This madness with Gervinho as CF/ST has to stop. He just doesn't have the instincts or finishing abilities for that position. It's neither helping him nor the team to play him there. Actually, it's a bit like hoping Bonner will hit threes in the postseason - just not going to work.
Also, relying only on Cazorla to produce good attacking movements is a recipe for disaster. If opposing teams crowd him or double him consistently, there is no one to step up and provide a bit of creativity going forward right now. And there is no van Persie any longer to pull goals out of his hat. Podolski, Gervinho, and Giroud aren't really able to create their own goals, they need to be fed.
Being outplayed like that at home by Schalke is just depressing - Schalke are a good side, but they are hardly world-beaters. The Norwich game was basically the same against a lesser opponent, and even against West Ham, Arsenal looked poor for most of the game.
But the squad is just paper-thin deep at the moment. There is no second striker, the back-ups for the wing-backs are either mediocre or suspect, and the departure of Song has left a hole as far as a physically strong presence in defensive midfield is concerned - and we all know Diaby is probably out for the season again.

It's certainly not a lack of effort that is holding Gervinho back. He's obviously doing his best. Indeed, getting angry with him is like getting angry with a puppy who dutifully brings you your newspaper but then grins and urinates all over the rug while you're saying thank you. Ultimately, it's your fault for not training him better.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I still hold out hope that Gervinho can be a solid, long term Gunner. But it's absolutely true that he has several colossal, head scratching gaffes in every game.

Totally fair to question his mental lapses, but I agree with QC that he should be back on the wing where he belongs... Problem is, who the hell else is going to provide more consistency at CF? Right now, nobody, imo. That's why the next transfer window will prove to be crucial.

Find a fucking striker, Arsene! For fucks sake...

But yeah, the boat is sinking at the moment and I can't wait until December comes around and Arsenal is in the lower part of the middle of the table to see if they get desperate and spend some dough. There's too many good teams to fuck around this year. Not that many great teams but a lot of good teams.

http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/premier-league/gunners-link-to-25m-kit-deal-8228834.html

Arsenal’s healthy bank balance can expect another boost in two years with the club closing in on a new kit deal with Adidas worth as much as £25m a season.

The current deal with Nike – worth £13m a year – ends after next season. Arsenal’s shirts have been made by Nike since the mid-90s and more than 800,000 replica shirts are sold each year.

At an occasionally fractious AGM on Thursday supporters expressed disquiet at manager Arsène Wenger for putting finances above trophies but this deal would boost Arsenal’s revenue to £300m by 2014-15, putting the club among the world’s top-five earners.

Wow, holy shit, that's one of the best games I've ever seen! I'm kicking myself for bailing out 20 minutes in and it loses its luster knowing beforehand that Arsenal won, but watching the mayhem that ensued after the half is something to behold.

It's funny knowing that Arsenal was going to tie the game 4-4 before the extra period but just waiting for Walcott's tying goal knowing that time was going to run out was excruciating. I can only imagine how the supporters felt watching it live. Man what a crazy game!!

Walcott with a hattick and three assists (wtf, never seen that before), the greasy Morroccon with two goals, and Giroud with the beautiful header. Koscielny giveth, Koscielny taketh away has been his mantra this year apparently. Played like trash before the half and was great afterwards.

With Walcott, Giroud and Chamakh all playing long extended minutes against Reading (well Giroud to a lesser extent), I wonder who Wenger is going to have at striker against United. Well, the minutes they played probably don't matter for such a big game as this one because if you seriously can't get up for this game, then you need to sit your ass down but still, I wonder who's going to be upfront.

I somewhat agree with you. This first half was just beyond embarrassing. Even if it wasn't the first team, guys like Koscielny and Djourou (even though he is terrible) have too much experience to let anything like this happen. Hell, even Coquelin has enough first team experience to not lay an egg like that.
The second half showed that Arsenal too, at times, can actually display the right kind of effort and mentality. And that would have been true even if the score had stayed at 4-3.
In the end, it's too crazy a game to read much into it, but hopefully the whole team can at least take a positive mentality out of being able to turn around a game in that fashion.

I still think getting hammered at Old Trafford on the weekend is very possible. And by the way, the Chelsea-Utd game in the CC that is being played right now shows that both those sides are head and shoulders above Arsenal.

Oh, and I think Santi will have a bit more room to operate now that JW is back. Teams had really figured out the formula for shutting the Gunners down in midfield, basically by swarming Cazorla and forcing other guys to make plays (lol Ramsey). Hopefully, that won't be the case tomorrow

I don't get why so many football fans seem to think that playing in the middle as a striker is some kind of reward, and if you don't cut it, then you have to play on the wings. I mean I know that there have been players who began their careers on the wing and then later played as CF or striker, but that doesn't mean it should always be like this. Giroud is just not a winger, and if you field him and Walcott, then Giroud should play as a striker and Theo should play on the wing.
If you want Theo to play in the middle up front, fine, but then leave Giroud on the bench and let Arshavin play on the right wing or move Santi there and go with Arshavin or Wilshere as CAM (with Arteta and Coquelin as DM).

it's in the mid of the pitch where you get the best of him imho, though he can also play at the wing. the problem with arse is not that they don't have a good striker but that the strikers they have are not the exact types they really need. wenger always wants his striker to play an all-round game since the henry era and RvP used to get the job done for him as well, but he has no one left on his squad capable of doing so with RvP gone.

Anyway...some positives - Giroud looked fantastic and Cazorla was his usual self. Walcott also turned in a nice effort with a lot of excellent crosses and possession

could write a book about negatives... Back line, smh. Arteta was terrible, but that should be a rarity. from the 20min mark through the 70m mark they gave the ball away so many fucking times... Berbatov, Ruiz and co had acres of space to run around in. Ramsey was terrible and almost got sent off.

The defense hasn't looked the same since it was Mert/Vermaelen/Gibbs/Jenks to start the season. Hopefully we'll see that line again soon, although Mert hasn't been playing well at all, imo. His marking was awful today.

And of course the typical schizophrenic Gunners were on display. No consistency. Point at Wenger for that.

Reading that Wenger wanted to go 5-3-2 for the Schalke game but was denied by the coaching staff due to not having enough time to practice to implement the formation.

Can somebody explain to me what's the difference between a 3-5-2 and a 5-3-2? Seems like the same shit to me. Three center backs, 2 wings, 3 midfielders and two up front. I don't know, obviously I'm missing the difference, if there is any at least.

Anyway, lol desperation.

symple19
11-14-2012, 02:40 AM
A 5-3-2 is a more defensive minded formation that employs a sweeper and two center backs. The outside backs do a shitload of running while supporting the F/M's.

The 3 midfielders, besides being distributors are also expected to get back and defend. This formation is one of the most effective ways to, "park the bus".

Up front, you would no longer have the traditional striker and instead two guys who more or less play off of each other. Some teams play the two as a stack while some play them a bit staggered, but it's a fluid setup where they can easily switch roles if one plays a bit higher than the other.

I'm guessing it would look something like this:

(ideally,imo)

Jenks/Sagna Koscielny Mert Vermaelen Gibbs

Wilshere Cazorla Arteta

Giroud/Walcott Podolski

Maybe Arteta would be better in the middle but I always like the most creative guy in the center, and that's Santi, but his size can be a disadvantage against teams in the BPL, unlike La Liga

Also, in a formation like this you usually have one of the center backs who is capable of attacking and supporting the center mid, in this case probably Koscielny

Frankly, I like this formation a hell of a lot better than what they use at present, but it always takes time to get used to it and I don't know how smart it is in the middle of the season to try. It would also stifle some of the fluidity we Gooners are so used to.

symple19
11-14-2012, 02:46 AM
One of the things that has pissed me off about Wenger in the last few years is him molding the personnel to the formation instead of the opposite. It would seem that he's finally figured out that he has to run something that fits his current players.

Speaks volumes that it took him this long to figure it out

Unimaginable: Johan Cruyff on why Arsenal should NEVER get rid of Wenger 22 Dec 2012 22:30 (http://www.mirror.co.uk/by-date/22-12-2012) The Holland and Barcelona legend talks candidly to the Sunday Mirror about why Wenger must stay

http://i1.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article1467265.ece/ALTERNATES/s615/Arsenal+v+Swansea+City+-+Premier+League Richard Heathcote

One of the greatest players of all time – Holland legend Johan Cruyff – has revealed why Arsenal would be crazy to get rid of Arsene Wenger.
Cruyff has given the Gunners boss solid backing and says the Arsenal board would be mad to even consider parting company with the Frenchman.
“Wenger will ALWAYS bring the club back to the top,” said Cruyff, who is credited by Pep Guardiola for establishing the La Masia academy at Barcelona, which *produced Lionel Messi, Xavi *Hernandez and *Andres Iniesta.
“There is one *unwritten law at the highest level of football.
“And that is that all the big clubs, which have become the biggest and most established names in world *football, have been built on a strong philiosophy of long-term managers.
“They have *developed talented players at the club and bought players to fit the style of the existing players.”
Wenger has come under fire after his team’s indifferent start to the *season, which *included the shock Capital One Cup exit at lowly Bradford.
And they have made their worst start to a Premier League season, leading Gunners fans to turn on Wenger.
But Cruyff has particular praise for Wenger’s Arsenal side of the 90s. They are part of a rich history, which also included the *Manchester United side of the 1960s under Sir Matt Busby, the Ajax team of the 70s under Rinus Michels, AC Milan in the 80s and, currently, *Barcelona.
Sir Alex *Ferguson was also *mentioned – with Wenger – for the *success he has brought to Old Trafford over 25 years.
“I have so much respect for the football vision and philosophy at *Manchester United and *Arsenal,” said Cruyff. “Both clubs have had the same manager for 15 or 25 years. Alex Ferguson is not only the man who makes sure he *performs miracles and keeps *trophies flowing in.
“He – in my eyes – is also the *symbol of values Manchester United stands for. In the same breath, I speak about Arsene Wenger.
“People do not realise the *achievement of this manager at *Arsenal.
“I find it *incredible that *Arsenal have stayed at the *highest level of *European *competition and *England under his management without ever ending up in debt (http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/johan-cruyff-on-why-arsenal-should-never-1502106#).
“I cannot remember red figures at Arsenal over the last 15 years. How many clubs in Europe can say they have qualified for the Champions League for 16 *consecutive seasons under the same management? Arsene Wenger has put his life and soul into Arsenal.
“In 15 years, I have not seen him make any *irresponsible *purchases in the transfer *market.
“That is why the work of Arsene Wenger at *Arsenal is the prime example for every club in *Europe.
“I cannot even imagine the board or the fans would ever think for a moment of putting Arsene’s position in doubt.”

At least it's something I guess. I wonder what no-name, African or French players he's trying to get just to shut people up for new signings.

http://www.arsenal.com/news/news-archive/-we-are-working-very-hard-on-new-signings- (http://www.arsenal.com/news/news-archive/-we-are-working-very-hard-on-new-signings-)

‘We are working very hard on new signings’
Arsène Wenger insists he is still working “very hard” on adding two players to his squad during the January transfer window.

The Arsenal manager has been linked with a host of names this month, but has yet to make any significant moves in the market with just nine days remaining.

The Frenchman would not be drawn on the identities of potential targets, but admits he is still hopeful of bolstering his squad over the coming days.

“Yes [I still want two signings]. We work very hard on it,” Wenger said. “It is not the number that counts but the quality.

“I don't give you any names. I don’t come out on rumours because it would put [teams] in a bad position. The player as well.

“You have to respect the player has a contract somewhere, is playing and as long as the transfer is not done for anybody it is best not to talk about it because it doesn’t work. He has to continue to play where he is.”

Usmanov: Henry wants me in full control

Russian oligarch Alisher Usmanov has told L'Equipe that former Arsenal striker Thierry Henry is pushing for him to buy the Gunners outright.

Alisher Usmanov acquired former vice-chairman David Dein's shares in August 2007
GettyImagesAlisher Usmanov acquired former vice-chairman David Dein's shares in August 2007

Usmanov, 59, holds a 29.9% share in the Premier League side after buying up former vice-chairman David Dein's stake five years ago.

American businessman Stan Kroenke is the club's majority shareholder, but Usmanov, the world's 28th-richest man, admitted in an interview published on Monday that Henry is encouraging him to use his fortune to take total control - something he says he would have already done had his image not been undermined.

"I like many footballers, and I'm in contact with some of them. Perhaps my favourite of the last ten, 15 years is Thierry Henry. He's pushing me to buy all of Arsenal's shares, but I cannot predict the future," the Uzbek-born billionaire told the French sports daily.

"When I had the chance to buy some shares and become one of the main shareholders in the club, I didn't hesitate for a second. I was even ready to take total control. That wasn't possible because certain people preferred to make a profit and create, using me, an outside enemy. I remain portrayed as a pirate, an enemy. They have won that game."

The financial fair play regulations currently being enacted by UEFA may mean that even if Usmanov were to wrestle total control of the club away from Kroenke, his estimated wealth of some $18.1 billion could not be used to radically revamp Arsene Wenger's squad.

However, with Wenger regularly forced to remodel his team as his best players are sold off, Usmanov believes the Frenchman is being short-changed by the powers-that-be at the Emirates Stadium.

"For me, he's one of the best coaches in the world, but it's not easy for him," Usmanov said. "I think he deserves that players are brought in at Arsenal when they're needed.

"The best players, and not being satisfied with selling our best players to our rivals. If that happens, we can ask everything of him. But, today, he's sacrificed. Because of the policy, and we're all to blame. Everything's in Mr Kroenke's hands, and I hope he succeeds, even if he doesn't go along with my ideas."

He added: "The greatest achievement of Arsene Wenger is to have created two teams: the one that now plays for our rivals, and the one that is trying to be among the best in the Premier League.

"That's why I say it's not enough to merely flatter the coach, but to give him the possibility to buy the best players, superstars. But not just stars, but those chosen by Wenger.

"It's unthinkable that the shareholders get well-paid while, for small clauses in contracts, we lose key players, symbols like Robin van Persie, Mathieu Flamini or Patrick Vieira. We should have increased their salaries when they started to be courted, started to look elsewhere. I don't know why we didn't propose that to them."

With Usmanov on the outside looking in, as he has "no relationship" with Kroenke, he insisted his passion for the club was born at the end of the 1990s and remains intact.

"In my opinion, that team was as good as the current Barcelona side," Usmanov said. "It wasn't a question of money or prestige. It's a choice [to invest in the club] dictated by my emotions, those provoked in me by the club. And Arsenal's current situation remains an interesting investment.

"I would like to be useful for the club, and I can be. I understand football well, and can prove it, but I'll never force myself on anyone. For the moment, Arsenal don't seem to need me. But I remain convinced that Arsenal should have only one aim in every competition: first place and winning.

"All other theories are hypocrisy aimed at covering up weakness. I'm a strong man. If someone needs my help, my money, my know-how, anything I possess, I'm always ready."

With RMAO, he would be the coach, nothing more

Plus, Im not sure he wants to deal with the pressure of coaching Real

My choice as RMAO's next coach : Michael Laudrup - one can dream :D

I like Swansea's possession's style, and Laudrup played for both Midgetlona and RMAO, so he speaks Spanish and is familiar with both teams

Well, I think if Wenger doesn't win a trophy (very likely) and also finishes outside the top 4 (somewhat likely, imo) then his contract may not be renewed and he'll be available.

He would be a much better manager with the superior talent and resources that Real has than he is at Arsenal (again, imo).

True, the back four are a joke. I think Jenkinson is the only one who deserves to get any real minutes. Sagna has had some pathetic games and so has Gibbs. I remember cursing their names a couple of times this year. Mertesacker is too slow and can get burned often when his head is not in the game. He's overrated on set pieces as well, for being such a huge dude. Our fearless captain has had various shaky games and Koscielny has shit the bed a lot of times this year. Fuck that, we need to rehaul that line. Oh, I didn't even mention our super sub Andre Santos.

I know people say we need a striker and it's true though. I think I read somewhere that the majority of Arsenal's goals this year have been in the four or five games that they've blown out the oppositions.

6 against Southampton
5 against the Spuds
5 against Reading
7 against Newcastle
5 against West Ham
-----
28 goals out of the 46 (60%) in the season have been scored in five games. 18 goals have been scored in the other 18 games left over. It's like they blow their load in a couple of games and then struggle to score against others. Feast or famine it seems. So yes, please bring in a competent striker! This team needs some serious work personnel wise.

Jenks is going to be special, imo. Every game he's in it seems he jumps off the screen at you. While he still makes some dumb, young, mistakes, he's quite good at a lot of other things, especially attacking up the wing and supporting the wing/midfield.

I'm really happy with the young core that Wanger has assembled. What they need now is depth and/or a real difference maker, at whatever position that may be.

Btw, it's good to see Rosicky back. He's at least viable to come in and help when the "A" team is run out there... (Instead of, say, that fat Russian slob)

Don't forget the Champions League. Bayern are going to go bareback on Arsenal. Teams are obviously targeting his side of the field when they're attacking. We need a fucking miracle to draw at the most. They should just switch Sagna to the left and keep Jenkinson on the right. I really don't want to see Santos in that position or all three of Koscielny, Mertesacker and Vermaelen playing at the same time (with Vermaelen and Sagna holding the outer positions).

IIRC, Verminator has already played as a semi-LB in the past

So vs Bayern, they could go with this :

- LB: Verminator
- CB's : Maetesacker and Koscielny
- RB : Jenkinson

Martesacker is a bit slow, but Mario GOmez is not fast either.

And of course, Koscielny shoudnt try to deflect crosses
