SW, that was her being rebellious.
I'm not saying that single parenthood is easy by any means, but some women with the resources to pull it off are choosing it, and that's their deal. If someone with the finances to do it wants to or feels that's better than marrying the man that got them pregnant then that's their choice. That's not being rebellious - that's trying to have the child's best interests in mind. If the father isn't going to be a good father or husband, then that's not the best decision to stay there. Most of my friends that have had parents that "stayed together for the kids" have said that it's just detrimental to every relationship there in the house.

Having a functional two parent household is almost always better than one parent - but no one should put a kid through dysfunction just because they're old-fashioned.

SpursWoman

How is making sure you're in a good relationship with someone BEFORE you get pregnant dysfunctional?

Jekka
06-21-2005, 02:15 PM
No, it's not....that's in the MOTHER'S best interest.

So you're saying that a mother trapped in a loveless and dysfunctional relationship is better off staying there for the kids? As if the kids can't tell the parents are miserable, which in turn isn't going to have positive effects on the kids. Really, though, what I'm calling into question are the men that aren't really fit to be good fathers - if the guy isn't going to be a stand up dad or husband, then why is it in the child's best interest for him to be there? Is it better to grow up always having a single mom, or having to go through a divorce?

SpursWoman

I thought the subject of this discussion was getting knocked up BEFORE you got married...like what apparently is going on with Bennifer Part Deux

I agree...some situations the kids are far better off. But in the spirit of the original train of thought...you're more likely to find this out about a potentially less-than-stellar father (or mother) if you are together--married or otherwise--a pretty decent amount of time before you actually bring kids into the picture.

You can't do much once things have changed over the long run.

Jekka

How is making sure you're in a good relationship with someone BEFORE you get pregnant dysfunctional?

I'm not here to advocate single parenthood over two parents - and I didn't really jump into this to talk about what people "should have done in the first place". We can't look at all situations for what people "should have done" - if it happens, it happens - this isn't something you can "do over" - and we're not all the same, we all make different choices. I'm advocating the right to choose single parenthood over something that the woman may feel as a disadvantageous alternative for her and her child.

This is not about staying in a dysfunctional relationship, it's about making the choice to have a child without the presence of a father. Whenever a woman decides to have a child WITHOUT a man in the child's life she is thinking about satisfying her own whims. There is a big difference between choosing to do that and leaving an abusive man or a marriage that is unhealthy for a woman and her children.

Yes there are plenty of wonderful single parent families and there are plenty of dysfunctional two parent families. My problem is with choices people make without regard to the life they are bringing into this world.

as SW said, when finances are not an issue?

then a single parent can focus a helluva lot more time being both nurturer and disciplinarian....but that's tough.

as long as there's love, the child will be alright...one parent or two.

I agree wholeheartedly - and in a perfect world we'd all know our relationships were solid as a rock before having kids and we would plan exactly when we were having them and everything would turn out exactly as planned. I guess I just feel that there should be some room for error without harsh judgment.

I'll tell you all this right now. As someone who came from a single parent household, it has sucked. But for one reason that I know Jennifer Garner doesn't have to worry about: Money.

Single parenthood is only hard because of money. When you're a millionare, that's much less of an issue.

I'm not so sure about that. The hardest part about single parenthood for me has always been The. Question(s):

"Why don't I have a daddy....like everyone else?"

"When are you going to get married....so I can have a daddy, like everyone else?"

"It sure would be cool to have a daddy so we can go do family things...like everyone else....."

So, I guess if money is the only thing that mattered....I guess I could always reply:

"Yeah, but I just bought you that cool talking, flying cell phone personal assistant thing-y....and I bet they don't have one of those....."

If a shortage of money was the only thing that sucked for you, then you're pretty lucky.

I'm not saying it's okay to just "hope everything works out" without doing as much as you can to ensure the success of that happening. I was under the impression that this thread was not about prevention, but what to do once you're already there and making decisions. That's where you need the room for error - the fact that you've already committed the "error" - and getting judged under those circumstances aren't going to make it any better for anyone.

I think I was/am pretty lucky in that regard, but I also don't think it's the worst thing in the world. Also, I think there are plenty of women out there - and men - capable of being excellent parents outside of a relationship.

Coming from poor parts of town, it has been much more acceptiable to be without a father. As fucked up as that is, it's true. Thats probably one reason I didn't feel as much heat.

I know lots of children that come from all kinds of relationships. Single parents, Gay parents, no parents, and you're good ole american nuclear family. Fuck if I know which group has the more fucked up kids, but I do know that all of the ones that look back on their parenting in a positive light had a lot of love.

It's not about her disagreeing. SW disagrees and I'm not arguing with her. It's about how she sat there and wanted to talk about all kinds of bullshit about "la raza" because it's the trendy thing for her. If it wasn't she would never have said what she did in this thread. I know people like her, they are the ones that come out when we have a meeting of the PSO but never come to do the actual hard work. They're not the ones that won't do shit when their favorit TV show is on or when they have a manicure appointment. It's bullshit.

I am not saying being a single parent is not ok. I think that too many times people think of kids as little toys or pets and not as people who will have questions and concerns and feelings.

I know two adult women. Both are single. One adopted a mentally handicapped little boy. A wonderful little family. The other woman had a daughter via a sperm bank. She never fails to mention how tough it is being a single parent when it comes to time and money. The first woman I have yet to hear complain. Is one more ok than the other?
