Well, the problem is, that this feeling of expecting great things has been around this club for quite some years now, but they never delivered.

Ramsey, Djourou and Diaby can join Arshavin in Russia

Nah, Ramsey is a very talented player that just needs a bit more time to develop (let's not forget that he was out for a season). As for Djourou and Diaby: Yeah, get their asses out. With Diaby, it's a bit like with Bonner: Pop always hoped that Bonner would turn into the next Horry, just like Wenger always hoped that Diaby will be the next Vieira. Neither is going to happen ...

I'm a relatively new comer when it comes to supporting Arsenal so I have all the hope in the world right now kind of like in a "ignorance is bliss" kind of way. I'm sure you guys who have supported the club over the years know better though. :lol

As for Ramsey, he's obviously not in top form yet he continues to be used because that's the only way he'll regain it after coming back from that horrific injury. I don't blame him but for a club of Arsenal's standard where winning is the only way, I just don't like him being in the games in order for him to regain that form even though it can be detrimental to the team. TBH though, there's not much that can be done with all the injuries that have occurred this year in the d-line and in the midfield so Ramsey is going to continue to play unfortunately. I'm sure if Arteta and Wilshere were healthy, we wouldn't see that much of Ramsey. I just wish Arsenal had better choices right now but we're stuck with what we have with the season almost coming to an end.

Gotta hold to that three spot, hope everyone comes back healthy and maybe get some things happen during the transfer window to compete next year for that top spot and the CL. Yeah I have newcomer hope :lol

With the way the season started this year and ending it with a top 3 spot (as things are going right now), I like to believe Arsenal maybe has an outside chance next year to compete for that top spot.

Wenger puts transfer plans on hold (http://www.talksport.co.uk/sports-news/football/premier-league/transfer-rumours/120507/wenger-puts-transfer-plans-hold-171506)

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has warned the club's supporters to be patient before he resumes his summer spending spree.

Wenger has already snapped up Germany striker Lukas Podolski and is looking to further strengthen his side. But he told fans at the weekend that he is still weighing up his options.

The Frenchman said: "We wanted to get at least one of our transfer targets sorted out early and we are pleased to have achieved it [with Podolksi].

"The next phase of our 'signings' will be to take care of our injured players and make sure they are back for the start of next season.

"I am thinking of players like Jack Wilshere, Abou Diaby and Per Mertesacker - when these guys are fit we have quite a big squad and before we can buy again we have to assess how many players we have."

I wouldn't worry about Diaby, he's obviously just filler in case everybody goes down like they have this year. I'd expect Arsene to roll with Walcott and Rosicky on the wings with Song and Arteta in the middle. That's a pretty damn good midfield, combined with RVP + Podolski upfront all that needs strengthening is the defense IMO.

Hot for Spurs! Vertonghen reveals he wants to join Tottenham and calls on Ajax to agree a deal (http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/jan-vertonghen-reveals-he-wants-to-join-823592)

Jan Vertonghen has revealed he wants to seal a move to Tottenham this summer, and has called on his club Ajax to agree a fee with Harry Redknapp's side.

The Belgium international has been linked with a number of Premier League sides including Arsenal and Manchester United.

But the 25-year-old, who has just one year left on his contract, has now told Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf that he favours a switch to White Hart Lane.

"Tottenham are absolutely my favourite," he said. "[But] the Ajax board are asking for a very big amount for a player whose contract is running out in year.

"I trust that both Tottenham and Ajax will put some water in the wine and they will soon reach an agreement.

"I owe much to Ajax, but I've always given my whole heart and soul to the club," he added.

"My appreciation for the club and the fans is great. It would be terrible if my farewell is marred or distorted because Ajax [are stubborn] with the asking price.

"Of course I want Ajax to gain financially, but the amount that Tottenham want to pay, I think - perhaps with a little extra – is very reasonable.

"Next year I can leave for free. I hope that this awareness is there, because a transfer lingering for weeks like Maarten Stekelenburg's [to Roma] seems very harsh.

"He joined at the end of Roma's preparation [for the new season]. I want to be able to blend in with the other players at Spurs from the start [of pre-season training]."

The centre-back appeared to rule out the possibility of him joining potential suitors Arsenal or Manchester United.

"Tottenham is a fantastic football club that has the tradition I want," he said.

"Ajax was the perfect club for me, but Spurs is already very close nearby. They buy young, eager, offensive-minded players."

Yossi Benayoun plots perfect goodbye as Arsenal eye Yann M'Vila (http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2012/may/08/yossi-benayoun-arsenal-yann-mvila)

Yossi Benayoun was plotting the perfect goodbye to Arsenal on Tuesday as speculation mounted they were about to welcome the France international Yann M'Vila.

Benayoun has revealed he wants to end his loan move from Chelsea by helping Arsenal to finish third in the Premier League, with automatic Champions League qualification set to provide a boost for their summer recruitment drive.

Reports on Tuesday suggested that they were on the brink of completing what would be a club‑record £17.7m signing of the Rennes midfielder M'Vila, who has long been linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal appear to be succeeding in conducting their summer transfer business early this year, having been accused of panic signings at the end of the August window after selling Cesc Fábregas and Samir Nasri.

Benayoun was one of the new arrivals but has proven a useful addition to the squad in recent months as they have fought back from a horrendous start to the season to move to the brink of qualifying for the Champions League once more.

The final game of Benayoun's loan spell comes at West Bromwich Albion on Sunday, where Arsenal need to win to be certain of finishing third. That could also help to deny Benayoun's parent club, Chelsea, a top-four spot but the 32-year-old Israel captain could not care less.

"Since I came to Arsenal, I have always been committed to one club until the last game of the season," he said. "The only thing I want is for Arsenal to finish in third place – I don't care about anybody else.

"When I finish I will have to decide about my future. I am supposed to go back to Chelsea first and then we will see what the future holds.

"I finish here in a good way. In the last few months, I have been more involved. I think I have played a big part in the last few games. You always remember the end and I am happy with my performances in the last few months."

Arsène Wenger must now decide whether to try to make Benayoun's move permanent but his attention is said to be currently focused on fending off reported interest from Internazionale for his No1 target M'Vila. Should he succeed, M'Vila would be his second summer signing following the arrival of Lukas Podolski.

It would also be another statement of Arsenal's ambitions ahead of contract negotiations with Robin van Persie, who will sit down with them this summer to discuss extending his deal which expires a year later. Theo Walcott also has only a year left on his contract and he and Van Persie may wait to see who the club bring in before deciding whether to commit their long-term futures.

M'Vila's arrival would provide much-needed strength in central midfield, where Arsenal have suffered crippling injuries this season. He is also more defensive-minded than many of his prospective team-mates and would help to protect a back four that has been left horribly exposed at times.

Reports suggest he would cost £17.7m to prise from Rennes, who have lost their last two Ligue 1 games to end any hope they had of qualifying for next season's Champions League. Arsenal's current transfer record is the £15m they spent on Andrey Arshavin in 2009.

Throw in a defensive coach while we're at it. This team has had glaring defensive issues for years now, and they haven't been solved by having a solid CB pairing in Koscielny and Vermaelen either.

Manchester City 'offer Robin van Persie £250k-a-week to leave Arsenal' (http://www.metro.co.uk/sport/football/898330-manchester-city-offer-robin-van-persie-250k-a-week-to-leave-arsenal)

The Dutch international has only a year left on his contract at the Emirates Stadium, leading to speculation over where his future may lie.

City are already blessed with talented options in their forward line, with boss Roberto Mancini able to call upon the services of Sergio Aguero, Edin Dzeko, Carlos Tevez and Mario Balotelli.

But the Italian may feel his table toppers would be strengthened with 37-goal forward Van Persie to call upon next season.

According to the Daily Star, they are prepared to pay him a quarter of a million pounds each week - which equates to £12 million a year - in order to make the switch to the Etihad Stadium.

Arsenal are sure not to let him go without a fight, despite having signed Germany international Lukas Podolski to add to their own group of strikers.

Talks are expected between the Gunners and Van Persie over a new contract at the end of the season, but these could be impacted by the declaration of a huge City offer.

Family Ties: Mrs RVP with the news that every Arsenal fan wants to hear (http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/robin-van-persies-wife-bouchra-830189)

Robin van Persie's wife, Bouchra, insists the family are happy with life in London - suggesting the Arsenal captain will stay at the Emirates

Robin van Persie will be staying at Arsenal – if his wife and mother get their way.

It’s the news every Gunner fan wants to hear and there will be in-depth contract talks between the club and their 28-year-old star striker this summer.

But as far as Robin’s wife Bouchra is concerned, their family comes first.

She said: “We have been in London for eight years now. As a family, we love it here.

“Robin is captain of Arsenal and, as many people claim, the leader of the Arsenal team.

“Arsenal believed in Robin when he was young and when he was considered as a bit of a rebel.

“We don’t want to upset things at home either. Our kids, Shaqueel and Dina, go to school here in London. And they are just as happy as we are.

“We still expect to sit down after this season is over and have a look at the future.

“We have to make some decisions at some point. But it is not just about Robin. He also thinks about us, his children and me.

“I also love it that everyone at Arsenal respects him. At the training ground, at the stadium, his teammates, the fans.

“Everyone comes up to me all the time to tell me how happy they are with him.

“I also see that Robin is really kind to everyone at Arsenal in return. As a skipper should be!

“A good captain should be concerned about the club, about the team, about everything involving Arsenal. Oh, and in the meantime, I have been promoted to ‘skip’s wife’.”

Even Van Persie’s mother, Jose, has joined the clamour for him to stay.

She said: “Arsenal is a beautiful club. They have no debts and Robin is being worshipped there.

“I honestly feel that the fans and the people at the club really love him. That is worth so much, too.

“When we go to Arsenal and we walk into the stadium with him, it is electrifying.

“As a mum, that fills me with pride. It is really fantastic. When Robin’s granddad, my dad, was over at the Emirates for his (91st) birthday and we were taking pictures inside, I heard grown-up people behind me say: ‘We love Robin’. As a mum, I could not wish for a nicer thing.”

Van Persie, speaking to lifestyle Magazine ‘Heroes’ in Holland, admits his mum is right.

“I have got to know everyone at the club. The kit man, the laundryman, everyone really. I know everyone by name. I love all that.’’

Wife Bouchra added: “When it was his grandad’s birthday, Robin took the entire family to the dressing room.

“His grandad went to sit in Robin’s seat in the dressing room and walked through every room of the home team. He loved it.’’

Van Persie added: “My grandad also wanted to walk on the pitch. But as we all know, the grass is almost sacrosanct and nobody can walk on it after a game. Not even your family.

“But when our groundsman saw grandad standing on the touchline, he said, ‘Robin, YOUR grandad can step onto the pitch’. Well, you see, that’s Arsenal.”

Van Persie says he will let his family choose after his career is over if they want to live in England or head home to Holland.

He ended: “While I am playing, I realise that it will be mainly me who decides where we live.

“If my kids want to go back to Holland, we will do. But that won’t be for another 10 years, I think.

“My kids speak better English than Dutch at this moment. They attend a real English school, not an international school.’’
Come on Bouchra, convince Robin more. We're all behind you! :cry

Wenger rejects M'Vila move (http://www.football365.co.za/story/0,22162,14287_7770867,00.html)

Arsene Wenger has rejected reports France midfielder Yann M'Vila could follow Lukas Podolski to Arsenal in a big-money move from Rennes.

The Gunners bagged Podolski from FC Köln for £10 million but Wenger has moved to quash rumours surrounding the signing of the highly-rated middle-man.

"It is not true," the Gunners boss told Sky Sports. "There is not any interest at the moment.

"We have not been in touch with anybody, we have not made any offer to anybody and we are nowhere near to buying anybody else at the moment."

Meanwhile, Podolski has expressed his admiration for Arsenal, saying he is relishing meeting his new team-mates.

The 26-year-old will move to Emirates Stadium after Germany's Euro 2012 campaign later in July and the striker is excited to start playing 'the Arsenal way'.

"Arsenal are a very disciplined team; they play great football with excellent passing and they are really good to watch on television," he told Arsenal Player.

"I'm excited to be part of this team now, playing that way and making the supporters happy.

"Robin van Persie has had such a brilliant season - it has been great to watch. Then there is Per Mertesacker who I know well, and I have also been impressed with the performances of Wojciech Szczesny in goal.

"Of course Tomas Rosicky has had a very good season. But there are many great players at Arsenal and I'm looking forward to meeting all of my new team-mates."

Podolski added: "I used to enjoy watching Henry, Pires and Jens Lehmann of course. Bergkamp as well.

"There are quite a few great players from Arsenal's history - we know them all, don't we?! And I'm proud to become an Arsenal player myself."
So there goes M'Vila. I wonder who Arsene has in mind now. Probably another scrub?

Committed: I'm not looking to leave Arsenal, insists Johan Djourou (http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/johan-djourou-insists-hes-not-881210)

Johan Djourou maintains he is not seeking a transfer from Arsenal.

The 25-year-old centre-back has been linked with an £8million switch to Napoli after dropping down the pecking order at Emirates Stadium.

However, Swiss international Djourou moved to play down the reports.

He said on Twitter: "I just want to deny what has been in the press about my transfer. It isn't true at all.

"I have been at Arsenal for 10 years now and I am always committed."

Meanwhile Olivier Giroud is desperate to join Arsenal - and is ready to complete a £12million move to the Emirates.

Rene Girard, coach of the France striker's current club Montpellier, says the Gunners have come in for the 25-year-old.

Girard told French radio: "Arsenal are very interested and Giroud wants to play in England.

"If Arsene [Wenger] agrees with the president [Louis Nicollin], he will sign for them."

As revealed in the Mirror, Arsenal are keen to use misfit striker Marouane Chamakh as part of a player-plus-cash deal .

Gunners boss Wenger, who is covering Euro 2012 for French TV, will see Giroud at close quarters in the coming days.

Arfa mo!: Arsenal ready to fight Chelsea for Toon winger (http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/transfer-news-arsenal-eye-hatem-904414)

Arsenal have emerged as rivals to Chelsea's interest in Hatem Ben Arfa.

The 25-year-old Newcastle winger has been on the Champions League winners' radar for some time after an impressive campaign last season.

But Arsenal, whose summer reshuffle has seen them buy Cologne striker Lukas Podolski and line up Montpellier striker Olivier Giroud, are now contenders, too.

Ben Arfa is believed to have welcomed the interest, as he fears he would not play regularly if he were to trade Tyneside for Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea have already clinched the signings of midfielders Eden Hazard of Lille and Marko Marin of Werder Bremen for next season, to join the likes of Juan Mata and Frank Lampard.

Ben Arfa, who is currently on Euro 2012 duty with France in Polkraine, joined Newcastle on loan from Marseille in August 2010.

The move becoming permanent soon after, even though he was out with a badly broken leg.

He returned to first-team action last September after almost a full year on the sidelines.

Ben Arfa made 32 appearances for the Magpies as they played their way to an unlikely Europa League spot when many observers had tipped them for relegation.

As his match fitness improved, he became more of threat, scoring all six of his goals for the season between Boxing Day and the end of the campaign - including a Goal-of-the-Season contender dribble from his own half against Bolton.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2162286/Robin-van-Persie-expected-travel-pre-season-tour-Asia-Arsenal-hold-firm-new-deal.html

Robin van Persie is now expected travel to Arsenal’s pre-season tour of Asia as the club stand firm in their attempts to keep the striker.

The Gunners skipper’s involvement in the summer trip to Malaysia, China and Hong Kong was unclear due to Holland’s involvement in Euro 2012.

But their shock early exit from the competition means Van Persie will now join the rest of his team-mates on tour.

No new Arsenal deal - Robin van Persie (http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/18712651)

Arsenal striker Robin van Persie has announced that he will not be signing a new deal at the club.

The 28-year-old, who has a year left on his current contract, confirmed that he had met with manager Arsene Wenger and chief executive Ivan Gazidis.

But he revealed that they disagree on the way the club should move forward.

"I've thought long and hard about it, but I have decided not to extend my contract," the Dutchman wrote on his personal website.

Hardly surprising. RvP has been around long enough to realize that Arsenal is bound for "mediocrity at the top" (if that makes any sense) for years to come (and already has been for years) and that they don't seem too busy about changing anything about it.
I guess as a 28-year old, you might want to start winning some trophies, and they don't do that at Arsenal these days.

Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson has warned Robin van Persie he will regret his decision to leave the Gunners.

Skipper Van Persie this afternoon revealed on his official website he would not extend his contract, which runs out at the end of the 2012-13 season.
The 28-year-old cited his desire to win trophies as a key reason for his decision, with Arsenal yet to win any silverware since 2005.
Despite that Merson believes Van Persie, who scored 37 goals in all competitions for the Gunners last term, will live to regret leaving Emirates Stadium and warned that he would be "slaughtered" by Gunners fans if he is unable to secure a move before the new campaign.
"Not many players leave Arsenal, very rarely, and don't regret it. It's an unbelievable club," Merson told Sky Sports News.
"It's perfect. I'd have liked him to stick it out.
"I'm a bit gutted really. He's burnt his bridges. If he comes back and they don't sell him the fans are going to slaughter him.
"They'll be devastated. He's a top-drawer player. World class."
Big-spending Manchester City loom as the most likely suitor for Van Persie as they look to further strengthen after their breakthrough Barclays Premier League success last term.
Former Gunners striker Alan Smith does not believe, however, that the Dutchman was swayed to turn his back on the club by the riches the likes of City can offer.
"From what I have heard from people close to Robin he's not motivated by money," he said.
"I think at his age, he's 28, it's about winning medals. He's in his peak years now. I truly believe in this case he wants to win things in the next few years when he can.
"That doesn't reflect well, of course, on Arsenal. It's really disappointing from Arsenal's point of view.
"But Robin van Persie is looking at the next few years when he's 28, 29, 30; he thinks they can't win trophies. You don't want to say it but you probably have to agree with him."
Smith fears Van Persie's departure is set to widen the gap between the Gunners and those clubs at the top of the Premier League.
While Wenger has already brought in Lukas Podolski and Oliver Giroud to boost his forward options, Smith is unconvinced they can match Van Persie's influence.
"He's got a lot of hard thinking to do now, Arsene Wenger," he said.
"He's brought in Giroud and Podolski but can they replace the 37 goals he got last season? They are going to have to for Arsenal just to stand still let alone move forward.
"It's a double blow for Arsenal because they've also lost a captain, and a good captain too.
"It's going to be very difficult to make up the points they trailed Manchester City last season.
"I'm not saying, though, that they've got no chance at all."
Former midfielder Ray Parlour believes Van Persie had made up his mind to leave the club before the end of last season.
"I think he knew three or four months ago that he wasn't going to stay," he said.
"That's football these days. People move on quickly. Arsenal have to accept it and move on."
With Van Persie set to fetch top dollar Parlour has urged Arsenal to immediately reinvest the money in the squad.
The Gunners hierarchy were criticised for failing to spend following the departures of Cesc Fabregas - also skipper when he left for Barcelona - and fellow midfielder Samir Nasri.
Parlour is hopeful that situation will not occur again, adding: "There is talk he could get £25million to £30million. If that is the case it has to be invested straight back into the club.
"When Fabregas and Nasri left the money wasn't invested back in. They need to spend the amount they get and maybe more as well.
"Maybe they can get two or more players with this money."

Van Persie refuses to enter talks over a new deal: "I still have almost two years left, so for the moment that's fine. I'm happy with my contract. I can't look into the future. I can't see us talking now because we are so busy." May 04, 2012 Wenger hopeful that Van Persie will sign a new deal: "Who would want to lose his best player? My desire and my wish is to find an agreement with Robin van Persie, extend the contract and stay with us for a longer time. Hopefully we can reach that." July 4, 2012 Reveals on his personal website that he will not sign a new deal with Arsenal as his hopes for the club are not matched by Wenger. "As announced earlier this year I had a meeting with the Boss and Mr. Gazidis after the season.

"This was a meeting about the club's future strategy and their policy. Financial terms or a contract have not been discussed, since that is not my priority at all.

"I personally have had a great season but my goal has been to win trophies with the team and to bring the club back to its glory days.

"Out of my huge respect for Mr. Wenger, the players and the fans I don't want to go into any details, but unfortunately in this meeting it has again become clear to me that we in many aspects disagree on the way Arsenal FC should move forward.

"I've thought long and hard about it, but I have decided not to extend my contract.

"You guys, the fans, have of course the right to disagree with my view and decision and I will always respect your opinions.

"I love the club and the fans, no matter what happens. I have grown up and became a man during my time with Arsenal FC.

"Everybody at the club and the fans have always supported me over the years and I have always given my all (and more) on and off the pitch.

"I am very proud of being part of this fantastic club for the last 8 years. As soon as Mr. Gazidis is back from his 2-week holiday in America further meetings will follow and I will update you if and when there are more developments."

Arsenal are threatening to head into meltdown after Alisher Usmanov launched an attack on the club.

After being hit by Robin van Persie's refusal to sign a new contract, the Gunners hierarchy have now been questioned in an open letter from Red & White Holdings - which is fronted by Russian billionaire Usmanov.

It turns up the heat on owner Stan Kroenke as the club battles to stay among the Barclays Premier League's elite.

Arsenal's second-biggest shareholders have written to Kroenke expressing 'deep reservations' about how the American is running the club.

Usmanov and Farhad Moshiri claim that a 'tight' financial regime is leading to manager Arsene Wenger selling his best players and 'having to continue to find cheaper replacements.'

They complain that 'we are faced with losing our true marquee player' because we cannot 'give confidence that we can win trophies,' asking 'where are the safeguards to ensure that this doesn't happen again and again?'

The pair own just under 30 per cent of Arsenal through investment company Red & White but haven't been allowed on the board by Kroenke.

Arsene Wenger bets an ice cream that Robin van Persie will stay at Arsenal (http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/transfers/arsene-wenger-bets-an-ice-cream-that-robin-van-persie-will-stay-at-arsenal-7866569.html)

Arsène Wenger has insisted there is no chance of Robin van Persie going to Juventus – and told an Italian journalist he would even buy him an ice cream if any deal went through.

The Arsenal captain has been targeted throughout Euro 2012 by the Italian champions, who dispatched Pavel Nedved to talk to the 28-year-old. They have also opened tentative negotiations with the Liverpool striker Luis Suarez and Borussia Dortmund's Robert Lewandowski.

However, Wenger, who is working as a commentator for French television, said a move to Turin would have little attraction for Van Persie.

"He will stay at Arsenal," Wenger told the Italian newspaper La Repubblica. "There is no reason why a top player, a big champion would want a move to Serie A – in terms of the prestige of the league, the level of play or financial considerations.

"If he moves there, I will buy you a caramello," Wenger concluded.

With one year remaining on his contract, Van Persie's future at club level remains in limbo. His father has said he will not consider another English club. However, talks with Arsenal's chief executive, Ivan Gazidis, reached no immediate conclusion and there have been no public declarations of interest by either Real Madrid or Barcelona.

I could see Real or Barca putting in a bid for RvP soon. I think Higuain would be a great player for Arsenal to buy, because he'd be cheaper than RvP and Higuain is frustrated by not getting regular playing time at Real Madrid. Higuain is a solid finisher too, he normally doesn't waste too many chances, and he's scored 2nd most goals (22) in La Liga for Madrid even though he was not a regular starter, as Benzema normally started.

Just comparing the two:
Benzema: 26 starts, 21 goals
Higuain: 18 starts, 22 goals

There was only a 1-game difference between total games. Higuain also had significantly less shots. IMO his numbers are pretty impressive, but of course it's Real Madrid vs. La Liga.

If Podolski is going to play as a winger, then Arsenal will need another traditional center forward, and I could see Higuain wanting to move there as he would be the best CF at the club getting regular starting time. Makes sense for both clubs now that RvP wants to leave and he realistically won't be going to another EPL club.

Walcott, 23, is in the same position as Van Persie - with a contract expiring next year - and is thought to be considering his options as the likes of Chelsea, Juventus and PSG have shown interest in the winger.

Surprisingly though, ESPN learned that Harry Redknapp has made discreet enquiries about Walcott's contractual position prior to being sacked at Tottenham, with new manager Andre Villas-Boas also considering a move.

A source told ESPN that Chelsea may not be in the running. "I cannot see Walcott being a prime target for Chelsea, although the final decision will rest with Roman Abramovich," he said. "They have already signed wingers, and are looking for another striker to fill in for the departing Didier Drogba."

The England international has had a mixed few years at the Emirates as he has been the subject of jeering from the Gunners' fans for some below-par performances. However, he has also shown his obvious potential, with the 5-2 win over Tottenham last season (where he was almost hauled off at half-time, before scoring two goals late on) indicative of his overall form.

"You can't play well all season and I was struggling, I don't know why," Walcott said in an interview with the Evening Standard after that game.

"Maybe I took my eye off the game. I am always going to be judged on stats and it has definitely picked up since Spurs."

The recent high-profile arrivals of Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud and also the rise of young Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain have led to speculation over whether Arsenal might choose to cash in on Walcott this summer, rather than lose him on a free next year.

Fiorentina forward Stevan Jovetic and Borussia Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski are being talked about as possible replacements for Van Persie while Japan winger Ryo Miyaichi could be ready to step up if Walcott also decides to jump ship.

Bids made for Van Persie - reports

Robin van Persie is set to be absent from Arsenal's pre-season tour of Asia amid reports that the Gunners have received offers for the wantaway striker.

Van Persie, 28, revealed this month that he does not intend to sign a new contract with Arsenal, with his current deal due to expire in the summer of 2013.

The Netherlands international said his ambitions were not matched by the Gunners, and interest in signing him has subsequently increased.

The BBC suggested on Friday that Manchester United, Manchester City and Juventus have made offers in the region of £15 million for Van Persie, although Arsenal want a fee nearer £30 million. The Guardian, meanwhile, claims United have failed with their first bid.

Arsene Wenger and his players are due to travel to Asia for a tour that begins against a Malaysia XI next Tuesday. Van Persie, though, will not be among those making the trip, according to reports.

Wenger has so far signed forwards Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud after his side finished third in the Premier League last season, with Van Persie scoring 30 of their goals.

Wenger rejects M'Vila talk, backs Diaby (http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/news/wenger-rejects-mvila-talk-backs-diaby-104356551.html)

Rennes anchorman M'Vila, 22, has been a long-term transfer link for the Gunners, with reports stepping up due to the chronic injury problems suffered by Diaby and Jack Wilshere.

But, speaking from Arsenal’s pre-season tour of the Far East, Wenger insisted that Diaby – who is fit and ready to play against a Malaysia XI – will be key to the club’s fortunes.

“No [I am not interested],” Wenger said in reference to M'Vila. “We wait on Diaby and Wilshere.

“When you look we have [Alex] Song, [Aaron] Ramsey, [Francis] Coquelin, Wilshere, Mikel Arteta and Diaby.

“In defensive midfielders and box-to-box players we are not short if they are all coming back. If we have setbacks in pre-season it could be different.”

Diaby, it seems, is key to Wenger’s thoughts. He plays in the same position as M'Vila and the French coach is convinced the 26-year-old is the best man for the job – despite a dreadful injury record that has seen him play 21 Premier League matches in the past two years.

“He is the first player who would be on the France team-sheet in midfield when he is fit. Laurent Blanc said that before the European Championship and he waited a very long time to know if he could play or not. But he couldn't,” Wenger added.

“You can't imagine how happy I am firstly to have him in the squad, because he is an exceptional player. I am cautious but confident because he had two hard weeks and came through it well.”

Cazorla linked with Arsenal move

Arsenal could be set to sign Spain winger Santi Cazorla from financially-troubled Malaga, with a fee of around €20 million thought likely to be enough to bring him to the Emirates.

http://soccernet-assets.espn.go.com/design05/images/2011/0804/santicazorlamalaga2011_275x155.jpg

Cazorla, 27, was a target for Arsenal last summer, but Malaga's worsening financial situation makes a move increasingly likely despite the Spanish club's attempts to discourage suitors by stressing the €45 million buy-out clause in his contract.

The winger is reported to have told Malaga that he wishes to leave and informed Arsenal that he would like to move to North London.

Talks between the clubs are reported to have taken place against a backdrop of increasing financial pressure on Malaga, who have been reported to Spain's Footballers' Association (AFE) by four players, including Cazorla, for non-payment of wages.

Under rules introduced in April, the club has until July 25 to respond to the claims and until the end of the month to reach an agreement with the players in question. Failure to do so could see them relegated and thrown out of the Champions League.

Cazorla joined Malaga from Villarreal in a €19 million deal last summer but, after a season hit by financial issues including the non-payment of wages and bonuses, he has voiced a desire to leave. Villarreal claim they are still owed money on his transfer fee.

Malaga may need to sell him because - unless the club's Qatari owners provide a cash injection - the transfer fee brought in would represent the quickest way of settling the debts. While the debts are outstanding, the club is allowed to sell but not sign players.

Cazorla, Joris Mathijsen, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Salomon Rondon all threatened to make a formal complaint against Malaga during talks with the AFE earlier this month. The association said all four were still owed an "important" amount of money.

Last week, Cazorla was linked with a move to Tottenham, with reports suggesting that White Hart Lane coach Andre Villas-Boas saw him as a replacement for Luka Modric if the playmaker eventually moves to Real Madrid in what has become one of the summer's more drawn-out sagas.
Spurs are believed to have been monitoring the uncertain situation at Malaga, and could yet table a £15 million offer for the player, who scored nine league goals last season.

Cazorla due to fly in (http://www1.skysports.com/football/news/11670/7954704)

Spanish international Santi Cazorla is due to fly into London this week for a medical with Arsenal, Sky Sports understands.

The Malaga midfielder wants to quit the troubled club - whose Qatarian owners are looking to sell.

Despite a takeover looking likely, Cazorla is pressing for his sale to go through and he looks set to get his wish.

A deal worth around €22million (£17.3million) looks set to be agreed between the two clubs.

The player's representatives have already held talks with Arsenal and they are happy with the proposed deal on offer at the Emirates.

Malaga paid €19million to Villarreal just 12 months ago, but they have huge unpaid debts of around €40million which need settling this week.

Talks with Albanian oil company Taci have broken down and, whilst there is Russian and Middle East interest, the deal to sell Cazorla looks like it is needed to help sort out their current mess.

Sky Sports understands that Cazorla should be in England within the next 48 hours to conclude a deal, which would be a major coup for Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger.

The 27-year-old, a regular in Spain's all-conquering international squad, helped Malaga into the top four in La Liga last season.
