The Spurs are currently 7.5 games ahead of both the Mavericks and Grizzlies, and 9 games ahead of the Rockets, with 17 games left on the schedule.

Here are the Magic Numbers for the Spurs to win the Southwest Division and guarantee themselves a top-four seed.

Magic Numbers (any combination of Spurs wins or opponent losses)

Grizzlies - Spurs win series, own the tiebreaker - 10 games

Mavericks - series tied 2-2, tiebreaker TBD - 9 games

Rockets - series tied 2-2, Spurs own tiebreaker (guaranteed better division record) - 7 games

One interesting thing I noticed compiling these is that teams aren't playing the same number of Division games. The Spurs have 16 total Division games, compared to the Mavs who have 13, and the Rockets 14.

Do we raise a banner?

We'll just add on to our existing Division Champs banner.

Because, you know....it's the classy thing to do. :toast

I'd have to check the schedules again, but I thought every team played 16 division games this season.

I thought so too, but the Mavericks are currently 6-4 in Division games and have two games against the Griz, and one against the Rockets left. The Rockets are 4-6 in the Division, and play Memphis, Dallas, and New Orleans twice.

Dallas has 14 games left and are 9 games worse than the Spurs in the loss column. SA would have to fail epically to lose the lead in the division to them.

Memphis is 7 losses worse with 18 games left to play. Houston is 10 losses worse with 15 to play.

Only Memphis really has a legit chance to catch SA. The Spurs magic number to clinch a playoff spot is 6 over Denver.

As a Braves fan, I know epic collapses happen.
But then we are only talking about the division, not the 8th seed.
Hollinger has the Spurs at 99.8% with Memphis with the 0.2%.

At the beginning of the season on their NBA Season Preview, only 1 BSPN writer picked us to win the Southwest Division. The rest can all suck it

At the begining of the season I may not have picked the Spurs to win the SW either. Things have changed with the emergence of Leonard and some mid season moves.

I think the real reason we're about to win the Southwest is Pop's cute neighbor Sarah

It's a weird year, not everyone is playing everyone else equally as before. The division games won't add up to the same number this year.
