RIP, Dwayne Schintzius. He endured months of complications after receiving a second bone marrow transplant, his younger brother Travis said.

If there was ever a person where you could spit on their grave and not have it be outright disrespectful, it would be Dwayne Schintzius.

"Ivan take CHAAAAARRRRGE!!!!!!!!!"

Just watched the movie "Eddie" last week, and saw him in it and remembered what a disappointment this guy was for the Spurs. Still sad to see him die at such a young age.

RIP Dwanye

RIP.

Sad to see him go so young, but he was an ass. I remember meeting him when I was younger, ~13? years old, and told me to "go fuck myself" while he was waiting to be seated at a restaurant.

Then I ran into him in Boston when he played for the celtics. Again, unprovoked, he cursed at me when he got kicked out of the main celtics work out room and came into the university workout room.

In his rookie season he showed some flashes. I remember when he started a string of games and actually looked pretty good next to Robinson. He was big, coordinated and reasonably athletic for someone his bulk.

That was the first version of the Spurs twin towers? It's amazing how much Pop hates big frontcourts now. I remember he used to start a frontcourt of TD, DR, WP. Now he won't even consider TD and TS.

I remember taking my dad to Hemisfare for the draft party the year we drafted him.

We were watching him fall down the line and everyone was thinking he was about to fall to the Pistons. I was personally hoping Elden Campbell would fall to us. When both fell to us I was screaming for Campbell but knew Larry Brown and Bob Bass couldn't resist a big man that projected into the lottery.

Then Larry Brown got up to the mike and said "If were going to screw up, might as well screw up big"

Then they announced Dwayne Schintzius

I was convinced that Elden Campbell was the better choice, but I spent the last year a Clemson University and even played a pick up game against him and Dale Davis.

Bless his soul, he sucked as a Spur

I thought, as many (he was projected as high as a n° 2 absolute draft choice in many mocks just before the draft day, and however like the best prospect at center available that year) that Dwayne had the skills for becoming a wonderful nba player...If I rememeber correctly, he also played some games with the national team (under 18 I think).
A front line of him and Robinson could have been dominant in years.
Never understood why a so gifted player is gonna have a so bad career...but his behavior problems were so clear and known that made him fall to the n° 24 draft choice....where, however, he was too good of a gamble to not be taken.
I still think that Spurs and Brown, at that time, made the right choice (at least we have to remember he was traded for Antoine Carr, that player very well for us).
I'm just sorry, for him and for us, that he didn't turn his life into the one of a potentially very good and winning nba player.
Again, rest in peace.

RIP Dwayne, I thought when you were drafted you would be the missing piece to get the Spurs over the hump. The "twin tower" dream didn't work out but I will always appreciate your Billy Ray Cyrus-esque mullet.

When I was a kid I used to have a shirt with Dwayne on it. He had a cape and was posed like Superman. That's all I really remember. I have been looking for it forever now. Does anyone have a picture of it or at least remember it. Would love to see it again. Thnx.

Tribute to the big fella, courtesy of wikipedia...

During his junior (College) season, he got out of a car outside a Gainessville nightclub wielding a tennis racket and hit a Florida student.[5] Schintzius later apologized and was not formally charged with a crime, but the university's office of student affairs found Schintzius guilty of violating the student code of conduct and suspended him for the first four games of the season.

In the first game after he returned from that suspension, Florida traveled to Nashville, Tennessee to face the Vanderbilt Commodores in a crucial SEC matchup.[6] With two seconds left and down by two points, Florida turned the ball over, seemingly sealing a loss.[6] At that point, someone in the Memorial Gymnasium home crowd threw a tennis ball onto the court resulting in a technical foul on the Commodores.[6] Schintzius, who led the Gators in free throw percentage that season, hit both free throws to send the game into overtime.[6] Florida won the game 81–78 in overtime, and eventually captured their first SEC regular season championship by a single game over Vanderbilt.

And in unrelated news.

He later revealed Spurs general manager Bob Bass disliked his mullet haircut and told him to shave it, which he did.[11] Schintzius then sent Bass the shavings in an envelope.

This was actually the second time in DS's playing career he was told to get a haircut. lol.

DeVoe told Schintzius that in order to rejoin the basketball team, he would have to maintain his playing weight, go to class consistently, and get a haircut

Someone needs to make an E! Hollywood True Story out of this guy. It's got to be done.

The thing about Schintzius is that he hated basketball, he did it for the money and it beat getting a real job. Not to mention all the hot pussy it got him.

The dude was a total rocker and lived at the titty bars.

In 92-93 he got paid $140K for playing 5 games. Total of 35 minutes, 7 points, and 8 boards. That's a great gig, if you can get it.
