View Full Version : Can the Jazz beat the Spurs in Round 1?

rayjayjohnson

No, but it could go seven imo.

Of the bottom 3 or 4 teams in the west playoffs, Jazz will give the Spurs the biggest headache.

Jazz have:
Great front line.
Awesome whiteboy 2 guard
Devin Harris looking less like a dinosaur than usual
Great home crowd

If I were spurfan, I would have much preferred the Mavs or the Nuggs tbh.

Probably a 5 game series. I could see Utah winning one at home.

This series goes no further then 5 games. Can go to a sixth game provided a miracle run by the Jazz,

That's an unfair take.

Memphis played one on the whole NBA. No one thought they were going to go anywhere so they were regarded as first round fodders. Spurs went into that series thinking they had already won it. By the time Spurs thought of them as serious contenders they were already out of contention themselves.

Thunder also got taken by surprise.

This year is totally different. Team is well prepare now and what's more important, all healthy.

Fair. You are better this year, now that TP is no longer itching from those crabs he got from his whore wife.

I think you got it, but Jazz ain't no easy beats this year. That front court is staaaaacked.

Due respect to the (imo deluded) love for Splitter you've all got, but Big Al/Milsap/Kanter are gonna school his ass.

tbh, shipping out RJ was probably the biggest upgrade. That bitch ended up the Memphis series on the bench.

Doesn't Harris have a decent playoff history against Parker? I like their front line but they don't have enough guns to win the series. I'll be shocked if it goes 6.

Yeah Harris usually makes TP his bitch for whatever reason but it hasn't been the case this year.

With last year PO Tim it would be a tough serie but if Tim keeps on playing like he is 30 y/o this serie shouldn't be an issue.

Unlike most of the spurs fans, I keep in mind last year ass kicking. Nevertheless 2012 spurs are very different, they don't rely so much on the 3 pts shooting, Tim is rejuvenated, Diaw is better than Blair, Tiago will be used this time from game 1, Jax is bringing toughness, RJ soft ass is not here anymore and Manu doesn't have a broke hand. So I'd say Spurs in 5 but like KG would say anything is possible.

Now Utah is a physical team that could do some damage on our TOSB bodies.

Venti Quattro
04-26-2012, 09:28 AM
I don't even know how good Harris is now. I think TP is going to destroy him. Not entirely sure though.

Leetonidas
04-26-2012, 09:41 AM
Utah's frontcourt is getting more massively overrated by the day. If they try that Millsap/Favors/Jefferson shit the Spurs will kill them on offense. They don't have any imposing defenders (Allen, Battier) or two skilled bigs playing anywhere near the level that Randolph and Gasol were playing at. Their big rotation is good, but their young players (Favors, Kanter) need time to develop. Going into the postseason it seems clear Pop will bench Blair for matchups and him becoming the 5th big has made me much more confident with our frontline. Diaw has been a very underrated pickup

Spurs sweep imo

I don't think this is that bad of a matchup for them. Al Jefferson will get his, but Millsap is only 6'8 so I don't see him having the kind of impact Marc Gasol had last year.

04-26-2012, 01:58 PM
Anything is possible, but the Jazz are the clear underdog. When one has a big frontline like the Jazz going against the perimeter-oriented offense of the Spurs, you generally want to slow the game down and dictate the pace from wire to wire so your big men can grind them into submission and hopefully get in their heads with big defensive plays.

Unfortunately for the Jazz, it has played out like anything but a slow it down, grind it out game for them vs the Spurs this season: the Spurs averaged 110 pts when at least Tony Parker and Tim Duncan were playing. Not only that, they're having a lot of trouble keeping those perimeter attackers out of the paint: Parker averages 10 FTAs, Manu got 15 FTAs in his single game, and overall with 2 or more of the Big 3 playing Spurs average over 13 more FTAs per contest versus the Jazz than their season average.

The Jazz have their work cut out for them, big front line or no, because their perimeter players are going to have trouble keeping players out of the paint and those big frontliners can't help but foul. And if the Spurs dictate the pace . . . let's just say it might get ugly for the Jazz.

People are underrating the Jazz. They are a relatively physical team and teams like this usually play better in the playoffs than in the regular season.

The Spurs offense is based on spacing and ball movement. In the playoffs, those things are harder to come by because of:
1) Better prep by the opposing team
2) Increased physicality allowed
3) Increased intensity of opposing team.

Don't get me wrong, I still think the Spurs will win, but these will be hard-fought, physical games with the series probably going 6 games.

Red Hawk #21
04-26-2012, 02:32 PM
There are some really interesting matchups in this series. The Devin Harris-Tony Parker matchup, Harris used to do well in that matchup back in Dallas but I feel TP will be ready for him this time. The Manu Ginobili-Gordon Hayward matchup, if you've seen Hayward play you can see just how similar he is to Manu. It seems like he modeled his game after Manu. And Jefferson vs Duncan should be a battle of post moves down low. I expect the Spurs to win but the Jazz will challenge them. And if the Jazz get confident things might become a lot tougher for the Spurs.

Seventyniner
04-26-2012, 03:01 PM
This is a bigger mismatch than 2007 tbh. Still, the Jazz crowd will be good for 1 win like in 07.

I'd honestly like to hear this reasoning. What makes LAL's frontline less formidable to the Spurs than the Jazz? Defensively, I thought the Jazz frontline played weak and I dont expect Bynum to play weak at all.
