As we know over the years tons of sprinters have played on NFL rosters. Few were sprinters "trying" to play football like Ray Norton/Jimmy Hines, but most were two sport stars like a Jacoby Ford.

If we took the 4 fastest guys from an historical perspective to play for these teams.....(got a little creative with those who played on numerous teams)

lane

1.Giants...Richmond Flowers..Butch Woolfolk..Homer Jones..Henry Carr
2.Cowboys...Terrence Newman..Herschel Walker..Alexander Wright..Bob Hayes
3.Niners...Renaldo Nehemiah..James Owens..Deion Sanders...Ray Norton
4.Raiders...Sam Graddy..Alvis Whitted..Jacoby Ford..Ron Brown
5.Bears...Willie Gault..Cecil Turner..Virgil Livers...Curtis Conway
6.Packers...Mike Miller..Travis Williams..James Lofton...Phil Epps
7.Chiefs...Ken Thomas..Joe Delaney..Stone Johnson..Jamaal Charles
8.? who you got?

RaZon
04-04-2012, 05:29 AM
Why exactly would Deion run for the Niners and not the Falcons or Cowboys?

More importantly why am i replying?

I think that Niner team was better than this Falcon team.

Tim Dwight..Michael Haynes...Deion Sanders...Gerald Tinker.

The Cowboys didn't need him.

Nobody gives a shit if you reply or not.

There is a gang of NFLers who obviously had/have great speed but don't have any sprint credentials, no 40 times won't cut it.

In todays game...

Chris Johnson
Desaun Johnson
Mike Wallace
Julio Jones
Devin Hester

All can fly, but did little or nothing as tracksters.

Tim Dwight was a Big10 100 champ while at Iowa.
Michael Haynes was a 10.26 guy while at Northern Arizona.
Gerald Tinker was an Olympic 4x1 gold medalist out of Kent State.
Sanders ran a 10.26 while at FSU.

I have nothing for Julio Jones and I do keep up with that stuff.

What about Michael Vick?

Back in his early days he had some serious jets but not 100m jets. Right now he couldn't cook a 100m. Not that ever really could, his thing was 40-60.

There is a world of difference between the 40/60 and the 100m. The key words....speed endurance. World class sprinters don't start running until the 50 or so then it's max velocity for another 20 or so before it's sustain/maintain time. Or speed endurance, how much of their max can they hold.

What about Antwan Randle El?

As we know he was a QB while at Indiana, another one of those more quick than fast. He had good straight line speed but I doubt he could break a 10.40 100m. Fast for QB obviously. Well aware of his kick return skills, stil he was no true burner.

RaZon
04-04-2012, 11:33 PM
None of those mentioned above did anything as tracksters vs NCAA competition much less world class.

Sure they all had speed just not the kind of speed I'm talking about.

All those I mentioned in that relay were legit sprinters. All ran track.

Harper was a high jumper while at Tennessee. He was not a sprinter. Just another guy with "good" speed.

That's just it none of those guys did anything to be mentioned when talking sprinters in the NFL. Which is the topic.

All NFL receivers and backs are fast. I'm not talking about "fast" I'm talking about...elite speed. Something none of those you mentioned had.

How 'bout Donte Stallworth?

Wind at his back or not, det guys fast!

RaZon
04-04-2012, 11:43 PM
What about Randy Moss?

Good one!

While at Marshall he ran track only one season. He ran an indoor season. There he ran a 21.15 on a flat track. That is a quality time for any NCAAer. Which tells us if he'd been into track he's probably cooking 10.25ish. With that stride of his...sure! I wouldn't rule out a 10.1 something he had that kind of potential.

Another fast guy out of Tennessee. Just not 100m fast.

I can't talk enought about speed endurance. Footballers don't worry about anything over a 40, they don't run those 300's. Stallworth was not a sprinter at Tennesse and if he snuck by me it's because he did nothing.

Matt Jones was a star in football, basketball, and track. Could you give me your expert analysis on him?

Another speedy QB at the NCAA level. He just lacked quicks and agility. He was a star in track? Really?

He had good straight line speed but once again not 100m type speed.

As a receiver he didn't have that burst, those quick feet. He was more make a move then fly. Which worked out ok since most defenders aren't elite sprinters either. Darrel Green, Deion Sanders, Leonard Lyles and Terrence Newman the exceptions.

RaZon
04-04-2012, 11:58 PM
RaZon how do you think Usain Bolt would fare as an NFL wide receiver?

As he is he couldn't play NFL football. He'd be another Frank Budd, Ray Norton, Tommie Smith and Jimmy Hines. All Olympians who held WR's in the sprints that sucked at football.

Not saying he couldn't have gone to USC/Floria etc and learned to play the game and become that one trick pony.....the bomb. I doubt he could cut and move like a legit footballer. Have no idea about his hands. Other than he's not going to be another Chris Carter.

While in high school he ran a 10.40 and won his league 100m title. Obviously he was a lot smaller then. He also was a 47.5 400m guy and could long jump 24-8. That was before he got into weight training and just weight.

What about Marion Jones (on steroids).

How would she do in the NFL?

RaZon
04-05-2012, 12:27 AM
What about Mark Duper?

Duper was the real deal. A 9.4 guy while at NWLa. While there he ran on a great NCAA team with fellow NFLers Victor Oatis and Joe Delaney. I'm thinking they actually won the NCAA one year. I know for sure they medaled. Mark Duper was a solid sprinter at the college level.

That Dolphin 4x1 team...

John Roderick a 9.3 guy while at SMU
Paul Warfield a 9.6/26-2 guy while at Ohio St
Mark Duper 9.4
Jimmy Hines the only sub10.00 sprinter to ever play in the NFL. I don't really like to use him because he did next to nothing. But he did play.

RaZon
04-05-2012, 12:29 AM
What about Marion Jones (on steroids).

How would she do in the NFL?

Marion Jones would have been amazing in the NFL. She had that quick first step and could make you miss. Obviously she'd need a couple years of college ball since her background was in basketball. Actually a couple seasons in the WFL would work. Great talent!

Right about now those two are starting to figure it out. They are thinking....who is this guy..damn!!!!!!!!!...hahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm a track freak guys, track and football are my two pets. If he ran I know about him, if he played in the NFL I know about him. Hobby would work. I moderated the famous (in the track world) sub10 sprint talk forum, until the site went down.

I got what was going on but it did give me a chance to show off. Obviously I was bullshitting about Newton and Marion Jones.

Don't bother trying to come up with somebody else unless you want me to continue to showoff.

All those mentioned above this thread weren't sprinters of any note at the NCAA level. This thread is about elite speed not fast.

Trust me I'm well aware of how it must go on any internet site. That old....yeah sure:rolleyes...then you try everything (as you are doing right now) you can to..."see see you don't know it all".....hahaha!!!!!!!! Save it this time.....really.

I go back to the late 1800's with sprinting, 1920 in the NFL.

When we talk speed coming out of the U of Texas and football it starts with Olympic finalist. NYJet Johnny Jones.

Now add fellow receivers...

Tony Jones
Herkie Walls
Jamaal Charles...RB

Ramonce Taylor was no Reggie (10.4 in HS) Bush, he certainly was no Jamaal Charles who ws a sub 10.20 guy on that Longhorn track team. Doesn't he play in..hmm?...CFL? Arena?

Can't talk speed and the NFL and not mention Buddy Young (Illinois/Colts), Bobby Boyd (Loyola/Rams) and Ollie Matson (U of SF/Rams). All played prior to 1960. Young and Boyd were NCAA 100 champs. Matson an Olympic 400m man. Can't ignore Louisville's Lenny Lyles a 9.5 man (Colts) early 60's. Yes Jim Thorpe, Red "Galloping Ghost" Grange and Don Hutson could motor http://www.trackandfieldnews.com/discussion/images/smilies/icon_cool.gif

Then there's those who never made it to the NFL (if so short short stay) but had great speed as NCAA players.

Bennie Brazzell....LSU/Bengals
Terry McDaneils...Tenn/Raiders
Johnny Thomas..Baylor/Redskins
Russell Carter...SMU/Jets
Travis Hannah...USC/Oilers

4.Bob Hayes
5.Sam Graddy

You've never heard of a hefty relay? I thought you were some sort of historian.

John Henry Hamilton was a great HS runningback back in the day, a 5-10 250 pound powerhouse he also threw the shot.

It was a Tulare Union (the school that gave us Bob Mathias) vs Redwood dual meet. After the meet was over the coachs decided to run one of those weightman relays. Yes for three legs it was comical as those big guys tried to smoke it in vain. By the time John Henry got the stick he was way behind, then here he came, now the laughs stopped as this huge athlete began to roll. Looking like Bullet Bob Hayes at the 64 Olympics he was flying, the crowd was now on their feet with that...WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!....wit h 10 yards to go John Henry blew by Redwood....

After HS John Henry would play a couple years at COS the local JC. Then off to Northern Arizona where he broke all that schools rushing records. The Rams gave him a look, but he didn't have that agility they wanted. He was just a banger.

True story???
