Cincinnati Bengals free agent wide receiver Jerome Simpson will be suspended for three games under the league's substance abuse policy, an NFL source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.
Simpson has visited the Minnesota Vikings and St. Louis Rams, and still is expected to sign with a team for this season.
Simpson was sentenced earlier this month to 15 days in jail and three years' probation after pleading guilty to a felony drug charge in Kentucky. He was originally indicted on a felony charge of marijuana trafficking after about two pounds of marijuana was shipped to his home last fall, but the plea agreement changed the charge to a prohibited act relating to controlled substances.
A judge in Covington, Ky., reduced the jail time from the 60 days recommended by prosecutors in their plea agreement with Simpson, now an unrestricted free agent after four seasons with the Bengals.
Simpson was also ordered to perform 200 hours of community service, undergo drug testing and pay a $7,500 fine plus court costs.
