Origin of the team name?

Why did the team choose "Spurs"? It's that thing people put in their boots to ride horses right? Who came up with this and why?

"Team officials wanted a name that reflected the Western heritage of Texas, so a contest was held and the name Spurs was chosen."

Spurs were in Dallas before moving to San Antonio and used to be called the Chaparrals.
