Sept. 15 (Bloomberg) -- A group of 40 House Republican lawmakers asked CBS News to retract a story alleging that President George W. Bush received preferential treatment while serving in the Texas Air National Guard.

The lawmakers, in a letter to CBS News President Andrew Heyward, said documents cited in the report may be forgeries and that CBS had become ``part of a campaign to deceive the public and to defame'' Bush.

``We urge CBS to retract its story, and to disclose the identities of the people who have used your network to deceive your viewers in the final weeks of a presidential election,'' wrote the lawmakers, including House Republican Whip Roy Blunt of Missouri.

The secretary for the Texas Air National Guard colonel whose memos were cited by CBS told ``60 Minutes'' she didn't believe the memos were genuine but that their content was accurate. ``I know I didn't type them; however, the information in them is correct,'' Marion Carr Knox, 86, said in an interview aired tonight. ``Bush didn't think he had had to obey the rules that others did,'' she said.

As long as CBS continues to insist that the docs were not fakes then they will continue to lose credibility and the rest of their counterparts will have no problem in attacking them.

A congressional investigation would turn CBS from a target to a victim of the media. I don't think it will go through for that reason. But it could keep the story in the national media for a few more cycles at least this week.

Still, I think it is Rather important that we know who exactly tried to influence a presidential election with fake documents.

But, as they remain defiant in their obvious deception, they'll go back to 4th place in the ratings. Beyond that, however, they cast a pall over the entire broadcasting media:
