View Full Version : Horry decides 2 championships

Robert Horry shot the same shot twice in Spurs' playoff games to decide games.

In 03, he had the exact shot for LA in game 5 to beat the Spurs for his Lakers. The shot went halfway down and rimmed out, giving SA the 3-2 edge in their series.
In game 5 in Detroit, Horry shot the same 3 point shot and it went in, and gave his new team, the Spurs the 3-2 edge in the series.

Had the shots been reversed, and he made the one in 03, and missed the one on Sunday night, the Spurs would be only a 1 time NBA champion this Summer instead of a 3 time champion.

Think about that little twist of fate, it puts things in perspective. One inch either way on a 27 ft shot could have made a huge difference in the respectability of this SA franchise.

Just thank God that Horry's timing was impeccable.

Just another reason to love this guy.

I hate to admit this, but I had the exact same thought as Jim.

I'm not assuming a 3-time champion yet, though.

Perhaps not, but the odds look a lot better for SA now, then had he missed that shot, yes?

Absolutely. But I'm a worry-wart who tends to assume that the Spurs could get smoked by the Hawks in January.

Whenever someone wants to refer to a non descript game that is more than likely unimportant, it is always "the Hawks in January" :lol

Anyhoo, Jim is correct. If the Spurs manage a win tonight, 2/3rds of Spurs championships will have been decided by 2 seperate 3pt shots from one player. Odd.

possibly another one if Rodman guards him in '95.

possibly another one if Rodman guards anyone in '95.

Fixed that for ya mikey.

That is right Mikey. Horry won game 1 for Houston in 95 all by himself with all those uncontested 3 pointers. I always said that Horry was the real difference in that series, not Hakeem because he went nuts from the arc.

I guess when you have your finger on 6 championships not involving MJ the last 10 yrs, you have a say in exactly who gets the ring more often than not.

Horry is Hall of Fame bound, just for that reason, IMO.

I don't remember Horry drilling a lot of threes in game 1...I remember him making only one shot...unfortunately it was the game winner.

I remember vividly that Horry made 1 FG in Game 1 that year, a jumper from just above the free throw line, but it came with the Spurs up 1 and put the Spurs down 1 with little time left.

It also came right after Sean Elliott missed 2 free throws that would have iced the game.

A woman (a Mavs fan) keeps a good website (http://www.eskimo.com/~pbender/bball/tabs/1995/1995.html) full of NBA info, and has included her write-ups of the game flow from the 95 playoffs. Here's her entry on the last minute of Game 1 of the 1995 WCF (I've edited for easier reading):

92-92 1:13 remaining.

Rodman misses inside, ahead to (slight over pass) Drexler who
misses the layup.

Robinson 1 of 2. 93-92 SA, 45.9 seconds.

Rivers strips Olajuwon, Elliott is fouled on the break. Misses both. Timeout
Hou. 93-92 SA, 24.1 seconds.

Hou passes the ball around and Horry steps in for 17 foot jumper. Timeout SA. 94-93 HOU, 6.5 seconds.

Elliott misses.

Game over.

Ok, he made millions of them in other games then.

But the game winner was the one I remember.
