to play defense like he did tonight we can win the fucking championship.

Gee Im so damn happy that the team is working it's a whole turnaround from 1 month. I felt lost. I didn't get to see the game tonight but by reading this I feel really encouraged. Im not saying anything but at least we have a team to fight.

Has there ever been another Spurs team with this many defensive options to throw at Dirk? They've got Leonard, Sjax, and Diaw who can all play really good defense on Dirk, just last year all they had was Dice!

The only other time I can remember was when they first got Finley and Bowen was on the team.

Darkwaters

If Diaw is content to focus on dirty work (defense, screens, box outs etc) and shoot when wide open...well, I think we'll be ok with that. We've so much offensive firepower that a guy that doesn't NEED shots (but CAN make them) is nice to have around.

And in all actuality, was Finley ever really that good at it?

A better option against Bosh when we play the Heat in the finals.

Kurt Thomas usually got Duncan. Thats the whole reason they acquired Kurt.

His D was very good tonight. He also, set some some good screens (Ex. Jack's corner 3) and seemed comfortable in the offense.

Him and Kurt Thomas had the most success. Duncan fucking owned Stoudemire.

Who doesn't own Stoudemire?

I'd argue that Dice 2 years ago (by himself) was the best option we've had on Dirk since prime Bowen. That's against Dirk the year prior to almost single handedly winning a title. Arguably the third biggest reason we won that series after the play of Parker & Hill.

I would not use PHX and Duncan as an example lol, nobody on that team ever could gaurd Tim really.

LOL yeah most success, but it was very limited (Not to fault them then though he is one of the best ever and you could not guard him one on one).

Wasn't saying he could guard Duncan...But somebody on that team had to do it, and I believe Diaw was one of them. Just sayin.

Strange how the Spurs go from not having the personnel on the wings to keep up with quicker teams to being stacked in the backcourt and on the perimeter but with a weak frontline :lol

Yeah, he was setting good screens. I can't wait till TP comes back and we see them on the court together at times.

But anyway, in his limited time, he made waaaay more of an impact playing within the offense/defense than Blair ever has

What stood out to me the most -- other than his defense -- was his high basketball IQ. For just joining the team this afternoon he did a great job in the pick n roll and didn't seem uncomfortable on offense. Can't wait to see how he does with couple of games with this team under his belt.

Again, like I said in the pre-signing Diaw thread..

Diaw is not a great defensive player, but his basketball IQ alone, will elevate the Spurs's defense over any defensive contributions that Blair could provide..

My thought exactly.
I remember him doing a fine job on Yao just because he knew exactly what to focus on to have a shot at slowing down the giant.

I'm happy with how the whole team defended Dirk, tbh, regardless of whether it was Diaw, Blair, Jackson, Green, Bonner, Green or even Manu in switches. Everyone was physical on him and bodied him up.

My concern is A) Dirk gets a lot of calls in Dallas that he didn't get tonight and B) when he's on, it just doesn't matter, dude hits a lot of tough shots. He missed 5 or 6 he usually makes.

We played him great, but a lot of it was him not playing well too. Our defense isn't THAT bad when he goes 12-of-15 and it's not this good when he's 5-of-21.

I was going to write about his screens. They don't show in any stats but good screens are a big offensive weapon - just an ungrateful one.
