Yeah, but if they continue with their "the 4th spot is our new PL championship" policy of the last couple of years, there will be empty seats soon - well, at least there should be.

I'm on record as liking Suarez, despite his character flaws and zombie tendencies. However, I agree with those who think he'll go a year or two and then pull the same shit as he has with Liverpool and Ajax. So long as the Gunners get a trophy during his tenure, IDGAF

That being said, I still think chances are slim he signs.

Finally: Suarez to be sold for £47.5 million (http://www.zimdiaspora.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=12431:finally-suarez-to-be-sold-for-p475-million&catid=80:sorts&Itemid=301)WEDNESDAY, 07 AUGUST 2013 21:06 EDITOR SPORTS (http://www.zimdiaspora.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=category&id=80:sorts&layout=blog&Itemid=301)

By Bernard Thompson
Gunners move step closer to finally landing their No 1 transfer target of the summer.
Arsenal are on the verge of sealing a club-record £47.5 million deal for wantaway Liverpool front man Luis Suarez following the Uruguayan’s most recent outburst about his future at Anfield.
http://www.zimdiaspora.com/images/newimg/Suarez-Plead.jpg

The 26-year-old gave an impassioned interview to both the Daily Telegraph and the Guardian on Wednesday morning detailing his exact reasons for wanting to quit the Merseyside giants this summer in order to move to a club competing in the Uefa Champions League next season.
So far, the Gunners have had two bids for the Uruguay international rejected by the Reds, although the second of those offers, valued at £40m plus £1, was still enough to trigger a release clause in the striker’s current contract at Liverpool so as to enable Suarez to enter into negotiations with Arsenal over a possible move to north London.
However, despite the Reds’ insistence so far that their star player will not be allowed to leave Merseyside for a sum of less than the £55m that saw Edinson Cavani join Paris Saint-Germain earlier this summer, Suarez’s latest public utterances on the matter have now finally persuaded the club to allow the forward to join Arsenal.
The Gunners and the Uruguay attacker’s agent, Pere Guardiola, the brother of Bayern Munich manager Pep Guardiola, have already met for face-to-face talks in a central London hotel over the weekend to thrash out Suarez’s personal terms on his move to the Emirates, with the two parties agreeing a five-year £150,000-per-week deal.
That contract will see the former Ajax hit man earn more than his current salary at Anfield, where Suarez picks up £120,000 per week after agreeing last August to sign an extension until June 30 2018 on his deal with the Merseysiders.
And now the two clubs are set to reach a compromise figure of £47.5m for the playmaker, who has registered 51 goals and 24 assists in just 96 matches for Liverpool since January 2011, after the Reds accepted that it was going against their own best interests to keep hold of a disgruntled player at the club next season.
But despite seeking a British-record transfer fee of £55m for their prize asset, Liverpool owner John W Henry and chairman Tom Werner are understood to still be happy to settle for a figure of £47.5m, which will see the Fenway Sports Group make an eye-catching profit of £24.7m on the player they bought from Ajax two-and-a-half years ago – Arsenal News.

Another good, young german. :toast

No question :tu

Still hope he ends up playing for the USMNT, though (He moved to the states at age 11)

Zelalem's story doesn't start in London or in Arsenal's academy, though. Born in Germany, Zelalem joined Hertha Berlin's youth academy as a youngster before moving to the United States at age 11. The destination was the greater Washington DC area, and the club he joined was Olney Rangers. Coached by Matt Pilkington, Zelalem and his teammates formed a tight knit core of players that have gone on to compete with some of the best teams in American youth soccer. Despite the presence of MLS club DC United in the area, the Olney Rangers continue to thrive in competitions around the country.
Read more at http://swol.co/gedion-zelalem-wiki/29362#p73yEv3PUTqKW7La.99

The youth club system in the DC area is one of, if not the best in the nation, so it's really not too much of a surprise that a player of his quality could come up through that organization. (of course, the German academy system is probably the best in the world, so he's had top-notch coaching throughout)

I'm definitely a fan and will support him wherever he plays internationally

Fucking retarded tbh..Suarez seems like he doesn't want to play in the EPL for too much longer, I guarantee he leaves the league within 2 years. Meanwhile Higuain is a good striker who wants to feel important/play consistent starter time at a club that values him. Is Arsenal for real? Shit is unbelievable that they make these decisions while being a top English club like they have no sense for reality.

Mertesacker, along with Kosc, was the best CB tandem in the EPL over the second half of the season last year. Yeah, he's slow, but his positioning/tackling is boss, as is his ability in the air.

Arsenal needs Verms back and another player to add depth, not replace what has turned into a top pair at CB

Agreed, but he's hurt right now. Can't return to form until he's healthy. Monreal is hurt, too, so really there is only one extra defender on the bench since Miquel got loaned out

If either Kosc or Mert get hurt, Sagna has to move over to CB and Jenks slides in to RB, leaving nothing on the bench. How Wenger can allow the reserves to get that thin is beyond me.

Hopefully the rumors about Gustavo are true, but I don't believe much of anything anymore (not that that helps the situation in defense)

Here's a link to my favorite Arsenal blogger, a Wenger supporter who also writes for ESPN FC. Read this and then read all the comments (arses) http://arseblog.com/2013/08/arsenal-1-3-aston-villa-disaster/

The man who is moneyless goes through the market fastest, and the 70m transfer fund is just a scam aimed at placating the enraged fans imho. Even if Wenger does have 70m fund available to spend in the market, it still wouldn't make any difference when the max salary allowed by the board is what? 3m a year or something? How could they lure top-class players to join them when the players could earn twice that figure playing for City or PSG?

Not a sham, they have well over 100m in cash on hand. As for wages, it has nothing to do with the board, and more to do with Wenger's philosophy. Arsenal is about as close to a dictatorship as it gets (among the ranks of BPL managers). Basically, Gazidis and the board have no teeth, and Arsene calls all the shots

18 year old lolgerian CB Ramy Bensebaini training with the 1st team :cry (far left, behind Giroud)

I dont think they are going to keep him, because I dont think he is ready yet, but it's still cool :cry

He is coming from Paradou Academy, based in Algiers; the guy who runs it is Guillou, who is friend of Wenger.

He is a trialist, by the way, so he is not officially signed for the youth team.

He can also play DM, and was close to signing with Porto last year

If he's versatile, why not at least give him a shot on the U21 squad? Wenger may be a cheap asshat, but he can definitely scout talent. Doubt he would bring him in if he was completely worthless.

Actually, that sounds like a good job for Arsene. Head scout (and not manager)

Yeah

But maybe he brought him over to London to do his buddy (Guillou ) a favor

Bensebaini has played 2 friendlies with the Arsenal U21 team this summer; he didnt look so good in both of those games, but they played against 2 Senior (shitty, but Senior) clubs.
Also, the other CB, a player from FC Barcelona, was shit as well in those games.

So I dont know, Wenger must see something him for having in him and other 4 youngsters train with the Sr team twice

on transfer plans…
I am not against spending money, but I want to add super quality to our squad. Tottenham got a lot of money for Bale, they have to invest it - I understand that. The need is different for us, we need one or two super players and we will try to add that. We have 24 more hours, so maybe we can surprise you. Maybe not - but I am confident.
on other deals delaying his transfer plans…
Yes, because it is a little bit like a domino game. Maybe something will happen in the last 24 hours, maybe not. It is very difficult to predict.
on paying a premium…
I am ready to pay what we can afford, even if it is a bit over the market [value] and as long as it is not crazy. I am not against spending.

Btw, i'm pleased with the Ozil signing, but it doesn't change the fact that Arsene fucked up bad during the early months of the window. He could have acted earlier to bring in a striker and CB, then waited around for the inevitable sale of Bale to move on a player from RM. Thee was a better way to do all this, tbh.

Arsenal doesnt need Dive Maria

Actually, signing DiMaria would've made more sense than spending this kind of money for Özil. But well, it is what it is. I just hope that a lot of people here aren't going to be disappointed with Özil.

He has the most assists in all of Europe over the last 3 years (according to ESPN)

34 - Millions in pounds sterling Arsenal have spent so far in this season (remember there’s still January to do this all over again!)
24 - Age of Mesut Özil (until October)
5 - Number of trophies Mesut Özil has in his career (UEFA U-21 European Cup, DFB-Pokal, La Liga, Copa del Rey, Supercopa de España)
1.83 - Özil height in meters
76 - Özil weight in kilos
42.5 - Millions of pounds Arsenal spent to land Özil
559,210 - Pounds per kilo of Özil
550,000 - Pounds per kilo of A colorless diamonds
Priceless - The feeling of goodwill the club has generated among most fans
49 - Starts for club and country 2009/2010
11 - Goals
20 - Assists
60 - Starts for club and country 2010/2011
12 - Goals
31 - Assists
54 - Starts for club and country 2011/2012
13 - Goals
26 - Assists
59 - Starts for club and country in 2012/2013
16 - Goals
35 - Assists (are you getting a sense that there might be a pattern?*)
222 - Total starts in the last 4 years (55.5 per season)
52 - Goals (13 per season)
112 - Assists (28 per season)
72 - League assists for Özil in the last 5 seasons, more than any other player in the top five leagues in Europe (https://twitter.com/Orbinho/status/374554795358433280) (@orbinho)
353 - Chances created from open play in that time, also tops all players in Europe (@orbinho)
92 - Key passes in la Liga last season (2nd in la Liga)
13 – Assists in la Liga last season (2nd in la Liga)
84 - Average passing in la Liga % last season
1.3 - Crosses per game in la Liga last season
0.5 - Through balls per game in La Liga last season
33 - Dribbles successful last season (47% rate)
If we take out the international games and the cup matches and just focus on Liga and Champions League play we can compare Özil to other top creative midfielders thus:

I think he has/is surpassing Xavi right now, because Xavi is on the decline. Still amazes me as a player but i have Özil above him. Iniesta, i don't know. He's made off glass, that's what hurt him to be an even better player than he is but i buy that he's still better than Özil.

Did just see lefty's post about the numbers between them but ok... Özil is just 24 and will get better, can't wait. :toast

Couple things the Ozil signing does for Arsenal, beyond his play, of course

1. Shows the best players in the world they are willing to spend money, and are serious about winning trophy's
2. Strikers should pay special attention, as they would have one of the best midfields on earth to service them
3. Finally put some actual fear into opposing teams
4. Helps to heal the fanbase
5. Sets them up nicely for the January window, especially if they stay consistent/in form
6. Will bring even more fans into the fold from Germany/Turkey, as well as the marketing dollars that would surely follow
7. Brings a swagger back to Arsenal that's been missing since Cesc left (if not longer)

Losing Van P was huge. Giroud the go to striker, weak. Ozil with Van P would have been sublime.

I think the EPL is wide open. When Tottenham gets things together they will challenge. Man U & Man City are vulnerable. If Liverpool stays the course and Suarez returns... PL should be exciting this year.

So Wenger was just playing around when he went after the striker with teeth?

Not at all, but you need two viable strikers when playing a brutal schedule. Would Suarez/Higuain be better than Giroud? Maybe. Are they both also different strikers than Giroud? Yes. Giroud is a big physical type, good in the air and poaching around goal. Suarez/Higuain, especially the former, are good at creating for themselves and making things happen with the ball at their feet. What I'm saying is that different defense's require different matchups. If you can tailor your attack to what is being thrown against you, you'll have an advantage. A big guy/smaller guy combo with different skill sets would allow Arsene to do just that.

I fully expect Wenger to find a striker in the mid-season window, btw. It's also worth noting that AFC approached Villa about Benteke late last night before the window closed. Maybe he'll try again in January?

In the meantime, it looks like TGSTEL and Sanogo will fill in for games against weaker competition, and Walcott can do a decent job if Giroud goes down (a nightmare scenario, to be sure)

symple19
09-03-2013, 09:36 PM
Last thing I'll say about Giroud is that his work rate this year is much higher than last, especially in terms of helping out the defense. He was crucial against totts both in the air and harrying their midfielders in the Gunner half of the field. Big improvement on that front, one that really doesn't show up much in the stats.

lefty
09-03-2013, 09:53 PM
I know I've been making fun of Giroud, but last year was his 1st season in the EPL and he was adjusting

His other adjustment was that his former team Montpellier and Arsenal play a totally different style of football; Arsenal is more uptempo with a lot of movement off the ball

Giroud is also an excellent passer
